Lincoln Middle School has beenpatiently awaiting a new gym,which will bring Lincoln’s PE facilitiesto the level of other RRPS middleschools. The project is slated to goto bid with construction beginningwhen a contractor is approved. TheLincoln gym and associated campusimprovements are in the last phaseof the 2012 bond cycle. A cts of Kindness Day, sponsored by the Rio RanchoPublic Schools anti-bullying committee and the City ofRio Rancho, is being held on Saturday, October 21,

noon to 3 PM at Haynes Park. The goal of Acts of KindnessDay is to get people to think about how they treat oneanother and encourage a culture of civility in our community.The event draws its inspiration from Rachel’s Challenge, aprogram which urges teens to strive for an atmosphere ofkindness and compassion in schools and to reject bullyingand violence. Rachel’s Challenge is named in honor ofRachel Scott, one of the students killed in the Columbine HighSchool shootings in 1999. In keeping with Rachel’s legacy,Acts of Kindness Day encourages students to reach out toand connect with all of their peers, especially those whomight feel ignored or threatened, and to treat each other with

courtesy and respect and to banish bullying.

The free event features games and activities for children,musical performances from student groups, and booths whereschools, organizations, and businesses share good thingsthey do for the community. Participants are invited to helpcreate a “chain of kindness” and write down somethingkind they did for someone and include it as a link in thechain. Participants can also pledge to do something kindfor someone else. Exhibitors are not there to sell, market, oradvertise. They are there to demonstrate their commitment tocommunity and their pledge to support kindness and courtesy.

Mayor Gregg Hull and Dr. Cleveland are scheduled toopen the event.

P icking a career is a dauntingtask. Without guidance, studentsmay graduate with only a vague

idea what they want to do in life andhow to achieve it.

Naviance is a college and careerreadiness platform that helps connectacademic achievement to post-secondary goals. Naviance helpshigh school students understand theirunique strengths; connect their intereststo careers; set goals; and develop self-knowledge and personal motivation.

Rachel Yazzie, a CHS Senior,said “Naviance really helped meduring my high school years. I likebeing able to look for scholarship

opportunities and collegesincluding what they require foracceptance. I also like that youcan let your counselor know howthey are doing as a counselorby taking surveys for them aboutgraduation requirements and classpresentations. I recommend to allstudents who are about start highschool, take advantage of thisprogram while in high school. Itwill help you when you hit senioryear. I use this program a lot andnot just when your counselor ismeeting with you during the school

year. During your free time check it outand show your parents this amazingprogram.”

Throughout the school yearcounselors work with students to utilizeNaviance to help guide them withcareer and post-secondary goals andwork on their Next Step Plans 8th-12thgrade. It is a free service for all RRPShigh school students and their parentswith a comprehensive website thatassists in managing the college andcareer exploration process. Studentsare able to complete personality andcareer inventories, build resumesand utilize PrepMe which is an ACTpreparation tool.

Spanish teacher Aaron Taylor and Counselor LorraineChavez were “Staff Homecoming King and Queen 2017”.Taylor and Chavez were among RRHS staff members whoraised money for a week from students and staff, withthe top male and female fundraisers being named StaffKing and Queen. Over $1,400 was raised adding to thehigh school’s total of $4,000 for Hurricane relief.

A Rio Rancho Middle School pep rally beganwith a ‘Pony Race’ between staff members“sponsored” by students, raising money forHurricane Harvey relief.

The Cleveland High School Debate team competed at Los Alamos High School. Andrew Schumann took 1st place inthe Big Questions Debate with the Resolve: “Humans are fundamentally different from other animals.” CameronMroz, Ashley Bradshaw, Hao Wei, Carlo Brigante, and Jordan Moody also participated.

RRHS RamWrestlers participated in the Buddy Walk this pastweekend to raise $1,183 for the National Down Syndrome Society.
