Site Plan

This project was completed in an interdisciplinary studio with both architecture

and graphic design students. Northside, Cincinnati has an old car dealership that has sat vacant for a few

years. Our job was to redevelop the space into a food co-op. This co-op has an art gallery, marketplace, commercial and

community kitchens, a restaurant, cooking classrooms, and a greenhouse.

The major focus of the design came from community integration. We put plans in place for farmers to contribute to the co-op

only if they live within a 150-mile radius of the building. The same went for delivery services. Cooking classes and gallery events encourage community

members to interact and engage within the space. The architecture team decided to keep materials humble and simple, so we wrapped together wood, concrete, and the building’s existing brick. The studio was an amazing way to get exposure into two new worlds for me-Graphic Design, and food production. I learned a great deal from my graphic design colleagues, and they learned much from the arcitecture students as well.

Clifton Public Library

The Clifton neighborhood of Cincinnati has a small library on a street corner. It was my job to update this library to allow for more books, media, and people. It for this project that i began addressing issues of sustainability both from technological and community standpoints. My primary design focus was a convergence of “old” and “new” by incorporating a double skin facade around a brick skin composed of salvaged bricks from the previous library. Although the program called for a taller, bigger building, i wanted to stick to some of the area’s traditional materials.

This project was a particularly interesting one. Our studio was tasked with designing a set of modern zeppelins or rigid airships. My partner, Blaze Burke, and i began our design by creating a client. His name is J.R. Ashcroft and is a former oil tycoon-turned environmentalist. He wants to use his wealth earned in the oil industry to begin a life not only “off the grid,” but “off the planet” entirely. His zeppelin design incorporates technologies and systems that allow the zeppelin to never need to touch down again. A greenhouse with aquaponics system, rain collection, wind turbines, and solar panels keep the zeppelin powered and survivable. Added to these systems are electric helicopters that allow Ashcroft to “shop locally” anywhere in the world. He can buy coffee from colombia, sausage from germany, and wine from california. This sustainable mansion in the sky allows Ashcroft to change his wasteful ways and live green.

The center of the zeppelin includes the two-story greenhouse with running track, aquaponics system (and aquarium), water treatment room, and kitchen. The top two electric motors are accessible for maintenance from the top floor of the greenhouse.

Chicago-Hancock Zeppelin DockParasite High-Rise Port, 2012

Having finished the personal zeppelin design, it was now my task to create a docking system for the ship. I created an architectural parasite that attaches itself to the top thirty floors of the John Hancock Center in Chicago. I began my design by experimenting with different techniques of folding. The structural grid system of the Hancock building lends itself to be folded out from within. The folded volumes took the form of the inverse of the front of the ship, so that the zeppelin could dock precisely inside. To create a parasite that truly stood out on the skyline as a different piece of architecture, I used a white plastic outer shell lit from the inside with colored light. Because this parasite is for docking small personal “yacht” zeppelins, I added a second port. Eastbound and Westbound zeppelins can land and depart seamlessly with the multi-directional ports.
