Begin Reading Lab Safety Rules

Lab Safety

• Everyone is responsible for knowing and following the safety rules.

• Minimizes accidents• Ensures pleasant and safe working

and learning environment• Lab sense is common sense in many

ways. If you know that you should not do something, THEN DON’T.

Don’t let your last words be…..

•“Hey y’all, Watch This.”

• Always read lab materials before beginning any lab activity. Make sure you understand what to do. If you don’t……..ASK.

• Never work alone in the lab area without a teacher present.

• Never mix chemicals unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Some chemical combinations can have extremely lethal consequences.

Basic Safety Procedures

• Eye Protection– Safety goggles

must be worn during any lab experiment. NO EXCEPTIONS.

– Contact lenses and regular glasses do not provide protection.

– Contact lenses should be avoided.

• Other Personal Protection– Gloves (if needed)– Aprons (if needed)– Closed toe shoes

• This is required for all lab days. Bring a spare pair and leave in a locker . NO EXCEPTIONS.

• Fire Protection– Know the location of

the fire extinguisher, fire blanket and fire alarm pull stations.

– Know how to use the fire extinguisher and fire blanket.

– Know the exit routes from each classroom on campus.

• Electrical Protection– Inspect all cords and

plugs on equipment before using.

– Do not use equipment with bare or frayed cords or equipment with bent or missing plug prongs.

– Do not use extension cords.

FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS.

Spills: Must be cleaned up according to type of chemical and need for neutralization. Gloves should be worn. DO NOT POUR CHEMICALS DOWN THE SINK UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY THE TEACHER.
