Membership means having a say!Over the years, NTEU has successfully defended the key professional and employment rights of university staff, particularly through collective bargaining.
In 2009 and 2010, NTEU will negotiate new Collective Agreements with all universities, seeking significant improvements to pay and conditions.
Most of your key conditions of employment will be covered by those Agreements, and it will be Union members who will decide the priorities for bargaining each time a new Agreement is negotiated.
Who is eligible to join NTEU?All staff – academic and general – employed in Australian universities are eligible to join NTEU.
Also eligible are:
• Employees of student unions and other student organisations.• Employees of university and college companies.• Academic and research staff in research institutes.• Employees of RACGP.• ELICOS staff employed in, or in connection with, higher
education institutions.• PACCT staff in TAFE colleges in Victoria.• Adult education employees in Victoria (CAE).
DEFENDING YOUR PAY AND WORKING CONDITIONS THROUGH COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AND INDUSTRIAL REPRESENTATION
Why join a union?Union membership is a solid insurance policy for workplace industrial representation. It provides you with the knowledge that you are standing alongside your colleagues to support everyone’s pay and conditions.
How can the Union help you?Our professional and helpful staff can answer any queries you have about the Union and our work, such as
collective bargaining, industrial representation, and lobbying for the higher education sector.
For more information, contact your local NTEU Branch or Division Office (see back of this brochure for details) or visit www.nteu.org.au.
Benefits & discountsNTEU provides a wide range of discounts and benefits exclusively for members:
• Low cost loans and banking.• Discounted travel insurance.• Accommodation and travel
discounts.• Taxation service.• Low cost health insurance. • Discounted dental and
medical services.• Discount new cars.• Access to legal advice and
financial advisers.• Union Shopper.• Dining planner.• NTEU Wine Club.• Regular publications covering
workplace and professional issues.
• Comprehensive website.
What’s the cost?Fees are set as a percentage of salary (1% for most Branches), which means the less you earn, the less you pay! For an average university employee, membership costs just $11 per week (tax deductible).
Rates are discounted for casual/sessional staff.

RESEARCH☛STAFF
NTEU has consulted widely with higher education staff
about the employment issues that concern them
most. That consultation has led to our key bargaining
claims.
NTEU bargaining has delivered Australia’s leading
paid maternity leave standard. However, we still need more flexible working arrangements and better
carer’s leave.
The Howard Government stripped job security
guarantees from Agreements. Collective
Bargaining is our opportunity to regain these
conditions.
Many universities classify general staff unfairly,
resulting in lower salaries. NTEU is seeking clear, comprehensive and
objective general staff classification procedures.
Ensuring our universities are properly funded is vital if they are to maintain their reputation for world class education and research.
NTEU is seeking to improve the lot of research staff,
who are mostly employed on fixed-term or casual contracts with inferior
employment conditions.
NTEU is campaigning to reinvigorate Australia’s universities under the banner of Our☛Universities☛Matter☛–☛Investing☛in☛People☛and☛Society.☛ Australia’s universities matter. They advance knowledge, foster critical thinking and public discourse, train our professions and provide life-long learning. Universities are central to Australia’s cultural, social and economic development.

CASUAL☛STAFF SUSTAINABILITY
A 20% salary increase is needed over the next three
years to keep salaries in line with other sectors and to ensure we stay
internationally competitive.
All universities have felt the effects of staff cuts
and increasing class sizes. In bargaining, NTEU
is claiming clear and substantive regulation of
workloads.
Our emphasis in bargaining is to redress the effects of
the previous Government’s laws that watered down NTEU’s highly successful Indigenous employment
clauses.
Academic freedom and institutional autonomy are essential defining
characteristics of universities. NTEU is seeking
to protect these through legislation.
A key aspect of NTEU’s Collective Bargaining is to
improve pay and conditions for casual academic staff.
For full details visit www.unicasual.com.au.
Universities should play key leadership roles in
finding solutions for climate change and modelling best practice in environmentally
sustainable operations.

Under this Agreement, you arrange to have deducted from your account, on the 15th day in each calendar month (working day), the appropri-ate amount of dues and levies, payable under NTEU’s Rules, to NTEU (the debit user). If you are uncertain as to when the debit will be processed please con-tact NTEU on (03) 9254 1910. These arrangements will not change, although the amount may vary in accordance with decisions of your elected NTEU
Councils and Committees. You will be notified, in writing, of any changes at least fourteen (14) days prior to their implementation. 3. For all matters relating to the Direct Debit arrangements, including deferments and alterations, you will need to send written correspondence to PO Box 1323, Sth Mel-bourne VIC 3205 and allow 10 days for the amend-ments to take effect. 4. You may stop any Debit item or cancel a DDR with NTEU at any time in writ-ing. All correspondence is to be addressed to NTEU General Secretary, PO Box 1323, Sth Melbourne VIC
3205. 5. Should any dispute ever arise between you and the NTEU about your payments you should advise NTEU General Secretary in writing or by email in the first instance and, if necessary, NTEU will take advice from your financial institution. 6. It is your responsibility to have sufficient clear funds to meet the costs of payment under this Agreement. NTEU, however, does not have a policy of recovering any penalty fees from members if debit items are returned unpaid by the ledger financial institution. 7. Direct debiting through BECS is not available on
all types of accounts; and account details should be checked against a recent statement from your financial institution. If uncertain, check with your ledger financial institution before completing the DDR. 8. NTEU does not use your financial records and account details for any purpose except the col-lection of union dues and the information is only available to a small number of NTEU employees. The details may be provided to your financial insti-tution if a claim was made against that institution of an alleged incorrect or wrongful debit. You may resign by written notice to the Division or Branch Secretary. Where you
