INTRODUCTION

GeoTrips is a new interactive website highlighting many of

New Zealand's extraordinary geological features and

landforms, and how to visit them. It is aimed at non-

specialists and encourages hands-on, active investigation,

inquiry and learning.

It is of interest to travellers, tourists, teachers and anyone

who loves exploring nature. The site currently has over

300 locations throughout the country.

VUW has partnered with GNS Science via a summer

scholarship project to develop locations in the Wellington

and Wairarapa regions (Fig 1). Thirty-six sites were

identified and added to the website.

• Geological Age: This shows an absolute age or age

range of the main features at a location

• Also included: A rating out of 5 stars, accessibility of

the site, location map. Refer to figure 2.

Further Progress

Scientists from around New Zealand are adding their

knowledge of geological sites to increase the coverage

of GeoTrips around the country. There are still more

geologically interesting locations including the great

walks and tramping tracks, tourist hotspots, and roadside

viewpoints.
