on something very special.
Isn’t that the wish of most
music teachers …………..
that our students become
independent, creative
people who receive
satisfaction and joy from
their art? We teach for the
love of music and the
continuum of passing along
tradition and skills. June
says that the pottery shop
keeps her young and is one
of the best parts of her life.
May we all be so fortunate!

Volume XXXIII, No. 41
Happy New Year! I hope all of you are returning from the holidays with a renewed excitement for teaching. I have a story about a wonderful teacher for you……………..
My 90-year-old
stepmother, June, is an
active sculptor and potter
and has been for all of her
adult life. She lives in her
own lovely apartment in
an extended care
community in Florida.
When she and my father
were looking into elder
communities, the thing
that sold them on their
current home was the fact
that it had a pottery shop.
When June first moved to
the community, no one
was “minding the shop”, so
she slowly took over the
day-to-day running of the
clay studio. She soon
began to teach pottery
classes and to work with
people of all abilities.
Some would-be potters
left after a session or two,
some stayed for years
making very
basic items, and
some became
quite skilled.
One of June’s
most talented
students came
to the studio
when she was
in her fifties
with absolutely
no experience
in the medium.
She now is a
very talented
potter in her own right
with unique pieces
exhibited in numerous
galleries. June continues
to teach classes, give
lectures and train other
potters to run the shop.
Her wish is to create a
vibrant studio that can be
maintained by others, not
just by her. June loves
going to the pottery shop
every morning. She finds
fulfillment in her own
artistic creations and in the
knowledge that she is
giving something back to
the community and passing

Sharon Burbank, of Bedford, died December 15, 2010, at Home Health and Hospice House, Merrimack NH. Sharon was a singer, pianist, and a longtime member of NHMTA, serving on the board and actively participating in the organization.
For years Sharon ran the NHMTA Non-Competitive Evaluations program. She helped Marie Mendelow set up the Nashua Evaluations center, which has remained a huge center over the years. She also tapped Connie Chesebrough to be the site coordinator in Plymouth in the 1980’s and worked with her to build that site.
Sharon gave of her time and energy in many other capacities. She edited and published the Yearbook and newsletter, and was a hard-working member of the GSC committee (scheduling, printing the programs, registering the competitors, etc.) for many years. Her intelligence, efficiency and humor will be missed.

Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee’s Biography
Beginner and Advanced Level Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, February 9, 1938, and began her early musical training as a pianist in Boston with Antoine Louis Moeldner who studied with two of Leschetitzky's most illustrious pupils, Helen Hopekirk and Paderewski. Moeldner was also a teaching assistant to Ossip Gabrilovich in New York. Helen Hopekirk was a respected composer as well as pianist and served as a role model for Goolkasian Rahbee at an early age.
Goolkasian Rahbee continued her studies at Juilliard as a piano major and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria studying chamber music with Enrico Mainardi. In later years, she studied piano privately with David Saperton in New York and Lily Dumont, Russell Sherman, and Veronica Jochum in Boston.
At the age of 40, she began concentrating more seriously at composing and has since produced a large body of works for piano solo, orchestra, instrumental ensembles, percussion, and voice.
In 1985, she was elected President of American Women Composers, Massachusetts Chapter and founded its annual mara-thon. Her music has been performed in Argentina, Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy; Japan, Korea, Latvia; Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia, etc. and throughout the U.S.
As a first generation Armenian-American whose father was a survivor of the genocide, her music reflects a deep rooted ethnic background. The strong influences of her first spoken language, Armenian , and the folk music she grew up with, are important elements in her musical language. Her early love for music was sparked by her talented violinist mother.
Her older son David Alexander Rahbee, conductor of the “Fidelio Chamber Orchestra” living in Vienna, Austria, is begin-ning a conducting career in Europe and the US. Her younger son Adam Rahbee, a transportation engineering graduate of MIT, plays organ, clavichord and harpsichord.
Dianne Goolkasian Rahbee teaches piano privately at her home in Belmont, Massachusetts and gives workshops, lectures and master classes internationally.
Performance rights are licensed through BMI.

DORIS DODD SCHUSTER SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS
Two talented young musicians were awarded the Doris Dodd Schuster Scholarship for 2010. Mary Copeley, a student of Kathy Southworth, and Natalya Krykova, a student of Mila Filatova, will split the prize money.
Mary Copeley studied piano with Kathy Southworth for four years at the Concord Community Music School and organ with Kenneth Grinnell in Manchester. Mary is currently a freshman organ performance major at Westminster
Choir College. Her career goal is to become a concert artist touring and performing on organs all over the world. She also hopes to some day become the director of music/principal organist at a cathedral and to give private lessons.
Natalya Krykova has studied piano with Mila Filatova since 2004. Natalya has had extensive performing experience as a soloist and a chamber musician. She is a first year music major at the College of the Holy Cross. Natalya
hopes to use her degree to teach music to people of all ages and to bring the joy of music to others.
The Doris Dodd Schuster Scholarship is awarded yearly to a first-year college student majoring in music. Schuster was an active member of NHMTA for many years. Applicants must be New Hampshire residents and must submit an essay, resume, transcript, recommendation letter, and an audio performance recording.
