Indian Rock Summer Day Camp has new look, but the same fun By KELLY BROWN@THEBRISTOLPRESS

Things are looking a little bit different at The Environmental Learning Centers of Connecti-cut’s Indian Rock Summer Day Camp this year.

The Indian Rock Summer Day Camp has a new look due to the covid-19 pandemic, but it is run-ning as planned and is offering nine weeks of summer fun for children entering kindergarten through eighth grade.

“Many camps decided not to open this year but we worked hard to make sure the kids and their families could have this opportunity after being cooped up at home for so long,” Execu-tive Director Scott Heth said. “They are thrilled to be getting outside and seeing their friends again.”

Indian Rock Summer Camp runs from June 22 through August 21. There are still spaces available. Their camp takes place at the 280-acre Indian Rock Nature Preserve. Children interact with farm animals on Indian Rock’s educational farm, canoe and swim in the 10-acre Indian Lake, discover the ancient “Indian Rock” and explore over five miles of trails. Each week features a different theme for

each age group. “Our protocols and procedures

to keep everyone safe continue to be very well received by both the campers and their parents,” Heth said.

Their protocols include curbside camper check-in and check-out, temperature and health checks for all campers and staff upon arrival, limited group size and constant separa-tion between groups, increased cleaning and sanitation, masks worn by all staff and increased tent usage for covered outdoor activity space.

“Everyone from campers to staff to camper families are

working together to ensure a safe and fun camp experience despite the challenges we face,” Heth said. “We require our coun-selors to be at least 18 years of age. Many were campers them-selves, so they have a long his-tory with our camp and create a great rapport with our campers.”

Families can register for Indian Rock Summer Camp online. Financial assistance is available and families are encouraged to take advantage of scholarship opportunities. The Indian Rock Nature Pre-serve, established in 1977, has educated hundreds of thousands of children about nature and the environmental since its incep-tion. The Indian Rock Nature Preserve is owned and operated by the Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut, Inc., a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organiza-tion that also owns the Harry C. Barnes Memorial Nature Center and over 750 acres of wildlife habitat in Bristol, Burlington and Southington.
