~Population & Pollution~~River Pollution~

Mrs. Kathy Lund Rogers7th Grade Social Studies

INDIAIndia is a subcontinent – large landmass, but

smaller than a continent.India’s population is OVER 1 BILLIONMost of the population is in citiesMajor cities face overpopulationPoverty is a HUGE problemThere are people that live in rural areas &

work as farmers.

CHINA

Majority of the population lives on the EAST coast near rivers or coastal areas for trade

People in west China, work as farmersCity populations are growing because of

industry & trade

KOREAS

People in North & South Korea tend to live in cities

North Korea has large deposits of coal, iron, and other minerals – makes it VERY rich in resources

South Korea does not have many natural resources

JAPANJapan is a small island that is heavily over-

populated, which causes pollution problemsSpace is limited!World’s strongest fishing economiesMost of the food is IMPORTED because there

are so many mountains

Causes of Pollution7 of the 10 most polluted cities in the world

are located in ChinaCaused by number of cars, factories, and

burning of coal for electricityAsian Brown Cloud – caused by too much

pollution in the air. A brown haze that can alter paths of monsoons, reduce photosynthesis, increase human respiratory problems, & reduce solar radiation on earth

Waste from factories, motor vehicles, forest fires

SOLUTIONREDUCE POPULATION – China = one child

per family policy

**China has the highest population in the world.**

**India has the second highest population.**

GANGES RIVER POLLUTION-CausesChemicals used in farming and industry

wash into the river. Chromium is a toxic chemical used in tanning leather.

Human and animal waste are also dumped into the water because sewage from the cities is not treated.

Cremated remains are also put into the Ganges.

Yangtze River Pollution-Causes

Nitrogen& phosphates from fertilizers increase the production of algae

PesticidesPhosphates contaminate the fish that people then eat

Industrial waste is dumped into rivers

Yangtze River Pollution - EffectsThe Algae uses oxygen that fish

need. This leads to the death of the fish.

People are getting sick from eating the fish.

There is an increase in the number of birth defects and cancer.

Trash floats on the river as a woman washes her clothes
