Long Standing Questions of Nuclear Structure Physics

• What are the limits for existence of nuclei?– Where are the proton and neutron drip lines

situated? – Where does Mendeleyev’s table end?

• How does the nuclear force depend on varying proton-to-neutron ratios?– What is the isospin dependence of the spin-orbit

force?– How does shell structure change far away from

stability?

• How to explain collective phenomena from individual motion?– What are the relevant degrees of freedom and

symmetries of the many-body system?

• How are complex nuclei built from their basic constituents?– What is the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction?– How does it connect to QCD?

• What are the nuclei relevant for astrophysical processes and what are their properties?

Summary and Outlook

• The FAIR facility is the central future project for the European Nuclear and Hadron Physics Communities

• The NUSTAR Facility with the Super-FRS covers a wide range of topics concerning the investigation of exotic nuclei in the areas of: Nuclear Structure, Nuclear Astrophysics, Nuclear Reactions

• NUSTAR will address fundamental questions concerning:

– the Structure und Dynamics of the many-body system atomic nucleus

– the Nature of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction• relevant components, isospin dependence, correlations

– Nuclear Astrophysics and the Origin of the Elements

• The Super-FRS is part of the first stage of FAIR construction

• There will be a continuous transition from the current FRS program to the future activities at FAIR
