FOREWORDKathakisoneoftheeightformsofIndianclassicaldances,originatingfromnorthernIndia.Itisanartofstory-telling,formedthroughmusic,text,andvocals.Kathakisdistinctivebecauseitisrichlydevelopedbyrhythminterplay,improvisationandimagination.ThisnorthIndiandanceformhasthestylisticqualitiesoftheMoghulcourtswhereitgainedinfluencefrombothHinduandMuslimculturalsensibilities.Kathakexploresthenaturalalignmentofthebodywiththedynamicsofgeometry,non-verbalcommunication,subtletiesofexpressionandplayfulrhythmbetweenfootworkandpercussion.TheISTDsyllabusisdesignedtoreflectholisticclassicaldancetrainingwhileconsideringtheneedsandexperiencesofpresent-daystudentsworldwide.StudentsofclassicalIndiandance,otherthanthoseinIndia,areinanenvironmentthatmaynotnecessarilycomplementtheirexperienceofKathaktraining.Thissyllabus,therefore,isbasedontheinvestingoftimeandeffortintheearlyGrades,tocreatethenecessaryphysicalandculturalinfrastructureforthedancerintraining.Thesyllabusalsoaccommodatessomechangesinthetraditionallearningprogressionofdancematerial.Itpromotesholisticdanceexperienceattheinitialstages,evenbeforeeachaspectofthephysicaltraininghasbeenmastered.Studentsarealsoencouragedtoseedanceperformancesinordertogainaculturalandcriticalunderstanding,andalivelyinterestinKathakandinthewiderhorizonsofdance.TheISTDsyllabusprovidesastructureequallysuitedtostudentsofanyofthedifferentgharānāsofKathak,withoutfavouringoneoveranother.Thesyllabusforeachexaminationispresentedinthreesections:

INTRODUCTIONRATIONALEThissyllabusiscommonforKathakandBharatanatyam,inpreparingchildrenfortheGradedExaminationsofeithergenre. Itmayequallybe taughtby teachersofeithergenre,using themovementvocabularywhich isfamiliar andwhichwould be of use in later learning. TherearenomarksforgroomingforthePrimaryExamination;itisconsideredanessentialaspectoftraining,givingpoiseandconfidence.Thefollowingareexpected:

ASSESSMENTTheexaminationtakesplaceinthepresenceoftheteacher.

• Normallythreetofourcandidatesareexaminedsimultaneously.• Thefirstpartoftheexaminationisconductedbytheteacher,leadingapre-rehearseddanceorwarm- upsequence, for5minutes,coveringallaspectsof thesyllabus.Thispartdemonstratescandidates’ abilitytofollowinstructions.• Thesecondpartisaprepareddanceperformanceofaround3-4minutes.Thiscanbeasequenceof dancemovements,whichneednotbegenrespecific.• Thefinalpartistheexaminerrequestingmaterialfromthesyllabusindividuallyfromeachcandidate.

METHODOFASSESSMENTThePrimaryClassExaminationisassessedexternallybyvisitingexaminersrecruitedandtrainedbytheISTD.Thetitlesofthecomponentsandthemarksattainablearedetailedabove.Theoverallmarkisgivenoutof100andtheoverallresultisindicatedasfollows:Grade Marks

Merit 60-79marks

Pass 40-59marks

NotAttained 0-39marks

ASSESSMENTGUIDANCECandidatesareassessedontheirabilitytoshow:

• Technicalaccuracywithcorrectplacementtothebestoftheirphysicalfacility.• Appropriateuseoflimbsshowinganunderstandingofthepurposeorsignificanceofeachmovement orsequenceofmovements.• Asenseoflineandwellcoordinatedmovements.• Anassuredperformanceshowingthedifferentqualitiesofmovementrequiredbyeachsectionofthe examinationstructure.• Musicalityandrhythmicawareness.

KATHAKGRADEDEXAMINATIONS:GRADE1-6 INTRODUCTION RATIONALEKathakmakesadistinctivecontributiontotheeducationofallstudents,inthatitusesmovement,whichisoneofthefundamentalmodesofhumanexpression.Itoffersarangeoflearningopportunitiesandenablesparticipantstoenjoyphysicalexpression,aswellas,developintellectualsensibilities.AstheyworktogetherinKathak,candidateslearnaboutco-operationanddevelopanunderstandingoftheshapingofmovementintoartisticformsofexpression.GradedExaminationsinKathakareconcernedwithprogressivemasteryindefinedstageswithinthecontextofsafedancepractice.AIMSTheaimofGradedExaminationsistoprovideanassessmentschemefordance,whichgivesthebasisforthemeasurementoftheindividualcandidate'sprogressanddevelopment,whetherthecandidateispursuingdanceasaleisureactivityoraspreparationforaprofessionalcareerasadanceteacherorperformer.Therearesixpracticalexaminationgrades,numberedfrom1to6,inordertoindicatetheincreasingorderofdifficulty(6representsthehighestlevelofattainment).OBJECTIVESTheobjectivesoftheKathakGradedExaminationsyllabusaresetoutbelow:

