has the right to:
An Employee
6
Employers with more than 25 employees must establish a joint labor-management safety committee
• A Facility Hazard Communication designee should be named
Overview• Blood Borne Pathogens & Universal
Precautions• Other Infectious Disease• Chemical Hazards• Environmental Hazards• Ergonomics• Reporting
BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS AND UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS
Important resource See: www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual
9
• Micro-organisms that are present in human blood and can cause disease.
• These pathogens include but are not limited to Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Transmission• Blood Borne Pathogens are transmitted
through contact with infectious body fluids. • Body fluids include: blood, urine, feces, and
vomit.
Blood Borne Pathogens
Universal Precautions:Barriers for Infection Control
Universal or Standard Precautions
An approach to infection control where human blood and certain body fluids are treated as if infectious for HIV, HBV, HCV and other blood borne pathogens.

Barriers and Infection Control
Personal Protective EquipmentGlovesCleaning the areaDiscarding contaminated itemsOther barriers (mask, clothing, glasses)

OTHER INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Important resource See: www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual

Should be reviewed by the employee
Adult Immunizations
• Hepatitis B• Varicella (Chicken pox)• Tetanus, Pertussis (Tdap)• Influenza (Flu) - annually

InhalationIngestionContact with or
through skinAbsorption or
penetration
Routes of Entry
15
The single most important measure to reduce the risk of transmitting organisms!
Hand Washing
• If hand washing is not possible, the use of hand sanitizers is acceptable on a temporary basis.
• The CDC recommends alcohol-based hand sanitizers as the most effective agents for reducing the amount of bacteria on the hands.

Cleaning / Disinfecting / Sanitizing
See: www.hennepin.us/childcaremanual
18
• Definitions• Mechanical/Chemical • Reducing Germs vs. Eliminating Germs
19
What to Clean?
Sanitizing
• Bleach
• Quaternary Ammonia Products (QUATS)
CHEMICAL HAZARDS
22
• Spills• Wrong Labels• Fumes• Follow MSDS/SDS for first aid
.
When are you in danger from chemicals at school?
Use ALL your senses to detect hazards!
Be Sure to Check Labels
Hazard CommunicationSafety Data Sheets (SDS)
(Formerly MSDS or Material Safety Data Sheets)
Include:Cleaning ChemicalsBleach Office supplies (e.g.
toner for copier-usually self contained)
Storage items in the classroom, janitor closet, kitchen
25
Chemical Hazards
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Environmental Hazards
Heat• Protecting students and staff from Heat StressCold• Protecting from
hypothermia and frostbite
Other Safety AreasFire preventionStairs (especially with long skirts, carrying items)Wet floors from cleaning or spillsHot coffee Electrical cordsPaper cutsIndoor air quality
Proper ventilation with chemical, use especially for Asthma and Allergy sensitivities
Restrict use of fragranceNoise - ear buds use
28
Safety Level of Noise in Classroom, Gym and School Environment
• dB (decibel) measures the sound level or loudness of an object or background noise.
• Teach your students about the damage they can do to their hearing with “ear buds” and loud music environments.
29
ERGONOMICS AND PERSONAL MEASURES
Ergonomics
Lifting techniques

Ergonomics ComputersLaptops Desk
33
BOTTOM LINE- Protect yourself
Personal SafetyBe aware of your surroundings Have keys in your handEvaluate the need for a purseCarry a flashlight at nightIf you feel threatened keep a clear head and decide on an action planIf threat is imminent, yell or call police
34
Healthy Lifestyle
A healthy lifestyle strengthens your immune system to increase the ability to fight pathogens:
• Nutrition
• Stress regulation• Physical Activity• Sleep
