A cts of Kindness Day, sponsored by the Rio RanchoPublic Schools anti-bullying committee and the City ofRio Rancho, is being held on Saturday, October 21,

noon to 3 PM at Haynes Park. The goal of Acts of KindnessDay is to get people to think about how they treat oneanother and encourage a culture of civility in our community. The event draws its inspiration from Rachel’s Challenge, aprogram which urges teens to strive for an atmosphere ofkindness and compassion in schools and to reject bullyingand violence. Rachel’s Challenge is named in honor ofRachel Scott, one of the students killed in the Columbine HighSchool shootings in 1999. In keeping with Rachel’s legacy,Acts of Kindness Day encourages students to reach out toand connect with all of their peers, especially those whomight feel ignored or threatened, and to treat each other with

courtesy and respect and to banish bullying.

The free event features games and activities for children, musical performances from student groups, and booths whereschools, organizations, and businesses share good thingsthey do for the community. Participants are invited to helpcreate a “chain of kindness” and write down somethingkind they did for someone and include it as a link in thechain. Participants can also pledge to do something kindfor someone else. Exhibitors are not there to sell, market, oradvertise. They are there to demonstrate their commitment tocommunity and their pledge to support kindness and courtesy.

Mayor Gregg Hull and Dr. Cleveland are scheduled toopen the event.
