UPLIFTS THE SENSES. REVEALS THE SPIRIT.
OENOLOGIST
Francisco Gonçalves was born in Montalegre and it was in the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro that he began his dedication to the studies of the vine and wine and started the discovery of better techniques to express the unique notes of each grape variety.
Biotech engineer, oenologist and passionate about wines, he embraced throughout his path, major projects with reputed wines and that experience has allowed him to acquire a more mature and futuristic vision, which he takes on his present and future projects.
Douro, Trás-os-Montes, Vinhos Verdes and Dão are some of the regions where he seeks to highlight the characteristics of each wine he delicately creates.
e sagacity and respect for the grape varieties and their characteristics, as well as for the ancestral knowledge and modern technologies, guide him in the search for the expression of the best potential of each wine he develops.
roughout his career, he was responsible for the creation and development of numerous award-winning wines from the regions of Douro, Rias Bajas and Ribeira Del Douro. He has won prizes from the wine press, national and international competitions with more than 90 points, gold medals and special mentions.
REGION
Situated in the North of Portugal, the region of Trás-os-Montes reveals itself amidst hills and steep valleys in a wide extension. is is a unique region with special characteristics. Across the region the scenery changes rapidly, in the heart of lush green valleys, ancient hillsides covered by a patchwork of woods, green-grey olive groves, extensive green vineyards, or almond trees in blossom and other fruit trees.
e growing of vines and wine production in the region of Trás-os-Montes has a centuries-old origin, therefore inherently marked on its rocks, since throughout the region there are several lagares digged into the rocks of roman and pre-roman origin. e existence of old vineyards with centenarian grape variety also marks the acknowledged quality of this region's wines in a peculiar way.
Despite the specific characteristics, in the region of Trás-os-Montes there is a wide range of microclimates, which together with existing differences in the soil composition, usually granitic with patches of schist as well as a high adaptability of certain grape varieties, enable to obtain differentiated wines. Such differences allowed the definition of three sub-regions for the production of quality wines entitled to bear the designation of origin, DO,Trás-os-Montes. e criteria taken into account were essentially altitude, sun exposure, climate and soil composition, having the Designation of Origin (DO Trás-os-Montes) been recognised as of 9th November, 2006 (Ordinance nr 1204/2006)
CVRTM
In what comes to the typicality of wines from the region of Trás-os-Montes, apart from the existing diversity, some common features can be identified in all wines, the white wines have an aromatic balance with a high intensity of the fruit aromas and light florals, in the mouth they reveal a proper acidity, not excessively pronounced.
Regarding red wines, they have a high and consistent colour intensity, very fruity aroma, in the mouth they are full-bodied and despite the normally high alcohol levels, there is a fixed proper acidity making them robust but pleasant and very balanced wines.

WINES MONTALEGRE | AGEING
WINES MONTALEGRE | STAGE
Montalegre gathers, in a natural way, the ideal conditions for the ageing of mountain wines.
e levels of lower air pressure and lower concentrations of oxygen caused by the altitude, the mild climate and less peaks of temperature, favour the controlled evolution of the aromatic and taste characteristics throughout the ageing period.
is wine is produced from native grape variety from the region of Trás-os-Montes, from vineyards planted in poor soils predominantly granitic and with altitudes above 650 m.
Aerwards, it ages in a cellar in Montalegre due to its natural conditions for the ageing of wines, giving them freshness, balance and elegance.
It was from this perspective that I decided to have my wines ageing in Montalegre, my hometown, thus recognising the nurturing and dedication that all my fellow countrymen have given me throughout my life.
For all of that, the Mont'Alegre wines are also the perfect marriage between intensity and the flavour of the smokehouses of Barroso.
