Vegetables Growing your own vegetables is
easy and fun. Kids are often more willing to eat veges if they’ve grown
them themselves. Just a few recyclable containers will help to get you started. Cut the top off a plastic milk bottle and it becomes a pot.
Recyclable containers that make great plant pots are:
Tin cans, milk bottles, buckets, yogurt pottles
Make some drainage holes in the bottom, place some small stones over the holes, fill with rich
soil ready to plant!
Malo e lelei It has been great to see so much Tongan language being taught in the classrooms this week. It has been of concern however that many of our Tongan students seem to have lost some of their own language. If you have a first language other than English please make sure it is the main language spoken at
home. (Tongan Language Week this week) Production Remember the production is next week. Tuesday. We expect all children to be at the night performance. Please drop them at the Opera House Community door before 5:30 p.m. Tickets $2.00 from the office if you want to watch. There will be a special note coming home tomorrow. The home and school will be selling raffles at the door so please support them, bring your change. Union Meeting Thank you for your support today so our teachers and support staff could attend their union meeting. We were discussing what action to take on the Government’s refusal to increase education funding and to introduce a new funding system that would no longer guarantee staffing levels for schools. If you get the chance please let our local MP Jacqui Dean know that the current proposals are not good enough and that the Government needs to listen to advice from the Education professionals (teachers) not treasury. None of the proposals from the Government reflect the advice given by the NZEI or PPTA on the review committee. Mid year report survey My thanks to the 19 people who responded to the survey. (10 paper based 9 electronically) About 8% of our families responded. Most people were happy with the report but there was also some good feedback for some changes to be made. Your insights are appreciated. Parenting tips 5 http://yourot.com/parenting-club/2016/5/16/why-our-children-are-so-bored-at-school-cant-wait-and-get-so-easily-frustrated 5. Limited social interaction We are all busy, so we give our kids digital gadgets and make them “busy” too. Kids used to play outside, where in unstructured natural environments, they learned and practiced their social skills. Unfortunately, technology replaced the outdoor time. Also, technology made the parents less available to socially interact with their kids. Obviously, our kids fall behind…the babysitting gadget is not equipped for social skill development. Most successful people are the ones who have great social skills. This is the priority! The brain is just like a muscle that is trainable and re-trainable. If you want your child to be able to bike, you teach him biking skills. If you want your child to be able to wait, you need to teach him patience. If you want your child to be able to socialize, you need to teach him social skills. The same applies to all the other skills. There is no difference!! You can make a difference though in your child’s life by training your child’s brain so that your child will successfully function on social, emotional, and academic levels. Here is how: 5. Teach social skills Teach them turn taking, sharing, losing/winning, compromising, complimenting others, using “please and thank you” This is the last of the tips from this article. I hope you found then interesting. Have a great weekend. Go the All Blacks Regards Brent and Staff
