First Anniversary for
St. Andrew's Choir
The photograph shows members of the
Choir at the World War One Memorial
service held on Sunday, 10th. August. The Choir has been singing regularly in
church and members have progressed
into an established and accomplished
group. Singing not just hymns but a
variety of songs and anthems. The music
creates an uplifting atmosphere for wor-
ship both to the congregation and to the
choir.
We are always ready to welcome new
members, if you would like more infor-
mation contact Carol Sharpe on 728227.
IS IT WIE OR WATER
Once again we are appealing to your generosity for donations of full bottles of wine
for this stall. Last year was a great success and we hope for even better this year.
We can either collect, phone 728848 or you can drop off at Adam Cottage, 5 little
London lane.
Many thanks

Wow – Thank you very much to all who
supported the Strawberry Tea at Wretton on
Sunday 20th July. What a Wonderful rain-

£250 for the All Saints Restoration Fund!
Very Special Thanks to Helaine for arrang-
ing it all, setting up, baking and hosting.
We were very unlucky with the weather for
the Whittington Riverside event this year,
but everyone appeared to have the British
Bulldog spirit and enjoyed themselves
despite the rain! On the day we made
£1158.30 plus our very generous sponsor-
ships from Morgan Engineering and Big K.
Many thanks to them, everyone who helped
in any way or made donations and also to all
the folk who came along and supported us.
We have a prize for Carl Weeds but no

orthwold Parish Council –
Jubilee Benches Vandalism Dear residents it has become apparent
that vandalism in the village is once
again an issue. The Parish Council are
sad to report that the Oak benches which
were installed recently to celebrate the
Queens Jubilee have been vandalised.
The bench located on Methwold Road
has had graffiti carved into the wood
and is therefore going to be quite diffi-
cult and costly to repair. We would like to remind those responsi-
ble for the vandalism that the village and
its assets are to be used and enjoyed by
all residents and that your actions are
not only unacceptable but that they are
also ruining the look and feel of our
beautiful Village. The Council is fully
aware that most of our residents take
pride in their village and homes and we
urge anyone who has information on the
individuals causing the vandalism, to
report it to the local police on 101.

Sharon and Laura Mosedale would like
to thank everyone for their condolences
and cards on the recent death of John,
they were very much appreciated. Many thanks to Cheryl and Dave for
their hospitality at The Crown Inn after-
wards, and our thanks also to Philip
Bowers for his care and kindness.
MR AD MRS BOOTY
Jim and Barbara would like to thank every-
one who came to their recent party to cele-
brate Jim's contribution to the Village over
the many years he has been on several and
various Committees. We had a lovely
lunch and afternoon and it was really good
to see all those people who came along to
the Village Hall to pass on their good
wishes to us. Thank you for all your cards
and gifts, and to Mr Parfitt for his photogra-
phy work. Thank you also to the various people who
helped organise the lunch and afternoon
and to all those who provided and prepared
the food. We really enjoyed ourselves. Barbara would also like to thank all the
people who have helped her and Jim since
he was taken ill and spent time in hospital,
and then upon his return home. Everyone
has been so kind and the help we have re-
ceived has really been invaluable and we
both appreciate it very much. Thank you
everyone.

organised day where the children competed
like the Olympians of 2012 and entertained
parents and friends alike. The weather was
great; we were very grateful to those who
erected and dismantled the marquee which
provided well needed shade to the children;
and meant everyone could relax and focus on
the event rather than worrying about the
weather. The Year 6 children, with help from Year 5,
put on a fabulous end of year show called
'The Lemonade Kid'. This proved to be a
great spectacle with the children looking
great, singing beautifully and acting their
socks off. It was funny, poignant and an ex-
cellent way to show just how far the children
have developed in their confidence and abil-
ity to be 'drama queens'. It always brings a
tear to the eye when we get to the end of
these productions because just as the children
start to appreciate their time at primary
school they leave us. A highlight of the per-
formance was the apparent spontaneous
throwing of water over One-eyed Jack
(Charlie Cater) by The Lemonade Kid (Jack
Hales) a beautifully funny moment. There has been much in the press this year
about state schools not providing a 'good'
standard of music teaching. I believe one of
the outstanding things we do at The Norman
is give 'outstanding' opportunities to our chil-
dren to learn musical instruments and to per-
form. This was demonstrated at our Musical
Extravaganza where the children performed
for parents and friends of The Norman. We
had guitarists showing their skills, which they

