Dear _________________ , In case you haven’t heard, Dr. Bradford Kinney, Professor of Communication Studies at Wilkes University, will retire at the end of this semester. Dr. Kinney has added to the richness of so many lives of his current and past students at Wilkes. Now, it’s time to honor him for his dedicated teaching and coaching for the past 40 years. Dr. Kinney speci[ically wanted his “Kinney’s Kids” included in a special celebration. So, on Saturday, December 8th from 7-‐10 P.M., we will be holding the Dr. Kinney “Roast and Toast” in the second [loor Ballroom of the Henry Student Center at Wilkes University. Zebra Communications, the student-‐run PR agency at Wilkes, would like to invite you to join us in honoring Dr. Kinney. Do you have a personal message or funny moment to share about Dr. Kinney? We would like to hear them! Consider participating in the “Roast” portion of the December 8th party or consider placing an ad in the Dr. Kinney Celebration Program that will be available the night of the dinner on December 8th. We are hoping to host the “Roast and Toast” dinner at no cost to our guests. We are expecting a large turnout for this fun night and hope to provide a buffet dinner. To help cover the cost of the dinner, we have two ideas that could make this an especially special night for a man we all admire. You can purchase an ad in the program and the money raised will cover expenses for dinner, with any additional going to the Department of Communication’s Friends and Alumni Scholarship Fund in Dr. Kinney’s name. To buy a quarter page ad will cost $25; half page will be $50. And, to purchase a full page, $100 will allow you to share a Kinney story, picture or to wish him well. The Alumni Of[ice has created the “Dr. Kinney Roast and Toast” page on line to allow you to make reservations for the dinner or purchase an ad in the program. At the dinner, we are “charging” $1.00 per minute for the honor of roasting Dr. Kinney. Again, all funds cover the dinner and go to the Scholarship Fund. We know Dr. Kinney would love to see you on December 8th. Please contact Zebra Communications at 570-‐408-‐4158 or email brittany.battista@wilkes.edu for information. We are hoping to have reservations set by December 1st. We look forward to seeing “Kinney’s Kids” at our event!
Sincerely,
The Zebra Communications Team 5

Speech! Welcome everyone! My name is Brittany Battista and along with Dr. Jane Elmes-‐Crahall, will be
your emcee for tonight’s Roast and Toast of Dr. Kinney. So, let’s start with the fun stuff. Dr. Kinney has been my academic advisor for the past three years and in that time he’s gotten to know me pretty well. I’d say too well sometimes. He’s been a huge support as a professor and is there congratulating me with each accomplishment. He’s been the enforcer whenever I try to snack during class which I like to do frequently. He’s also been a father [igure with my seemingly endless troubles with guys. Sometimes I like my boyfriend, sometimes I don’t and sometimes I just hate all men and Dr. Kinney loves to tease me about it. For the record, I don’t mind men today. The [irst person speaking today is a guy that I don’t mind at all. In fact we’re partners in crime when it comes to trying to get Dr. Kinney to laugh during class, whenever the situation blatantly calls out for it. Up [irst is Trevor Kurtz.
Like I mentioned before, Dr. Kinney is my academic advisor. When we would schedule our classes each of his advisees had about 20 minutes with him. If you know anything about Dr. Kinney is that 20 minutes in “Kinney time” is actually an hour and a half. Here is someone who has spent much of her time with Dr. Kinney, Donna Sedor, one of the “Kinney’s Kids” that graduated in 1985.
Dr. Kinney has such an interesting sense of humor. He’s always making jokes during class. There is always one person that laughs at Dr. Kinney’s jokes, and it’s himself…because frankly we don’t [ind them funny. Next is someone you will all [ind funny, graduate of 1993 and comedian Teri Granahan.
If you know anything about Dr. Kinney it’s that he is very animated when he talks. This animation carries over to when he’s teaching and he even stood on a chair a few weeks ago to give the black power sign in presidential rhetoric. I have a photo to prove it if I ever need blackmail. He can get so animated that after he retires as a professor he’s going to be an air traf[ic controller. Up next is someone who knows Dr. Kinney’s enthusiasm very well, along with Donna, was one of the most successful competitors on the Wilkes forensics team, Dr. Al Mueller.
*We will now have an open roast for anyone who would like to additionally roast Dr. Kinney.* Dr. Kinney likes to tell stories. He likes to tell them so much that he tells the same ones over and
over again from “back in the covered wagon age,” because he’s “as old as Methuselah.” Each time I hear of the same story over and over again, but each time I listen like it’s the [irst. Many of these stories are of him and his longtime colleague, Dr. Jane Elmes-‐Crahall. These partners in crime have been working together for about 30 years now that Dr. Kinney is retiring, and now that Jane [inally gave him permission to. Here is Dr. Jane Elmes-‐Crahall.
Dr. Kinney, I could stand up here and roast you all I want, but the truth of the matter is that during the past three years you’ve been more to my than a professor. You’ve been an amazing mentor who can steer me in the right direction, a father [igure who gives the best advice, and a friend who looks out for me even when I don’t know it. You’ve been the enforcer whenever I try to snack during class, which I like to do frequently. You have been a huge support as a professor and are congratulating me with every accomplishment. Without your teaching I would not be able to stand here today and give my speech. So I just want to say thank you for being the person you are, because you’ve done so much to make me who I am today.

Post Analysis! In terms of advertisement, we should have better prepared our of[ice supply
capabilities for the event, which include securing the correct letter and paper for mailing donation letters. In hindsight, we focused too much on attempting to purchase return envelopes, when actually Alumni Relations has self addressed return envelopes we could have utilized that would have [it in the mailing envelopes. We should have also constructed response cards to send out, but due to some technical dif[iculties and inability to open the corrupt [ile on computers, the decision was made to send the envelopes out without response cards, because we wanted the invitation and solicitation sent out before Thanksgiving.
Speaking to [iscal matters, we did an excellent job in raising the [inal revenue. The original pre event revenue from pre-‐event donations and ads was only $1,309.00, where the expected expense was approximately $1,800.00. The [inal expense was only $1,616.50, when the [inal alcohol cost was factored in. After the solicitation for the donations on site, the [inal total revenue based on all donations and ad buys was $2,059.75. The total monies going into the scholarship fund, without factoring in funding from Zebra Communications, totals $443.25. The total including Zebra funding was over $2,000.
The alcohol at the event was open bar. The was the unfortunate result of attempting to meet the university alcohol policy standards. There can not be cash bars at campus events, one can not sell differential tickets, and one can not sell alcohol tickets. For future events of similar nature, alumni or people in general will have to be charged for their ticket, which would cover the cost of the bar. Students or others can obviously be let in. The organization sponsoring the event should buy green wristbands with drink tickets, similar to alumni functions, which is an acceptable protocol for alcohol policy at university events. Wristbands would limit alcohol to alumni. It
On a positive note, we were successful in allowing everyone to enjoy an event which Dr. Kinney appreciated and had a good time at. The roasting was funny and successful, as well as the money donated to the scholarship fund. The Facebook advertising was also a successful way to advertise to alumni and students.
