• In your journal, record at least 7 physical properties of that person.

• Read your list of physical properties to your partner or to the class and see if they can guess who you picked based off of those properties.

What is Matter?Anything that has mass and takes up

space.

All matter is composed of discrete, tiny particles called atoms.

Physical States of Matter

All matter exists in one of three physical states:

Solid

Liquid

Gas

Solid Matter

Definite shape and definite volume

Particles cohere rigidly to one another

Shape can be independent of the container.

Liquid Matter

Definite volume, but not a definite shape

Takes the shape of the container

Particles are close in contact, but move freely

Gaseous Matter

Indefinite volume and no fixed shape

Particles move independently of each other

Physical Properties of Matter

Any characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing the substance into something else.

Physical Properties

Color – the color that an object is in its natural form

Mass- the amount of matter that something is made up of

Luster - the amount of light reflected by an object

State Of Matter - the physical forms in which a substance can exist; states include solid, liquid, gas

Brittle – easily broken or shattered

Ductility – able to be pulled into wires

Malleability – the ability to be rolled or pounded into thin sheets, like aluminum foil

Conductivity – the ability to transfer thermal energy (heat) or electricity

Magnetism – the property of attracting certain metals or producing a magnetic field as shown by a magnet

Density- the amount of matter in a given space or volume. (g/ml) or (g/cm3)
