3 Myths about the T-Score

A pupil’s PSLE Aggregate Score is the combined total of his normalized scores (T-Scores) for all the subjects he has taken

The normalized score (T-Score) for any

subject is a score obtained through a statistical calculation that takes into account the performance of all the other PSLE students in the same subject in the same year

4 Myths about the T-Score

Subject T-Score

English 71

Maths 70

Science 72

Mother Tongue 69

PSLE Aggregate Score 282

Example:

It is important that your child does well in all subjects, and

not focus only on some subjects

Myth No. 1

Heavier weightages are given to

EL and MT

(All subjects are given equal weightages)

Myth No. 2

If the Science Paper is perceived as very difficult, my child will be disadvantaged

(Your child’s T-Score for Science is calculated in relation to the performance

of all other pupils. Therefore, it is important that your child answers to the best of his ability during the examination)

Myths No. 3

The PSLE T-score is ¾ of the total marks for all the 4 subjects

(The PSLE Aggregate Score is the combined total of the T-Scores for all the subjects that he takes)

DSA-Sec Implementation

INTRODUCTION DSA-Sec Exercise first introduced in 2004

The DSA-Sec Exercise was conceptualised to promote holistic education

DSA Exercise is not a centralized posting exercise

Participating Sec Schools have the autonomy to decide who to admit via DSA Exercise

MOE HQ is performing the role as a Clearing House agent for this exercise

DSA-SEC Exercise 2012

Science, Sports, Aesthetics etc)

Students’ achievements in

academics & non-academic areas

Application Stage

Obtain information on DSA-Sec Schools about niche areas, selection criteria, application and selection processes (trials, tests, interviews etc)

Through :

Checking the schools’ websites

Calling the schools

Visiting the schools

DSA-SEC Exercise 2012

Application Stage

Student identifies the secondary

school(s) he

wants to apply

Student checks with secondary

school(s) how

to apply

Student submit application

DSA-SEC Exercise 2012

Application Stage

Go online to check participating schools

and DSA information.

Students are to consider their own

strengths and which secondary school

best meets their needs.

There is no limit to the number of DSA

schools that the child can apply to.

workings

Calculator introduced in

PSLE 2009

Aim

Achieve better balance between emphasis on computational & problem solving skills

Aim

Widen repertoire of problem solving in pupils • allow pupils to

solve real-life Mathematics problems

focus on discovering patterns & making generalisations when performing computations for investigative tasks

Concern When using calculator in problem

solving, pupils have tendency to skip steps in their presentation of workings

Help manage concern about presentation of workings

Pupil expected to show thought process through working steps

Parent to support school in training pupils to present workings clearly

Important that pupils provide correct units for final answers

3. Tips to help child learn Mathematics

• Support them by encouraging them to

complete work assigned

revise their work regularly

talk about Mathematics as used in day-to-day activities

Examples

What is meant by ‘up to 70% discount’?

What is the speed limit of expressways?

What is the percentage increase of a specific brand of sweet meat over the next few days?

4. Preparation of Mathematics tools for use in examination

Revision

Get your child to start the revision

70% of PSLE papers are testing on P4 AND P5 topics

30% of PSLE papers are testing on P3 and P6 topics

The revision should start the heavier weightage

• P4 and P5 topics

Revision

The revision should emphasize on your child’s weaknesses

Look back on your child’s P4 and P5 Science files and activity book.

What are the mistakes made?

Focus on the particular topics that your child made the most number of mistakes

Activity books

Why do we need your child to focus on it?

All the process skills to be tested are shown there

It is crucial for pupils to understand how to conduct an investigative experiment

Questions using a variety of process skills will be crafted based on the experiments.

This year, Science department is producing our own Mee Toh Activity booklets based on the recommendations from CPDD.

• Lesson packages from groups of Science teachers from various schools

Supplementary lessons

Supplementary class lessons are used to expose pupils to different types of process skills questions.

It is useful for pupils to revise through the supplementary package to prepare them for PSLE.

Tips on Examinations

Some questions will start off with an investigative experiment that reveals the topic that the next part of the question is related.

Pupils ought to infer from the experiment and apply in the next part of the application question

Tips on Examinations

Pupils ought to take note of the requirements of x-axis and y-axis when they are drawing graphs. Interpretation of the graphs and table are equally important. Not all types of graphs starts from point 0.

Number of

cells

Time (hrs)

How do I teach my child how to interpret graphs at home?

You may refer to the PSLE Revision Guide that is found in the book list.

The last chapter of the book contains detailed information on the interpretation of the graphs.

Tips on examinations

Refer to the last part of each unit of the coursebook

The key words are often consolidated for your child’s reference

Ask yourself if you do spot some of them in your child’s answers

If it is not present, get your child to rephrase them

Marking is based on the key concepts and key words.

No marks will be awarded if the answers contain wrong concept.

Pupils must explain their choice in Science questions. Pupils will not be given any marks even with the correct choice or “Yes” or “No” answer, without any further elaboration
