There are two major categories of plant

Nonvascular plants

Nonvascular plants can only move water and nutrients from one cell to the next.

Vascular plantshave a system of tubes or vessels that carry

water and nutrients around then plant.

This tube system allows vascular plants to grow much larger.

Most plants we see are vascular plants.

Animals have one system of tubes to carry nutrients to all the cells.

This is called the

circulatory system.

Vascular plants have two separate systems of tubes.

Xylem are the tubes that carry water up the stem from the roots to the leaves.

Phloem carries food made in the leaves to all parts of the plant.

Xylem (zie lem) are the tubes that carry water up the stem from the roots to the leaves.

Phloem (flo em) carries the food made in the leaves to all parts of the plant.

Plants are producers. They make food.Only plants can make food.

Plants make food in their leaves.

A green material in the leaves called

chlorophyll (clor ah fil)

turns light energy from the sun into

chemical energy (sugar).

Plants can’t grow without this energy.

Animals can’t live without this energy.

Plants must have three things in order to make food.

When plants make food they release oxygen as a waste gas.

CO2 (carbon dioxide)is a gas that makes up about 1% of earth’s atmosphere.

Animals release CO2 into the air as a waste product when they breathe.

Plants take in CO2 and use it as they make sugar (chemical energy).