SCHOOL
The school is quiet now with only the echoes
of the children from the last year and what a
busy year we had and a very successful one.
Our Year 6 children did extremely well in
their SAT assessments and each can be very
proud of themselves. It shows what good
teaching and inspired learners can do; some-
thing all the children deserve and can expect
at The Norman. Our conversion to an acad-
emy happened on the 1st July in a quiet man-
ner, partly because we were so delayed it was
hard to believe it had really happened. The
main impact is in the infrastructure of the
school with our management systems chang-
ing. However, we have already had good
support form the DEMAT (Diocese of Ely
Multi-Academy Trust) and are getting to
know a new set of schools with whom we
will work in the coming years. Our celebra-
tions will occur on Tuesday 7th October when
we will have the new Archdeacon, Rev. Dr.
Alex Hughes come to bless the school in it's
new status, along with Langley Lodge which
will be officially opened by Mr. Langley as
well as the Memorial Bed. We are planning a
day of celebration and hope that our commu-
nity friends will come and join us. Check our
website or call the school for further details. Our term ended with a variety of thoroughly
enjoyable events. We started with Sports
Day, which proved to be an extremely well

are developing in their own time at an after
school club. The Year 3 and 4 children
wowed the audience with their string per-
formance comprising violin, viola and cello
with the addition of song and kazoo. It was a
magnificent performance and showed why
they did so well at their concert at King's
Lynn Corn Exchange. Year 5 and 6 children
played xylophone and showed their ability to
compose solos which were based around a
basic melody. The Strings Group did fabu-
lously too with their performance, on violins,
of a variety of pieces they have worked on
over the year. The afternoon ended with a
very raucous piece of communal singing and
dancing which was an example of pure joy.
Mrs White proved her skills by playing
drums at various points in the afternoon. Next
year, we will continue our musical adventures
with Years 4, 5 and 6 learning music through
the xylophone; and Years 2 and 3 singing and
playing a variety of percussion instruments,
again with the excellent support of Ms. Bern-
ers and Mr. Daniels. We are also looking to
Mrs White to develop a band to support our
Collective Worship singing. The Year 6 Prize giving is always a difficult
event with us celebrating the achievements of
our Year 6 in the knowledge that it also
marks the last event before the children leave
us. Again, the stage was decorated by pop art
self portraits of the Year 6 children which
caused much merriment as the audience
worked out who was whom. Bibles were
given out with the kind support of the North-
wold Education Charity as were they book

prizes. Not for the first time did a Mr. Cater
win the Parish Project with Charlie's brilliant
piece about 'A day in the life of a Northwold
Chicken Farm'. The project was creative,
interesting and unusual and will end up in the
archive in Norwich. Awards were given to
the deserving children who received them
amongst cheers and the delight of the audi-
ence. We then moved to the children sharing
their memories of their time in school with
staff echoing with their memories some
funny and some poignant. We will miss these
children and hope that they continue in their
learning journey with joy and a desire to
learn as much as they can and then to take the
world by storm. The children then started
Iceni Academy the following Monday and
the school seemed a little quieter and a little
empty. Our last 8 days were as busy as ever with the
school visiting the Weeting Steam Rally to-
gether, on what must have been the hottest
day of the year. It was a thoroughly enjoyable
day and was a lovely way to end the year.
Our year 5 children have stepped into the
empty shoes of Family and House leaders and
have taken up the slack quickly, it looks like
they will be yet another fabulous Year 6 who
will help shape the school in a positive way. Over the holidays staff have been into school
making changes to learning spaces, with help
of parents, and creating new spaces to use;
the whole school has been thoroughly
cleaned and made ready for our new year.
Sadly, Mrs Randell has announced that she
will retire at the end of October so we will be
with a pair of tortoises purchased, many years
ago, on a coffee stop in Lancashire! Twenty seven members met at the village hall
for our August meeting and a further 5 sent
their apologies. At the end of July eighteen
members headed out to Beck Row for a visit
to Dyeing Crafts. The day was extremely hot
and several members tried to keep in the
shade as much as possible! It was a most
enjoyable afternoon and the refreshments
were of a very high standard. In early August
4 of our members had accepted an invitation
to a Bollywood evening at Watlington WI.
They dressed accordingly and spent the eve-
ning sampling the delicious food and taking a
lesson on dance moves. Two of our members
were quick learners and were invited up onto
the stage to demonstrate their newly acquired
skills! Our speaker for the evening was Linda
Scholes on ‘Everything I always wanted to
know about sex’. This lovely American lady
spoke very amusingly of various aspects of
her upbringing starting with her first boy-
friend (when she was 6) through to meeting
her husband (an American Air Force Officer)
and naming her youngest son after the village
in which they lived (fortunately Great Bar-
ton). The competition was your sexiest item
of clothing – but we had said that no model-
ling was required. Our worthy winners were:
1st Chris Collins, 2nd Glenda and 3rd Rosemary
– and no, we’re not letting on what any of the
items were. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 9th September
at 7.00pm when Susan Parry will be talking
about The Red Barn Murder.

