Lacamas is: Respectful, Responsible, Safe and Kind!
Dear Lacamas Families, December 2018
Winter coats, rosy cheeks, crisp cold air…it is hard to believe it is December! Besides the change in the weather, the month of December brings events and celebrations for our Lacamas community.
As we planned for this year, we desired to provide our kids with unique opportunities to serve and support our Lacamas community and beyond. Our PBIS Team worked to create and plan three Character Challenges for kids throughout the year. Each challenge focuses on one of our Character Traits for three different months: December is Compassion-Stuff the Bus Collection; February is Kindness-Kindness Month; April is Curiosity-Acts of Service. During our planning we learned something fun, a group of leopards is called a LEAP! We loved this and thought to build our sense of community, why don’t we create cross-grade level groups of leopards, identify each group by a letter to spell out LEAP and have them represent a character trait. Our LEAPs: L stands for Loyal; E signals Encouraging; A demonstrates Accepting; P empowers Positivity.
The month of December is our first LEAP Family Challenge! We are showing our Compassion and Caring through their collective efforts for our “Stuff the Bus” food drive. LEAP Families have been busily collecting non-perishable food items to support our Camas/Washougal families and this is our last week! Friday, December 7th we will reveal the LEAP that collected the largest amount of items. The reward… our winning LEAP has the privilege of actually Stuffing the Bus! We are excited to provide authentic acts of service for our kids that support and demonstrate positive character. Thank you families for supporting your child, our school and Camas community!
December also marks the end of our first trimester and reporting period. Report Cards will be sent home in your child’s backpack December 13th. The report card indicators describe the skills and concepts identified for student mastery by the end of the school year. Our reporting system of 1, 2, 3, and 4 identifies your child’s progress toward meeting grade level standards. Monitoring your child’s skill development, supporting good study habits, and encouraging responsible learning behaviors are positive ways you can help. This is an important time of year to reflect on your child’s progress and celebrate their successes. Take time to share with your child their growth and set goals for the next trimester. We are proud of our Lacamas Leopards and excited to see their continued growth!
December is one of my favorite months…time for sharing, celebrating, and giving. This is a busy and exciting season with lots to look forward to: “Stuff the Bus”, Lacamas Kids’ Choir singing at “Hometown Holiday” December 7th, Report Cards December 13th, and our “All School Sing-a-long” December 21st. We look forward to sharing these events and activities with our students, families and Lacamas community.
Best Wishes this Winter Season!
