National Height Modernization Program Update

National Height Modernization Partner Meeting

Silver Spring, MD

August 19, 2011

Advance science, models, tools, and education in order to:

• Achieve National Height Modernization Program (NHMP)

goals

• Transition to new geopotential datum* (c. 2022)

*New geopotential datum is a priority of NGS Ten Year Plan

STRATEGY

• Access to accurate, reliable heights nationally

• Consistent standards across the nation

• Data, technology, and tools that yield consistent results

regardless of terrain and circumstances

• “Maintain-able” system and process

NHMP GOALS

Science: NHMP supported projects to enhance vertical component of NSRS.

1.GRAV-D fieldwork and data processing to support a 1 cm geoid and the

new geopotential datum

2.Pilot Project in North Carolina to produce a new set of instructions for

FEMA floodplain mapping based on access to the new datums

3. Texas Geoid Slope Validation Survey engaging a variety of testing

methods to address achievable accuracy of a gravimetric geoid model

4. International Great Lakes Datum (IGLD) fieldwork and data processing

completed to update the IGLD, benefitting US-Canada boundary region

NHMP ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Models and tools: NHMP supported many recent NGS products including.

1. Geoid09 release and Geoid12 development

2. HTDP development in partnership with Scripps and University of

Alaska Fairbanks

3. VTDP development including repeat surveys in Southern Louisiana and

subsidence monitoring in Harris-Galveston Subsidence District

4. Transformation tool between epochs after National Adjustment of 2011

NHMP ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Education: NHMP continued to support education and outreach.

1. Monthly teleconferences, now with guest speakers

2. FIG Conference, Australia in April 2010

3. Federal Summit in May 2010

4. State conferences; 2009-2011 events in AK, CO, ID, IL, IN, LA, MD, MO,

NB, NH, NJ, OH, OK, PA, TX, and UT

5. ACSM / Survey Summit / ESRI User Conference in July 2011

6. LiDAR workshop and Partner Meeting in August 2011

NHMP ACCOMPLISHMENTS

• Support of NGS projects (e.g. GRAV-D) and products (e.g.

Geoid models, HTDP, and VTDP) will continue.

• New initiatives may include:

• Developing National Height Modernization Plan (NHMP)

• Updating Height Modernization Guidelines, NGS 58 and

NGS 59

• Infrastructure gap (e.g. CORS) analysis

• Modernize NGS geodetic control datasheets
