Does this sound like you?
Go Wild 4 Measurement
Each tool box contains2 x books, puppet, 6 non-standard manipulatives, 1 x 30cm ruler, 1x 8m tape measure 3x 1m novelty tape measures, 1 set of word wall cards, 2 novelty chalk holders, Ipad with 6 apps and 4 website links, sheets, 3 measurement games, 8 complete measurement activities, 1 set of non-standard unit teacher task cards, 1 teacher card for each activity, comparison chart, student role cards, self-assessment poster, self-assessment recording dot stickers.
Learning IssuesVocabulary
• A learner’s sense of measurement can be inhibited when
they have difficulty understanding and communicating
vocabulary associated with measurement that relate to
length. (Booker, Bond, Sparrow & Swan, 2010, p.492).
Non-Standard Units
• Likely difficulties occur when non-standard units are not
used in a uniform manner e.g. lined up in a zigzag pattern,
leaving gaps or overlapping (Booker et al., 2010, p.497).
Standard Units
• Students inability to use standard measuring devices in an
appropriate and accurate manner can cause confusion
when measuring. e.g. incorrect alignment of the zero or
spaces are counted rather than the marked points
(Booker et al., 2010, p.501).
Vocabulary
Standard Units
Non-Standard
Units
Tool Box• Traditional methods of teaching measurement involved rote
memorisation and formulas in order to complete pen to paper activities
thus resulting in a lack of understanding and ability to make meaning
(Siemon et al, 2011, p215).
• This Tool Box was designed to encourage students to actively engage in
measuring activities in order to develop their sense of length
measurement (Siemon et al, 2011, p215).
• Target audience: Prep – Year 5
• A jungle theme used throughout activities to engage learners. Students
are more likely to engage in learning when classroom tasks relate to their
own interests (Marzano & Pickering, 1997, p.32).
• Tool box encourages: -
- Individual learning -
- Collaborative learning
- Whole class interaction
VocabularyBooks
“Books contain mathematical vocabulary, pictures and story lines with mathematical
themes and are guaranteed to provide an extra, meaningful dimension to teaching and learning” (Fox & Surtees, 2010, p.22).
These books provide students with modelled examples of length comparisons as well as exposing learners to vocabulary
such as: short, tall, taller, shorter, long, longer & longest.
Word Wall
A set of word wall cards are provided to reinforce knowledge and understanding of length measurement (Fox & Surtees, 2010,
p.22).
VocabularyComparison Chart
This resource allows students to directly compare a range of objects against each other
to determine which is longer. This process encourages students to use language associated
with measurement.
The long and the short of itThis activity can be completed individually or as a rotational group activity. Students have a set of 10 cards that require them to compare lengths and decide which is
shorter, taller or longer.

Comparisons of attributes help to
reinforce understanding of
vocabulary meanings (Booker et al,
2010, p.493)
Non-Standard UnitsThe tool box contains 6 manipulatives that are required
to complete numerous non-standard measurement activities. Initial activities require learners to use unifix
cubes, paperclips and magnetic cubes. This helps to minimise any likely difficulties that may occur as it is
impossible to leave gaps or make overlaps (Siemon, 2011, p.447). A set of 9 activity cards and a QR code scavenger
hunt provide opportunities for students to practise measuring using non-standard units.
Comparing Names
• Connecting cubes ensures there are no gaps or over laps.• Reinforces vocabulary terms e.g. my name is shorter than…• Cross curriculum links e.g. literacy recognising letters and colours• Assists with fine motor skills when writing letters• Assists with letter formation

Standard Units
These devices provide opportunities for students develop their number and spatial skills in practical situations
(Booker, Briggs, Davey & Nisbet, 1992, p.281)
The tool box contains several measuring devices that are used within everyday life.
These devices promote discussions and collaboration among peers.
‘The Great Leg Race’ is a great way to introduce learners to standard units.
Engaging and hands on!
Estimation
“Estimation is essential to understanding the concept of measurement” (Siemon
et al, 2011, p.219.
Estimating Snakes
This is a great hands on activity that incorporates physical movement. Each snake is hidden around
the room. Students practise estimating the
length of the snake before they check the accuracy of their guess
by using a ruler. This activity encourages
students to shape the skill of measuring
accurately.
“Technology provides
powerful teaching tools
that can be used to
develop understanding
as well as to facilitate
practise” (Siemon et
al., 2011, p.53).
QR Codes
QR JengaIn pairs or small groups students
take it in turns to pick a block. Students scan the QR code to see if their If they answer is correct. If
so they get to keep the block to start building their own tower. The student with the most blocks wins. This activity focuses on language as they convert from one unit of
measurement to another.
The tool box contains 4 highly engaging resources that incorporate the use of QR codes.
A great tool to promote independence!

Ipad Included! This tool box contains an iPad mini with a folder full
of educational resources. It includes 6 apps and a note book containing 4 links to engaging websites!
Technology is an inclusive tool that helps cater to different learning styles (Snowman, 2009, p.123)
CHECK THIS OUT!
Use this ICT tool as a catalyst to enhance and promote engagement
among your students!
Measure your body parts and compare them with life size
measurements of animals from around the world!
Self and peer assessment benefits:
• Increased sense of responsibility and ownership of their own learning and the learning of others (Siemon et al., 2011, p.135).
• Students become more reflective in the learning process (Siemon et al., 2011, p.135)
• Self-assessment is a valuable tool for teachers that helps to inform future learning (Snowman et al., 2009, p511).
Self & Peer Assessment
The tool box contains self-assessment
resources that assist learners to reflect on
their own learning and develop metacognitive
skills. It also allows for students to assess
their peers when working collaboratively.
