Report: Dheepti O. J. Photos: Madhan Kumar

On a grey evening on December 11 as the seasonal chill began to take effect, Sri Kapali Temple came alive for the traditional Karthigai Deepam celebration.

Inside the temple, temple priests performed special rituals and went on to place the earthen oil lamps at the vimanams above the sannidhis of Sri Murugan, Sri Kapaleeswarar and Sri Karpagambal.

People kept streaming in and many lit earthen oil lamps on the platform set up near Sri Annamalayar Sannidhi. They had done so here through the previous day when the festival was celebrated in Thiruvannamalai.

At the Navaratri mandapam, the panchamurtis – Sri Ganapathy, Sri Kapaleeswarar, Sri Karpagambal, Sri Murugan and Sri Chandikeswarar were decorated with colourful flowers and jewellery.

Later, moving their bodies to the music of the nadaswaram and tavil, volunteers carried the idols that were placed on palanquins and moved in a procession around the temple and then oustide, to the 16-pillar mandapam on Sannidhi Street.

Traffic movement was restricted on a section of East Mada Street opposite Rasi Silks where the chokka panai made of palmyra and coconut leaves was set up. It was then set alight as part of the symbolic act and as the flames rose up, hundreds of people gathered to view the sight.

Later, the panchamurtis were taken in a procession around the Mada Streets. People had placed lit oil lamps in front of shops and houses on the streets. And the few thousand earthen oil lamps that volunteers had set up and lit that evening on all the steps of the temple tank created a magical image that December night.

CIVIC WORKERS DE-SILT DRAINS IN SAN THOME

For the past few days, Chennai Corporation’s contract workers are desilting storm water drains (SWD) alongside San Thome High Road which seem to have been filled up with muck and debris and blocked free flow of rainwater.

The road is always flooded in the monsoon season because the facility to drain water has been poor.

Now, a section of pavement near San Thome MTC bus stop has been dug up for the current civic work. Workers say it will take about a week to complete the job.

Meanwhile, people who use this part of the road say that barricading of the dug up area is required when work is in progress to warn people of the excavated pavement area.

Said Sita, a resident of San Thome, “Barricading the dug-up area with a light tape is not enough. This is a busy area and the dug-up drains pose a danger for pedestrians at night.”

Chennai City Police are on a campaign to make peo-ple aware of the Kavalan SOS App which can come in handy when people feel unsafe or a crime is attempted or committed. The App alerts the police double fast and helps police respond locally.

To promote the App and its usage, Chennai Com-missioner of Police, A. K. Viswanathan took part in a awareness programme held at Queen Mary’s College on Dec.10. Senior police officers were also present.

A few hundred college girls attended this event. The college principal, Dr. S. Shanthi welcomed the guests.

On the dais along with the police commissioner were senior police officers Prem Anand Sinha (ad-ditional commissioner), Deshmukh Shekhar Sanjay (deputy commissioner of Mylapore zone) and Sudhakar (joint commissioner).

It was party time for the boarders of St. Bede’s Anglo - Indian Hr Sec. School in San Thome on Friday last week. A time to celebrate the Christmas spirit. In keeping with an an-nual tradition on this campus, the school’s alumni got up this Christmas celebration at the Savio Hall, with donations made by old Bedeans. Actress Sri Ranjani was a special guest.

There was carols singing, messages by guests, gifting by Santa Claus, music and dance and a special dinner.

Senior Salesian priests also took part in the event. Fr. Gerald Miranda who oversees links with the alumni associations of all Salesian schools and Fr. Stanley Ignatius, rector and correspondent of St. Bede’s were among them.

    V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

Rani Rodrigo called me early. Would I like to place orders for cakes, she asked.

It was the first week of November and I was won-dering why she had called this soon. I have to prepare early to bottle the fruit, she told me and I understood.

Rani makes some of the best cakes this side of the city. Only two kinds - Love Cake and Rich Fruit Cake. And since she bakes at home and takes all the time in the world to have them done the right way, Rani does not take big orders nor does she advertise her seasonal food.

