Making Web2.0 Work @ Work

Stephen M. Jordanstephenmjordan@gmail.com

Who am I? Why am I here?

To Friends and Family:Stephen Jordan: Boston native, San Diego resident, loyal friend

and raging “Californiaphile”

At Work:Steve Jordan: innovation and collaboration technologist in Fortune 50, IT manager, open

source proponent, web2.0 evangelist

On the Web:“Junkfish Jordan”: adventure

junkie, blogger, fisherman, naturalist and video podcaster

extraordinaire

Why three personas? Because effectively using social media inside the workplace requires understanding how, when, and why it is used outside!

First, let’s make sure we’re

on the same page.

Accept it! The world is changed.

But don’t take their word for it….

Everyone is an author, producer, photographer, buyer, seller, gambler, gamer, critic, party planner, innovator, and reporter. There are NO barriers to entry!

“All I ever needed to know I

learned found in Kindergarten on the

internet”

Knowing how to find information in today’s world is perhaps more important than actually knowing it.

What do we need to know?

In A Study in Scarlet, Sherlock Holmes claims he does not know that the Earth revolves around the sun, as such information is irrelevant to his work. Directly after having heard that fact from Watson, he says he will immediately try to forget it. He says he believes that the mind has a finite capacity for information storage, and so learning useless things would merely reduce his ability to learn

useful things.

In the workforce, what we need to know and need to seek varies by individual. Having the right blend of expertise is key for any enterprise!

Are ongoing debates a thing

of the past?

In today’s climate, knowing how

to find information

can be more important than actually

knowing it

Knowledge is a valuable asset of an employee, while web2.0 fluency is a valuable skill.

People are willing to give knowing

they’ll* get in the end.

*Individual or society

“This would never fly at

my company!”

“People will waste their time”

“I need to see an ROI on it”

“It is too risky to try”

“We don’t need it”

“What is the ROI on

email?”

You have to get beyond the hype and manage expectations.

“OK, I get it, eyes wide open,

now…”