ORTHWOLD WI
There was a very good turnout for our July
meeting, despite the heavy rain shower as we
all began to gather in the Village Hall. Our
President welcomed 31 members (including
another new member) and a visitor. A further
3 members sent their apologies. At the end
of June fourteen of our members visited Lucy
Boston’s house at Hemingford Grey and they
all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. One of
our members declared it was one of the nicest
outings that we have had. Once all the routine
business had been completed John and Jane
Richardson entertained us with their talk
about ‘The Gray Nomads World Travel.’
They had embarked upon an eight month long
journey visiting the United States, Australia
and Malaysia. It was lovely hearing their
personal impressions of the many different
locations they stopped at. Our competition
for the month was an unusual holiday souve-
nir: Ginny was first with her hand beaten
copper plates from Copenhagen, Angela was
second with a selection of dried cactus, drift-
wood and sea glass and Heather was third

As I write this, I am watching our ten month old
grandchild scratching his forehead with his left big
toe and marvelling at his flexibility. Also, today
(August 6th, 2014) son Duncan and his wife Clare
produced our 18th grandchild, a boy called James
Ian Nisbet. My Dad was James and I am Ian so we
are delighted and flattered by their choice of
names. All went well in a birthing pool at home in
Liverpool. Apparently, it is all on Facebook but
Deannie and I are not really into all this social
media stuff so we shall just have to imagine the
scene – much better that way. In all my career, I
have never seen a “pretty” delivery – they usually
involve blood, tears and a variety of other bodily
fluids and waste. Needless to say, the baby is
perfect. Head Office and I spent a few days in London,
staying at the Royal Victoria Dock near the Excel
and O2 arenas and opposite the Emirates cable car
across the Thames. I chose the hotel because the
Docklands Light Railway station is next door. We
arrived to discover that the branch line in question
was closed for the weekend. Hey Ho! The hotel
provided a good breakfast and, one morning, we
watched a lady from the Orient return to her table
with a cup of coffee and look for the sugar. Spot-
ting the salt grinder, she wondered whether it
might contain sugar, picked it up, licked the bot-
tom, discovered it was salt and replaced it on the
table. We had a quiet word with the waitress! One
of the purposes of our trip to London was to attend
a sketching course for beginners at the Victoria
and Albert Museum. For me, a picture has to look
WHAT DOES THE DOCTOR
THIK THIS MOTH?
remarkably like a photograph to be any good
(Google Reg Siger, watercolour artist, to see what
I mean). I was hoping to draw cottages and learn
about perspective. We joined a small group at the V&A and a very
charming lady turned up and sat us around a foun-
tain for an introductory chat about natural light,
reflected light, shade, etc. We were then given 2
hours to sit around a statue on a plinth and draw
him. The statue was of Banovic Strahinja, made in
1908 by Ivan Mestrovic. Banovic had an amazing
abdominal six-pack, excellent for demonstrating
shade and reflected light. On the down side, he had
suffered amputation of both his arms, he had been
decapitated and his legs had been cut off just be-
low the buttocks. Apart from that, he was fine!
(Reminds me of the bloke who had a terrible acci-
dent and lost his left arm, left leg and the left half
of his abdomen. He spent 8 weeks in hospital,
recovering, and he is all right now – Boom Boom!) Next, we had 15 minutes to draw a statue (one of
the angels built for Wolsey's tomb in 1524, sold
away by Henry VIII and reunited with its fellows
at the V&A in 2014). Next, there was 15 minutes
to do a left handed drawing of the tombstone of
Antonio and Caterina Maggi da Bassano (1520)
and, after an excellent Turkish lunch, I had two
hours to draw Clytic, an ocean nymph from Ro-
man mythology who turned into a sunflower. She
was crafted in 1868 by George Watts. Not to put
too fine a point on it, we had the head and shoul-
ders of a lady, with her head thrown out backwards
and sideways, her bosoms thrown out forwards
and both her arms chopped off six inches below
the shoulders. This torso was sitting in a sort of
vase, possibly a lily pad, and was fiendishly diffi-
cult to draw. I have the evidence! The teacher was brilliant – she saw good in every-
thing! My horse looked like a camel, but had “a
magnificent, striking face” and so on. I have
bought a book about drawing the sort of stuff I
would like to draw. The jokes have been a bit thin on the ground re-
cently so, here we go: A doctor was listening to a man's chest with a
stethoscope. The man asked “How do I stand?” “I
dunno, replied the doctor, that's what I'm trying to
work out”. He gave the man 6 months to live but
the man couldn't pay his bill, so the doctor gave
him another six months. The doctor rang another
patient and said “Your cheque has returned”
“Yes”, she said “So has my arthritis”. “Doctor, I've
got ringing in my ears” “Whatever you do, don't
answer”.
A drunk was brought before a judge. “You have
been brought to this court for drinking” “OK, let's
get started”
Sammy was a single guy living at home with his
father and working in the family business. When
he found out he was going to inherit a fortune
when his ill father died, he decided he needed to
find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One
evening, at an investment meeting , he spotted the
most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natu-
ral beauty took his breath away. "I may look like
just an ordinary guy," he said to her, "But in just a
few months my father will die and I will inherit
£200 million." Impressed, the woman asked for his
business card and three days later, she became his
stepmother. Women are so much better at financial
planning than men.