People who are passionate about cooking love to serve to people who appreciate good, home-made food. And December is the time to enjoy some great food and drink.

It is also a time when a family can come together. Not just for a Christmas lunch or dinner. But to prepare sweets and snacks on the nights leading to the season.

If there was one Christmas goodie that I learnt to make well it had to be the kul-kuls. Now do not ask me how this simple snack came to be. It is popular among Christians in Goa, Karnataka and in Kerala. And remains so where traditional food has been nurtured in home kitchens.

Kul-kuls are easy to make. Softened wheat flour dough which has lots of egg and some ghee is first prepared, little round balls are made from it . . .a few hundred. These are then pressed flat on clean wooden combs and rolled in, to give them a shape and design and then dropped into boiling oil. Later, the crisp kul-kuls are dropped into liquid sugar syrup, taken out and left to get a coat of the sugar.

A few Decembers ago, I sat and watched Vimala Padmaraj make her famed rose cookies at her San Thome home. When she is in town, Vimala starts her Christmas cooking with rose cookies. It is a slow and patient process. But it is worth the effort.

Vimala possesses large tin boxes which used to be popular in the 60s and 70s, to store dry foodstuff. Into these go the rose cookies, the kul-kuls and the rice murukkus. To be shared with guests, friends and neighbours on Christmas day.

Some traditions linger. Sustaining them needs many hands. Festivals provide the occasion.

    Foodies and sabha canteens

Being a foodie, I look forward to the canteens opening at local sabhas.

They serve some delicious food and snacks and some offer great meals in the afternoons.

I hope sabha staff do not stop us foodies from patronising these canteens this December.

    - Shyam Sunder, San Thome

    Christmasy lookDriving on San

Thome High Road, one notices that lit stars and decorations for the Christmas season have been put up in some school and church campuses. This makes for a nice visual sight at night in this area.

I wish more houses and shops here could also decorate and illuminate their spaces and add to the bright festival feel.

    - Robin Samuel, R. A. Puram

Better protection needed around drains work in San ThomeWorkers have dug up a busy part of the pavement and the road area on San Thome High

Road. The work area covers a busy MTC bus stop. They have used only a thin tape as a warning to pedestrians and others to keep off from this

work area. This is just not enough because people may not sight the tape after dusk.Since the pits are deep and wide, there is every chance of a mishap of people slipping into the

dug-up drains. Chennai Corporation officials of this area must think of better ways to section off the work area. A thin tape will not do in this case.

Tribute to a music legendV. Dakshinamoorthy was a legend in the world of classical

and film music. Recently, a drama based on this legend’s life and work was organized by some of his relatives and fans at Mylapore Fine Arts Club (MFAC) sabha hall and it was a good effort.

In Kerala, Dakshinamoorthy was known by thousands of people even in rural areas and among families. His music and songs are evergreen. The play was a good tribute to this legend.

More on Mylapore’s little post officeMany Mylaporeans showed interest in the Sub-Post Office

on Musiri Subramaniam Road, attached to Vivekananda College. Many Mylaporeans who live in the area were not aware of this facility and have started to make use of it.

Following my visit to this rather quaint little post office, I also wanted to mention what I saw - the old world fire extinguishers which are hung from a stand in a corner here. Metal buckets which are normally filled with sand which you throw at a fire when it occurs.

The buckets here were empty though, which meant the old facility was really not in use and of use today.

This sighting also brought back memories.

As a boy in an old town in Tamil Nadu, we watched movies in a tin-

roofed theatre and inside, there would be half a dozen of these red buckets (with the words FIRE on them ) and I wondered how just a few buckets of sand could save a theatre from a raging fire if it broke out.

    P. S. : The ugly side of this little post office which cannot be blamed on the staff is the sight of empty liquor bottles lying outside its walls - obviously, tipplers use this place after dusk to make merry.
