• Over 6.7 million students took at least one online class during their Fall 2011 semester

• More than 32% of students take at least one online course

What is Online School?

0% Traditional Course where no online technology used—content is delivered in writing or orally

1 to 29% Web Facilitated Course that uses web-based technology to facilitate what is essentially a face-to-face course. May use a course management system (CMS) or web pages to post the syllabus and assignments.

20 to 79% Blended/Hybrid Course that blends online and face-to-face delivery. Substantial proportion of the content is delivered online, typically uses online discussions, and typically has a reduced number offace-to-face meetings.

80+% Online A course where most or all of the content is delivered online. Typically have no face-to-face meetings.

Advantages

• student-to-student and faculty-student communication

• Benefits of online forums

• Accessible instructors

• Specialized curriculum

• No physical attendance necessary

Disadvantages

• Views of online degree versus traditional schooling degree

• Lack of nonverbal communication

• Students work alone. Can lead to isolation

• Since students are on their own they may put off assignments

• Technology may fail

Cost

• Online education can be much cheaper than traditional school

• No longer paying for transportation, meal plans, room and board

• Scholarship and financial aid packages available

My Conclusion

• Whether or not online schooling is beneficial depends on the student
