Minority Student Recruitment

The Basics

AAUM’s Minority Student Recruitment Initiative (MSRI)

• Started in 2007 in response to Prop 2– Statewide ban on race-and-gender based

affirmative action use in public institutions– Fear that U-M would appear unfriendly or

unwelcoming to minority applicants

• MSRI was created to fill the gap that Prop 2 could potentially create

• Designed to ensure that qualified admitted students were choosing to attend U-M

MSRI, cont.

• Started with approximately 80 alumni• MSRI volunteers were from all over the US• Underrepresented Minority alumni

– African American, Hispanic, Native American

• First “Called to Action” in March of 2007• MSRI eventually became known as Each

One, Reach One in 2008

Each One, Reach One

• Also known as EOROs• Called to action in 2007 through 2014• The EORO activity became an official part

of the Alumni Student Recruitment Program in 2008

• EOROs receive communications and information from the ASR Program

EORO Matching

• Occurs in the winter/spring • Matching is done after large groups of

admits are made so there is a full roster to work with

• When possible, matching is done by:1. Ethnicity

2. High school attended by alum & student

3. City alum & student live in

Volunteer Expectations and Responsibilities

• Keep your contact information up-to-date– Especially your email address!

• Contact your students in a timely manner, within 5-7 days of receiving your “call to action”

• Understand that student contact information is self-reported and is the only information available

Alumni Recruitment Efforts

• Every contact you make is important and appreciated

• After September, you can “track” whether your students enrolled by checking the U-M on-line directory

• Since there are many reasons why a student may choose to go elsewhere, there is no “report card” created by the ASR program, nor are volunteers “graded”

Contacting Students

• Before you call:– Review resources so you know they exist!– Reflect on the things that made your time at

U-M special & be prepared to share that

• Call at a time when the student will more likely be available– After school, early evenings, Saturdays,

Sundays after worship services

• During your call:– Try to create a two-way conversation– Share what you loved about your U-M days– Avoid “yes” or “no” questions– (brief) Silence is okay!– Leave your name/number for later follow-up– Feel free to talk to parents/guardians, if

student is unavailable
