Form:1. +ve sentence

• subject + past BE verb + verb+-ingI was playing.They were waiting.

2. -ve sentence• subject +past BE verb + not + verb+-ing

3. yes/no question / information question• past BE verb + subject + verb+-ing

Were you singing?

• (question word) + past BE verb + subject + verb+-ing

What were you singing?

used with the simple past tense to talk about an action in progress which is interrupted by another past action