BERIE
As we Silver Surfers know, sometimes we have
trouble with our computers. I had a problem yes-
terday, so I called Eric the 11 year old next door,
whose bedroom looks like Mission Control and
asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of
buttons and solved the problem. As he was walk-
ing away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?
He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.' I didn't want
to appear stupid, but nonetheless enquired, 'An ,ID
ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it
again.' Eric grinned...'Haven't you ever heard of an
ID ten T error before? 'No,' I replied. 'Write it
down,' he said' and I think you'll work it out.' So I
wrote down: ID10T. I used to like Eric. Two sharks eyeing up a scuba diver “Don't eat the
hard bit on his back – It'll give you terrible wind”
Finally, try this – While sitting in an upright chair,
lift your right foot off the floor and circle it clock-
wise. Then, with your right hand, make a figure six
in the air. Your foot will change movement to
anticlockwise. Keep trying to make your foot win
– I'll bet you cannot!
Best wishes to you all – Ian isbet

Present: Vicky Bright – Clerk, Cllr. Martin Storey - NCC and 5 members of the public. Cllr. Crisp welcomed all to the meeting. Item Action
14/06/1 Public Forum – LGA 1972, Section 100(1): A member of the public raised the issue of the Manor House and the complaints being made to the local authorities regarding the fires that had been burning
to dispose of the waste in the House. The member of the public wanted to stress how important the Rodwell Project was to the village and the Manor House
and asked that the Parish Council offered its full support to the Rodwells. The Chairman advised that she would be addressing the issue in her Chairman’s
report later on the agenda. Residents of Normandy Close advised that they had been in touch with BCKLWN and NCC and had been advised to contact their Parish Council regarding
the parking issues in Normandy Close. The Clerk advised that a letter had been sent to both BCKLWN and NCC and she was awaiting a reply from them. One member of the public asked if the Council would consider looking into having a Defibrillator in the Village. The Council asked the
Clerk to look into the possibility and the implications and to report at the next meeting. Clerk 14/06/2 Local Authority Reports:
i) orfolk County Council
Cllr. Martin Storey informed the Council that from 27th May, the County Council was now committee based and not run by cabinet. He hoped this would
enable Councillor’s to have more input in decision making and therefore would have more contribution. He felt this would be more beneficial to the people
of Norfolk. The monies due for the incinerator project had now been met. From October 2014 NCC & BCKLWN can confirm that recycling in residential bins will now
include glass and more types of plastic ii) Borough Council of Kings Lynn & West orfolk

