The topic for the 2016 Carnivalis PAINT THE VILLAGE RED
I have been informed that the ParishCouncil first started the ball rolling in1976 for the village. It was run the follow-ing year by the village groups so if mymaths are right this next one is the 40thhence PAINT THE VILLAGE RED.
It is a day when all groups can join in andshow what our village can do. Unfortu-nately for me this next one is my last asChairman of the PTFA and we must keepthe annual celebration going. Somewherethere must be someone who is willing totake over and put their ideas forward. Iwill not just walk away but offer any helpto the person (s) that take over.
The Carnival is looked forward my manypeople outside the village and alwaysseems to fill the Fendick Field. It's a greattradition which must keep going as manyother towns, villages etc have lost theirsfor good.

THE KIPLINGCOATES DERBY
Has anyone reading this heard of this Point to Point horse race?Regarded as the oldest in England first run back in 1519, always on the third Tuesday inMarch.If you live in East Yorkshire you most certainly have.
It is open to all riders, all ages, all breeds – astride or side saddle. The rider must weigha minimum of 10 stones (140lbs/63.6kgs) or weighted - up to qualify.
Run on wide road verges and farm tracks the course is 4 miles long, and crosses twocountry lanes, a disused railway bridge and one major A road.
Although a flat race (no jumps) it is far from level, from the start the course climb278 ft, drops 65ft rises again 135ft to the finish line, 290 ft above the start.
All horses and riders must be at the finish line to be weighed and registered, each to payEnglish Pounds 4.25. No one really knows how many horses will enter until the morningof the race as there are no pre- bookings. The course clerk then reads the rules aloud tothe assembled, then all entries then canter the 4 miles to the start line to turn round andrace back. All must cross the finish line by 2p.m.
Tradition deems that if the race is ever cancelled it can never be “rid again”. This beingso, in the severe winter of 1947 a local farmer walked a carthorse through deep snowdrifts around the course to keep the tradition, and also in 2001 foot and mouth closed thecountryside but again one horse was walked the course to ensure the Derby’s unbrokenrecord.
£50 goes to the lucky winner, in the last 10 years 9 lady riders have been successful.Bizarrely the second home receives, the sum of all the combined entries, usually total-ling more money that the winner!
In 2007 the first 3 horses home were Charlie, Flossie and Boris, Quality!
In more recent times a book has been run, but as no form is published and entries un-known any wagers are made purely ‘in the flesh’. Large crowds gather at the finish lineas there is no clear vision line from the start to the end.
In 2012 fog was so thick the riders all agreed to end the race ½ mile short of the finishline rather than risk crossing the main road.

On Tuesday 9th January, 30 members at-tended our regular meeting and followingthe usual WI business we were treated to afascinating talk and slide show by Mr.Geoff Evans on the ‘Life of a Racehorse’.Mr. Evans works at Newmarket and hasbeen involved with horses all his profes-sional life and he so obviously loves hisjob.
The photographs covered the time beforeconception, right through to the birth andbeyond. Many of us had no idea whatgoes into the breeding and care of thesefabulous animals and the joys and trage-dies that occur. Nor did we realise themoney that changes hands during thewhole process -prior to conception, to thebirth, racing and the trade in these ex-tremely valuable horses, the sums in-volved are amazing.
The slides included photographs of a cae-sarean operation, unfortunately not ahappy outcome, the mare died and thenwe were told how they ‘foster’ a new bornfoal, followed by photographs of a veryhappy young foal running around his pad-
dock. The whole business is one of joyand sadness. Mr. Evans answered doz-ens of our questions, which goes toshow how interesting we all found theevening.
We then had a delicious supper, pro-vided by Angie, Doreen and Eileen.

Scheme I have been asked to clarify thefares passengers are asked to pay the driv-ers. Some time back a price list wasprinted in the Village Life (before mytime) which was intended as a guideline. The reason for this is that passengerspay 22p per mile and this is from theDRIVER'S house to destination and backfrom destination to DRIVER'Shouse. Now some drivers may live onemile, or even two or three miles from thepassenger so of course makes the journeythat little bit further.

THE BRECKLAND SOCIETY: SECRETARY REQUIRED
The Breckland Society was set up in 2003 to promote interest and research into thenatural, built and social heritage of the East Anglian Brecks. It holds events throughoutthe year and also runs local history projects.
A part-time Secretary is sought to assist in the administration of the Breckland Society’swork. This will involve working closely with the Chairman of the Society and othermembers of the Committee, handling membership (new joiners, renewals, etc.), organis-ing Society events (advertising to members, booking venues, liaising with speakers,ensuring equipment is available, etc.) and assisting with the quarterly Newsletter andwebsite updates, as well as circulating papers and taking the minutes at approximatelyfour Committee meetings each year and the Society's Annual General Meeting.
General administrative experience is essential, especially the compilation and mainte-nance of membership and distribution lists (requiring full working knowledge of Micro-soft Excel and Word).
An honorarium (payable quarterly) is offered for this work.

Have you ever tried wearing your com-puter? I use my home computer a lot,mostly for Emails, word processing, run-ning a boat club and the church 200 Cluband so on. I have never really embracedsocial media such as Facebook and Iswitch my mobile on when I want to makea call. When we go away, I usually takemy Ipad and my Mac Book Air, which islike a laptop. I use the Ipad to access myEmails and the newspapers online and theMac Book, with its larger memory andcomputing capacity, comes in handy forwatching DVDs in the evenings, process-ing photographs and online learning. Mostairlines allow 10kg hand baggage within asmall suitcase but some only allow 7kgand are rigid in the application of the rule,charging £18 for every additional kilo.With the 10kg airlines, all is well becausethe weight of the suitcase, the Ipad, theMac Book Air, the external hard drive, theDVD player attachment and my cameracase containing the camera and zoom lenscomes to about 10kg.
Our trip in January was in the 7kg cate-gory and there was no way I could get theweight down to 7kg. Carrying the lap topat check in does not work because theeagle-eyed girl always says “Is that goingin your hand luggage?” and makes meweigh it. I once read an article aboutwearing your luggage. It is possible to buya coat with many pockets and to put allyour clothes and accoutrements for twoweeks in those pockets. You would looklike a camel at the check out and this isprobably best avoided. However, the ideais good. I bought one of those pairs oftrousers with multiple pockets down thelegs and I always wear a fairly capaciousred fleece with good pockets. Arrive at theairport – into the trouser pockets went thezoom lens, the external hard drive and theDVD playing attachment. The bulky cam-era had to stay in the case but the MacBook went into the rear inside of my trou-sers, next to the skin, and the Ipad wentdown the front! The red fleece covered thewhole bizarre appearance at the top of mytrousers and I approached the check-indesk stiff-legged and nonchalant with a