• ToimpartpracticalskillsinKathakasitismanifesttodayinitstraditionalform,complementedby appropriatebackgroundknowledgeandunderstandingoftheart,throughaprogrammeoftraining andassessment.• Tolayaholisticfoundationeitherasanelementinaliberaleducationorasapreparationfor vocationaltraininginKathakorotherdance-basedcareers,integratingthemajoraspectsoftheart form,includingthemovementvocabulary,theexperienceofperformanceandanunderstandingof therelevantmusicandliterature.• TodevelopanawarenessandappreciationofKathakinthecontextofawiderdanceworld.

LEARNINGANDPROGRESSIONCandidatesdeveloptheskillandunderstandingofKathak,atthesametimeasbuildingasoundtechnique,bydevelopingthephysicalabilitytocommunicatethroughmovementinanexpressiveandartisticway.Aclearlydefinedstructureallowslearningtotakeplaceinthecontextofsafedancepractice.TheGradedExaminationsbuildupprogressively,ensuringthatstepsandskillslearnedatlowerlevelsprepareformorecomplexmovementsasthecandidateprogresses.

EachKathakGradedExaminationallowscandidatestoprogresstothenexthighergradeintheKathakgenre.Also,arangeoftransferstootherdancegenresbecomespossibleasthecandidatedevelopsphysicallyandlearnscommonskillssuchasrunning,gesture,posture,timingandrhythmicawareness.Inthisway,withadditionalteachinginput,thecandidateisabletodevelopabroadbaseofdancingskills.FollowingonfromtheGradedExaminations,candidatesmaywishtoprogresstotheVocationalGradedExaminationsaspreparationforemploymentasaprofessionaldanceroraspreparationfordanceteachingqualifications.TheGradedExaminationsinKathakalsoallowforthoseparticipatingsolelyforrecreationalpurposestoproducequalityworkinasafedancecontext.ENTRYCONDITIONSANDGENERALINFORMATION AGELIMITSThereisnoupperorloweragelimitforenteringtheKathakGradedExaminations.Itisrecommended,however,thatteachersensurethatcandidatesareatanappropriatelevelofmaturitytomeetandenjoythedemandsofthesyllabus.Itisrecommendedthatchildrenandadultsarenotenteredatthesametime.PRIORLEARNINGTheGradedExaminationsinKathakareintendedtobetakenconsecutivelyandmostcandidateswillwishtoprogressthroughtheminsequenceinordertodevelopanddemonstratetherequisiteskills.However,incaseswhereexaminationsareundertakenwithoutsuccessatthepreviousgrade,thecandidateneedstobeatanappropriatelevelofphysicalandartisticdevelopment.BeforeacandidateenrolsinaclassleadingtoaGradedExamination,teachersareunderaparticularduty,therefore,toassesstheachievementofthecandidate,particularlywithregardtosafedancepractice.GENDERDISTINCTIONSTheexaminationdoesnotrequirethedancertomakeagenderspecificpresentation.Malesandfemalescanbepresentedtogether.TIMEALLOWANCES/NUMBEROFCANDIDATESCandidatesarenormallyexaminedingroupsofthree.Wherethisisnotpossible,candidatesshouldbeenteredinpairs.Inexceptionalcircumstances,asinglecandidatecanbeentered,forexampleiftheteacherisnotenteringanyotherGrade1candidateswhohavelearntthesameprepareddancesequence.ForGrades1-6thethreecandidatesshowaprepareddancesequencesimultaneously,followingwhichtheyeachinturnanswerquestionsabouttheprepareddancesequencetheyhaveshown,aboutotherelementsofthesyllabus,andtheymaybeaskedtodancetodemonstratetheirunderstanding.Theexaminationofeachcandidatetakesthefollowingtotaltime:

REASONABLEADJUSTMENTSTheISTDpolicyandprocedureforallreasonableadjustmentsforallqualificationsiscontainedwithintheEqualOpportunitiespolicyontheISTDwebsite.TheVocationalGradedExaminationsaredesignedforthosewhoareintendingtopursueacareerindance,eitherasaperformerorasateacher.Itis,therefore,veryunlikelythatapotentialperformerwillrequirereasonableadjustments.However,apotentialteachermustbeabletodemonstrateallmovementsprecisely,inordertoteachthemeffectively.Asthe‘Intermediate’examinationisalsonowincludedasaunitwithintheDiplomainDanceInstruction,itislikelysomecandidateswillapplyforadjustments.Thisisbecausetheyare:

• Thosecandidateswhoarepossiblyalreadyteachingandwhodonothavethestaminaormuscular strengththatisnormallyrequiredatthislevel,anditwouldbedeemedtobeunsafetorequirethem toperformusingthesamedegreeofstrengthandstaminaasayoungerdancer.• Candidateswhodonothavesufficientphysicalfacilitytoperformthemovementsatspeedtothe requiredstandard,butwhocanneverthelessdemonstratethemataslowerpace.• Candidateswho,throughtheirphysicalmakeup,wouldbecausinginjurytothemselves,egverystiff feet.

ThesamecriteriaapplytocandidatesatAdvanced1and2level.SuchcandidatesmustapplytotheCustomerServicesandQualityAssuranceDepartment,usingtheApplicationforReasonableAdjustmentsform,atleastthreeweekspriortotheexaminationentry,givingdetailedreasonsfortherequest.ThiswillbeprocessedgivingtheFacultyopportunitytorefusespecialconditions,recommendadditionalexaminationtime,orgivefurtherdetailedguidance.Inprinciple,theexaminationmustnotbeweightedtogiveanadvantagetoeitherthecandidatewithreasonableadjustmentsortheablebodiedcandidate.Thedemandsonbothmustbeequal.Reasonableadjustmentswillbegenerallygrantedforcertainspecificsectionsoftheexamination,andcandidatesshouldindicatewhichofthesectionsmightbeaffected.Candidatesshouldattemptallmovementsandthroughout,mustdancetothebestoftheirownphysicalability.Intheinterestsofsafetyandtofacilitateaccuracyofmovement,somecandidatesmayindicatetheirowntempoandmaytakeextrapausesforbreathasnecessary.Ifrequired,questionsmaybeasked,andthesewillbephrasedinsuchawayastoclarifytheknowledgeofthemechanicsofthemovement.Questioningisnotpermittedforeverysectionoftheexaminationandwouldnormallybeusedinamaximumoftwosections.

RESULTSANDCERTIFICATIONAllISTDexaminationsaresingleperformanceatonemomentintime,withadetailedmarkingsystemawardedaccordingtotheassessmentcriteriaandattainmentdescriptorsgivenforeachexamination.Examinersreturntheresultsandreportsheetsassoonaspossibleaftertheexamination.ThereportsheetsforeachcandidateareindividuallycheckedwithintheQualityAssurancedepartmentforadministrativeaccuracy.UndernormalcircumstancesthereportsheetsforUKexaminationswillbeissuedtotheteacherwithin21workingdaysoftheexamination.Anyerrorsfoundarecorrectedbytheexaminerpriortofurtherprocessingofthewholeexaminationsession,andmaythereforeextendthesetimings,althoughthedepartmentwillmakeeveryefforttoprocesstheseasrapidlyaspossible.AllresultsareenteredbySections,andcheckedforachievingtheminimumpasslevels,perSectionandintotal,andcorrectlevelsofattainmentagainstthetotalmarkachieved.Resultsarethenclearedforcertificateissue,whichisundertakenbytheCustomerServicesandQualityAssurancedepartment,andshouldbewithin6to8weeksoftheexamination.Copiesofallreportsheetsandresultsareheldonarchiveforreferenceasnecessary.

ISTDGradedandVocationalGradedExaminations,theDiplomainDanceInstruction,DiplomainDanceEducationandDiplomainDancePedagogyareregulatedbyOfqualinEngland;QualificationsWalesinWales;andtheCouncilfortheCurriculumExaminationsandAssessment(CCEA)inNorthernIreland.

TheRegulatedQualificationsFramework(RQF)providesasingle,simplesystemforcataloguingallregulatedqualifications,indicatingqualificationsbytheirlevel(degreeofdifficulty)andsize(amountorbreadthoflearning).Sizeisindicatedbyacreditvalue,correspondingtoatermusedinthetitle.AnAwardisworth1-12credits,aCertificateisworth13-36credits,andaDiplomaisworth37ormorecredits.Onecreditcorrespondsto10hoursoflearningforthetypicallearner,whichisdividedintoGuidedLearninghours(GLH),whichisbroadlycontacttimewiththeteacher,andpersonalstudytime,whichtogethermakeTotalQualificationTime(TQT).TheISTD’squalificationsontheRegulatedQualificationsFrameworkareasfollows:
