Guide dogs and their significance

Future guide dogs begin training at a very young age. As puppies they are given to a specific “Puppy Walker,” who will love, train, andcoachthe puppies in the hopes of them becoming well-qualified and adapt guide dogs.

German Shepherds, Black and Yellow Labradors, and Golden Retrievers are the most commonly used breeds for guide and police dogs because of their obedience, quick and easy learning/ training skills, loyalty, and companionship.

Crosswalk skills, including intersection navigation and proper curb techniques, are an integral part of guide dog training. A prospective guide dog will not “graduate” from training unlesshe/she learns how to properly navigate curbs and intersections, a natural part of everyday life that can be a matter of life or death for the blind.

Guide dogs can be trained to do many things, including operating an ATM!

Police dogs are just as important and widely used as guide dogs. With unfailing loyalty and obedience, police dogs serve not only their partners, but the entire community, as well.

SAR (search and rescue) dogs are used for locating people in debris, rubble, avalanches, etc. Cadaver dogs are used specifically for detecting human remains.

Working dogs are also used to detect narcotics, such as heroine, cocaine, and marijuana, along with bombs and other explosives.

Guide dogs provide more than just the eyes to see or feet to guide, they are loyal and obedient creatures that truly care and understand there partners.
