“Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do
for your country.”
It is a notable quotation from U.S. President John F. Kennedy during
his inaugural address. This passage challenged his countrymen to do their
responsibility as a citizen which is to serve and protect the state.
This principle can be the reason why the 1987 constitution
mandated all the college students to take up NSTP or National Service
Training Program (NSTP). A program aimed at enhancing civic consciousness
and defense preparedness in the youth by developing the ethics of service
and patriotism while undergoing training in any of its three program
components. Its various components are specially designed to enhance
youth’s active contribution to the general welfare.
The Act affirmed that the prime duty of the government was to serve
and protect its citizens. In turn, it shall be the responsibility of all the citizens
to defend the security of the State and because of this the government may
require each citizen to render personal, military or civil service. Recognizing
the youth's vital role in national building, the State shall promote civic
consciousness among the youth and shall develop their physical, moral,
spiritual, intellectual and social well being. It shall inculcate in the youth
patriotism, nationalism and advance their involvement in public and civic
affairs.

This summer, from April 22 to May 13, we had our NSTP class under
the supervision of Mrs. Miriam San Diego. We underwent different activities
like the water survival, rescue training and basic life support. All of the
activities serve as a preparation in case of national emergency or when the
state needed the help of its countrymen.

We did not expect too much because we don’t want to disappoint
ourselves in case we did not meet those expectations. We just want to enjoy
and have fun this summer. But of course, there are things that we want to
experience. We like to do some outreach program, to learn new things that
we can apply in our daily lives and to meet new friends and people.
Again, we just want to enjoy the summer vacation while having our
NSTP so we hope that this course will not be demanding or serious. We want
to have some rest from the stressful subjects that we had during the regular
class.
As a student, being adventurous is normal that’s why we’re hoping to
face some challenging activities where we can show our abilities and skills.
In this world, we are exposed in different kinds of people. Some people
come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay and become your friends. So
while taking our NSTP this summer we are open to encounter fresh faces and

make friends on them. But at the end, we should not forget the real essence
why we should take the NSTP course.

Report:
On April 25, 2013 we went to Parada Sports Complex to have our
water survival. Some of the students were exempted because they already
had their swimming class in PE 3. For those who underwent the training, they
were asked first to feel the water and do the bubbles. It was done in order to
get rid of their fear on water. They learned the basic skills like the different
kind of floating, and the flutter kick.
After the water survival, we had the jungle survival. In this training,
we were taught to make fire using the bamboo stick. We can also make a
spoon, plate glass using the same materials.
Expectation:
We’re hoping to have some camping where the jungle survival can be
taught so it will become more realistic.
Recommendation:
More facilities in Parada Sports Complex where we can assure our privacy.
More cubicles or room where we can change our clothes.
Camping for jungle survival.

Report:
On April 29, 2013 we underwent some
training related to rescuing. We perform the
rappelling, wall climbing and zip line. Before doing
those activities, the instructors taught us the skills
needed. They introduced us the different
equipments like the rope and the karabiner. They
also showed the improvised harness using the rope made from
Manila hemp and the steps on how to do it. They demonstrated
the proper position and handling on the rope.
Expectation:
Actually, the only expectation is that the activity on this day will be
hard and challenging.
Recommendation:
We noticed that the equipments are damaged and old. We understand
because it is a public institution. And we think that the place can only
accommodate a maximum of 50 to 60 individuals. So 100 individuals can
make the place congested. There is also a lack on ventilation.

Report:
On April 29, 2013 at the Rescue 177 Training Center, we had
our Basic Life Support Training. This is one of the requirements in NSTP .
The activity starts at 12 o’clock in the afternoon. The students are under
the supervision of registered medical officials some are professor from
other universities and some are registered nurse. This training gives the
listeners all the theories needed in dealing with life threatening
emergencies. We also had the chance to perform what we had learned. In
our group Ellyson and Nestie were tasked to do the cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation.
Expectations
In this activity we expect to have more knowledge and new
theories about emergency situation that we can easily apply. The Training
Program meets our expectations; the different theories are explained well in
a “spoon feed “like manner.
Recommendations
Before, during and after the training we had some observations and
recommendations that can improve for the NSTP next year.
As we arrive on the venue, we observed that the place is quite small
for the large number of people. The place became overcrowded.
It is an open area. In our case, there are two batch of students; 1 st is
for the basic life support training and the other one is for the rescue

other batch of students who are shouting at that time.

After all the activities, we can say that it meets our expectation. We
enjoyed every activity that you had offer to us. We learned new skills that we
can used and apply in our daily lives and during emergency situation. Some
of the students had already faced their fear. We also had the chance to
encounter people that sooner become our friends.
We just want to recognize our professor Mrs. Miriam San Diego that
makes this course interesting, fun and memorable. We had fun on every
teambuilding activity that we performed in class. Because of her coolness,
we enjoy this course that contributes in meeting our expectations. Her
humor makes the discussion alive.
Like what we said on our expectation, we want to have some rest
from stressful days during the regular class. Meeting this expectation is
possible because of the professor that actively participated and contributed
their skills and knowledge in making this course exciting and motivating. We
think that Mr. Ricardo Francisco did his job well and effective who is in
charge in implementing this program.

There is no perfect in this world that’s why there’s always room for
improvement. Here are the observations and recommendation for the next
NSTP class next summer:
More on film showing. It is good to have some film viewing but make
sure that the film is not too old.
Some of the equipments are malfunctioning. The television screen is
black and white.
On rescue training, the place should be well ventilated. Avoid the
overcrowding of the students. There should be a divider or room where
we can focus and not be distracted by the other students.
More and new exciting activities like camping for jungle survival.
Show or present the list of activities for the whole period of this course.
