Model United Nations

What is MUN• Model United Nations is a 3-day conference similar to the

United Nations in which students participate as delegates to various UN committees.

• Participants research and formulate political positions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent.

• The participants range from middle school students to graduate school students.

• Model United Nations involves researching, public speaking, debating, and writing, often along with critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills.

• The official and working language of the conference is English

The MUN gathering

History• The first instances of Model United Nations was the

Model League of Nations Assembly.• The first recorded meeting of a simulation of a Model League

of Nations was run by Harvard University in 1927.• In the 1980s, the United Nations Association of the United

States of America was established to coordinate and track the development of MUNs on a global level.

• The year 2012, there are about 400 MUN conferences worldwide.

• In Greece in the fifteen sessions held since 1998, over 2300 students have participated in MUN.

Committees • The committees usually consist of the six committees of

the General Assembly: • Social Humanitarian and Cultural Committee• Committee on Disarmament And International security• Special Political and Decolonisation Committee• Commission on Economic and social Development• Commission on Drugs and Crime• Commission on Sustainable Development• Finally there is the SECURITY COUNCIL which consists an

independent committee.

THE SELECTION OF THE Candidates• This year our school was chosen to participate in MUN as the

Republic of Korea!• For the selection of the ambassadors which will represent our

school in MUN a committee was set up.• This committee is consisted from mates who have been

ambassadors the previous years.• After a long procedure it was finally decided who will be the

ambassadors for this year.

• The European Union (EU) and South Korea are important trading partners, having negotiated a free trade agreement for many years since South Korea was designated as a priority FTA (Free Trade Agreements) partner in 2006.

• The free trade agreement was approved in September 2010, and took effect on July 1, 2011.

• South Korea is the EU's eighth largest trade partner, and the EU has become South Korea's second largest export destination.
