Purposes of an Interview

• Gives the employer an opportunity to see you and talk to you in person

• Gives you an opportunity to find out more about the job and company

BEFORE THE INTERVIEW• Learn all you can about the employer

• Bring important documents to the interview

• Know where you are to go for the interview

• Dress for success

• Prepare answers for possible interview questions

Learn All You Can About The Employer

• Check out the newspaper-ads, business section

• Visit the local Chamber of Commerce

• Research on the Internet

Bring Important Documents To The Interview

• Resume• Photocopies of

– Diplomas– Awards– Certificates– Driver’s license– Social security card– Letters of reference– Military papers

• Samples of your work if applicable

Know Where You Are To Go For The Interview

• Visit the interview site beforehand

• Allow extra time to get to interview site

• Go alone-have others wait in the car

Dress For Success• Clean

• Neat

• Dress for the job

• Practice by looking in a full-length mirror

• Ask yourself “Would ___________ hire this person?”

Prepare Answers For Possible Interview Questions

• Tell me about yourself.• Why do you want to work for this company?• Why do you think you would like this type of

work?• What are your strengths?• What are your weaknesses?• Who has made the most positive influence in your

life, and why?

Introductions

• Make sure your cell phone is OFF

• Shake the interviewer’s hand with a firm handshake.

• Look into the interviewer’s eyes.

• Say “Pleased to meet you, Mr. Smith. I am Jim Johnson.”

• Give the interviewer your resume.

• Remaining standing until invited to sit.

Body Language• Sit straight in the chair

• Look alert

• Answer the questions with enthusiasm

• Do not chew gum, eat candy, or chew your nails

Answering Questions

• Use correct English grammar

• Do not use slang

• Be positive by letting the interviewer know that you want the job for other reasons than the money

Asking Questions

• When the interviewer asks if you have any questions-sign that interview is near the end

• Show interest in the company by asking one or two questions

• Do not ask questions about raises, sick leave, vacations, or other fringe benefits

Ending The Interview

• Stand up

• Look the interviewer in the eyes

• Shake hands

• Say “Thank you for the interview. I am interest in the job.” “When will you make a decision?” “May I call back at that time to find out your decision?”
