• Micro-organisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease.

• These pathogens include but are not limited to Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Transmission• Blood Borne Pathogens are transmitted

through contact with infectious body fluids. • Body fluids include: blood, urine, feces, and

vomit.

Universal Precautions:Barriers for Infection Control

Universal or Standard Precautions

An approach to infection control where human blood and certain body fluids are treated as if infectious for HIV, HBV, HCV and other blood borne pathogens.

Hand Washing

• If hand washing is not possible, the use of hand sanitizers is acceptable on a temporary basis.

• The CDC recommends alcohol-based hand sanitizers as the most effective agents for reducing the amount of bacteria on the hands.
