• Small Talk is for getting people relaxed before a conversation

• In America small talk is a part of everyday life• You’ll have small talk with everyone, especially

about the weather!

Ask and Remember

• Half the class has Worksheet A, Half have Worksheet B. I will model the activity first.

• People with Worksheet A ask the questions to the Worksheet B. Remember their answers and do not write anything down.

• When finished Worksheet A repeats back Worksheet B’s answers in the form of: “You’re birthday is….”, “You cannot …..” “You….”

• Switch roles and now its Worksheet B’s turn to ask questions Worksheet A, and then repeat back their answers.

Open Ended vs. Leading Questions

• Open Ended = Without fixed limits, free

• Leading Questions = Encourages a desired answer

Do vs. Does

• To make a question in English we often use “do” or “don’t” at the beginning of a sentence

• We use Do when the subject is I, you, we or they.

• When the subject is he, she or it, we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative sentence a question.

Examples

• Does it hurt? -Pronoun “it” as in the hurt….so we use does.

• Do you feel pain?-Pronoun “you”…..so we use do.

Other Ways of Writing Open Ended Questions:

• Can Verb. To be able too. Often used when making a request. “Can you tell me if it hurts?”

• Have youOpen ended guess. Unsure. “Have you ever tried a diet?”

• As medical practitioners you will have to understand people’s schedules

• Days of the Week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

• And then hours

Hour Divisions in the day

• Day Time - Between sunrise and sunset

• Evening – Day starts to turn into night. After 6PM

How to ask people about schedules?

Answering Questions

How role play should work, example: A: What do you do Thursday?B: Thursday I play football. And Thursdays evening I clean my clock.• Please walk around and ask others about

their schedule