Resolved 14/06/5.01
14/06/5 The minutes of the last meeting held on 6th May 2014 were adopted as a true statement and signed by the Chairman (RC)
Reports and Matters Arising from the Minutes of the Last Meeting (For Info Only):
Chairman’s Report
14/06/6 Cllr. Crisp confirmed that the complaint about the wood smoke at the Manor House had been resolved. A letter had been i) received from Professor Rodwell in which he explains the work to be carried out in the immediate future; bonfires will only be lit for a brief period and not continuously
as before. Cllr. Crisp advised that she had met with Professor Rodwell and although it will take longer than anticipated, he has much more rubbish to clear
away than he realised, as BCKLWN had not cleared the site as stated in the Village Life newsletter, she believes he will continue with the project even
though being quite disheartened by the work and complaints received. Cllr. Crisp urged the residents to offer their support along with the Parish Councils.
Cllr. Peake voiced his concerns over the bonfires being illegal and nuisance for nearby neighbors. Another complaint received is concerning a very large van parked at the junction of High Street/ West End and Methwold Road, it is making the turn towards
the Church from Methwold Road, really hazardous. It has already caused a ‘road-rage’ kind of incident where tempers were lost and shouting occurred. The
issue of parking in Northwold was raised generally, with highlighted problem areas being Normandy Close, Hovells Lane/Church and West End. The Clerk
advised that she had raised the parking issues with BCKLWN and NCC. The suggestion of using the vacant allotments land for parking was raised. It was
decided that the Clerk would discuss options and follow up with BCKLWN and NCC and invite them to the next meeting, it was agreed to also invite a
representative of Norfolk Constabulary to the next meeting. The Clerk will look into Allotments Land Usage Guidance and costings for using the land
for parking. Clerk ii) Clerk’s Report and Updates from previous minutes
Parking ormandy Close
Page 9
I can confirm that I have sent a letter to BCKLWN Parking Operations and copied in Norfolk County Council Highways, with supporting evidence. I am yet
to receive a reply from either authority. Asset Register and Insurance
As you are aware the Council’s Asset Register was inaccurate. I have now determined the assets the council owns and their replacement/insurance values and
the asset register have been updated. I will be working with the Insurance company to ensure that the cover we have is sufficient for the asset register value. CGM Contract
The CGM contract has now been signed by both parties and I am in receipt of a copy. This agreement is for 3 years, as agreed. Carole at CGM will be sending
me an amended invoice shortly. Cllr. Jenkinson met with Julie Glover and discussed the Parish Council’s concerns regarding the standard of the service
supplied by CGM, it was confirmed that now the contract had been signed the schedule of works would be met accordingly. Councillor Vacancy
I am currently working on adverts for the website, notice board and the newsletter to advertise the vacancy at the Parish Council, and hope to have these placed
before the next meeting. Clerk Website Clerk
I am currently working on updating the website. I need all Cllr.’s to provide their contact details, (address, email, & Tel. No), and to indicate to me which
contact detail they wish to provide to the public on the website and notice board. 14/06/7 Correspondence:

The updated Asset Register 2014-2015 was reviewed and adopted by the Council and signed as such by the Chairman (RC). The Clerk advised that at present no procedure was in place to carry out risk assessment on the Council’s assets and property. The Clerk advised that it was best prac-
tice to perform a risk assessment quarterly throughout the year, to ensure Health & Safety requirements were being met and that assets were being maintained and
repaired appropriately. It was discussed that the Council would carry out risk assessments on its assets quarterly and that a committee would be formed at the next
meeting to be responsible for this. iv) Adoption of the Annual Governance Statement for 2013-2014 and Internal Audit Report Clerk

Council that the patio would not encroach on the Cricket Field and that it would entail no costs to the Parish Council as the materials had been donated. Resolved 14/06/10.02
