Souvenirs!ON BOARD OUR trains we have a selection of souvenirs and books, which you can buy directly from our train hosts. At our shop at the station in Östersund you can buy train tickets and get more information, but you can also find brochures about many municipalities along Inlandsbanan and pick up some sou-venirs. We stock a number of books about Inlandsbanan, rang-ing from travel guides to beautifully illustrated and historical guides. A book makes a perfect present, as well as being so-mething you buy as a memento of the journey. The shop also sells our cute mascots – the elk and bear that have long been part of the Inlandsbanan brand. You can also find environmentally friendly bags, T-shirts, postcards, magnets and key rings with Inlandsbanan motifs. Some souvenirs can also be bought from the train hosts on board the trains.

The train host – your friend on board the trainAll INlANDsBANAN tRAINs have knowledgeable, helpful train hosts. They will help you with tickets and will take care of orders for meals and snacks. They are there for you and if possible will help you resolve practical issues. They will tell you about the places and scenery through which you are travelling. The hosts remain on board the train and do not accompany you on excursions or to your accommodation.

Menu for the entire trip!GOOD fOOD is part of a good holiday experience. There are no restaurants on Inlandsbanan’s coaches or trains. Instead, we stop on the way for meals and coffee breaks at restaurants and snack bars with which we have service agreements. At the back of the On-board magazine, on pages 24–27, you will find our menu of what is on offer at the various stops. You will be able to choose from menus full of local specialities on board the train and your train hosts will take your orders. You pay the food supplier directly. The menu will also state whether you will be served in a restaurant, or whether it is a take-away meal. You can enjoy your take-away al fresco, but you are also welcome to have your food on board. Also, remember to buy something to drink, especially on a hot day. The timetable will tell you where and for how long we will stop.

Welcome on board – your trip has just begunInlandsbanan runs between Kristinehamn in the south and Gällivare in the north. The 1,300-kilometre journey is packed with opportuni-ties to explore the Swedish interior. There is plenty of time to enjoy all that the journey has to offer and you can create your own itinerary based entirely on your individual interests and preferences. You spend the day travelling and get off to eat and sleep. The train stops for food and coffee and to take in places of interest along the route.INlANDsBANAN pAckAGe tOURs are a simple and com-fortable way to enjoy the complete experience. Both travel and hotel accommodation are booked and organised when you pay for the package. Selected activities are included but you are able to choose everything else that you would like to do on your journey. You can find all our package tours later in the brochure. If you would rather explore Inlandsbanan independently then try the Inlandsbanan Card, our own Interrail pass. It is valid for 14 days and you plan your own route, decide where you will stop and for how long. You might prefer to travel on one or more short sections of the railway, in which case you can buy a ticket for each individual journey. We are happy to help you find the option that suits you best.

Inlandsbanan & Hurtigruten in winter whiteImagine a train journey through the Swedish wilderness with glittering snow outside the train window. Later the journey turns into a beautiful cruise among deep fjords and snow-covered mountain tops with the legendary Hurtigruten. Welcome to the Dream Holiday in Winter White!

Winter White is a package tour complete with tour leader which allows you to discover Inlandsbanan in winter with selected activities along the way. On the same trip you will also be able to take in a cruise along the Norwegi-an coast with Hurtigruten. Winter White takes place in the last week of February, when there is a good chance of being able to see the famous Northern Lights.

In 2014 the package tour starts on Sunday 23 February with a welcome meeting and overnight stay in Östersund. The following day the journey begins on the northbound Inlandsbanan train. We will stay overnight in Vilhelmina, Jokkmokk and Gällivare, with activities arranged in all these places. We will, for instance, be visiting the LKAB iron ore mine outside Gällivare, the Mountain and Sami Museum Ájtte and Jokkmokks Tenn tin factory, as well as ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi. Optional extras include the chance to try dog sledding or riding a snowmobile. From Gäl-livare the trip continues westwards via Narvik towards Harstad, where you will spend the night. The following day you embark on Hur-

tigruten to spend two days and two nights on board. You get off Hurtigruten in Trondheim after breakfast and have a day to explore Trondheim before returning to Östersund, where the package ends with an overnight stay in a hotel. Should you want to stay longer in Östersund, we will be happy to help you book extra nights, either before or after the package tour and obviously including a con-necting train to and from Inlandsbanan.

In the early 2000s, Inlandsbanan and Hurtigruten started talking about

offering a joint package tour. A trip that would begin in Dalarna, run through

the Finnmarken region in Sweden and continue northwards towards the

mountains and the vast swamps in Lapland. It would then carry on from

Gällivare to Narvik along the spectacular Malmbanan railway, with the

mountains and the Rombakk fjord right outside the train window. And then

it would continue southwards along the Norwegian coast on a cruise with

Hurtigruten, the most beautiful sea journey in the world.

This year the package tour celebrates its tenth anniversary, a trip that

became a huge success! Thanks to our travellers it has turned out to be

our most popular package tour – the once in a lifetime Dream Holiday!

EvEry yEar, Inlandsbanan puts together a survey to send out to some of the people who have travelled with us, so that we are able to constantly develop and improve our holidays and of course find out what you, the travellers, have to say. Prior to the start of this season we spoke to Lena, who booked the Dream Holiday package tour last year. This is what Lena, who was travelling with her friend, thought about the trip.How did you come to choose the Inlands-banan & Hurtigruten package tour?

Ha, ha! Well, my friend and I were both given a trip as a 50th birthday present! We had both wanted to travel on Hurtigruten for a long time and we had friends who had done the trip. The deciding factor was visiting the Inlandsbanan stand at the annual travel fair in Gothenburg, where we found out more about the package holiday. When did you travel?

Just before the Midsummer holiday, which turned out to be a good choice. Not too warm, just the right number of people, and, above all, the Midnight Sun. Expectations before the trip?

Well, I had heard it was beautiful, but I could never have imagined it would be quite so beautiful! Any worries before travelling?

About getting seasick and being forced to stay in my cabin. However, I did not feel at all seasick – the weather was brilliant, which was another thing I had been worried about. Rain and bad weather can ruin the best of holidays.

What to bring and what to wear? We looked up the weather forecast online beforehand and this gave us a good idea. We packed items for both warm, cold, windy and wet weather, but above all we brought comfortable clothes. Your best memory?

Oh – the morning when we woke up in Harstad. There was no wind at all, the sea was smooth and the sun was shining brightly. It was fantastic. The first day on board Hurtigruten – Lofoten was indescribably beautiful! The contrast between Inlandsbanan and Hurtig-ruten was cool, the Swedish interior and the Norwegian coast with its fjords and mountains.

The Midnight Sun and the Arctic Circle. We saw reindeer along Inlandsbanan on several occasions and once we saw a sea eagle by Trollfjorden on board Hurtigruten!

It’s really difficult to single out one memory. (Lena laughs)How was the food during the trip?

There was a marked contrast in the food. On Inlandsbanan there was a menu on board the train, we placed our order with the train host and when we got to the stop, everything was ready. We only needed to pay for the food and enjoy it. On Hurtigruten both breakfast and lunch were buffets, which suited us because we love fish and shellfish dishes! Dinner was a three-course sit-down meal. Quite a treat. (Lena gigglesWould you recommend the trip to others?

Without a doubt! However, the weather does make a big difference, particularly on Hurtig- ruten, and we could not have had better

weather! No complaints, other than that in hindsight we had too little time to spend along Inlandsbanan. But we intend to make another trip on Inlandsbanan and will almost certainly choose the package tour where you can choose where to stay overnight, while Inlandsbanan takes care of the booking. In the future we may bring our grandchildren, who knows?Lena’s tips to other travellers:

Take the Steam Train in Arvidsjaur – very charming.

Don’t forget your camera, several memory cards and binoculars!

On board Hurtigruten – visit the information desk and get a daily programme.

Cards are accepted and work best on the ship, but along Inlandsbanan cash payment is preferred.

Take the day to explore Trondheim.Do take something along from Gällivare to

eat on the way to Narvik, the range on train was not very large.

Pick up the courage to speak to your fellow travellers. We made many new friends!

Earphones for your mobile phone. (Especial-ly this year, when the new app on Inlandsbanan is being launched)

Mosquito repellent was useful for the times when we spent longer periods outside.

Do read the documents sent to you from Inlandsbanan, they contained many good tips as did the homepage. We should have been more active and contacted the local tourist information offices for tips.

NEW: Digital travel guide in three languages!This season we are launching our new digital travel guide app, which you can download for free to your smartphone or tablet! It goes without saying that it does not replace our wonderful train hosts, who bring a very personal touch to your journey – perhaps with a song or a story. Instead, the digital guide is a simple way of finding out so much more about the journey on Inlandsbanan – before, during and after the trip. You can choose to read or listen to different parts according to your own interests, and you can do this in Swedish, English or German!

During the trip your location will be shown in the guide and it will give you suggestions for things to read and listen to about the pla-ces we are going past and travelling to. And the digital guide will be continuously updated with more information so please tell us what you think and what you would like to know more about!

Take the train from Gothenburg directly to InlandsbananNew this year! During the period 1 July–4 August, a train service will operate on the route Kristinehamn–Mora and Mora–Kristine-hamn, through a new cooperation agreement between Inlands-banan and Tågåkeriet i Bergslagen (Tågab).

During that period your can travel directly from Gothenburg to Kristinehamn with Tågab and then continue with Inlandsbanan from Mora.

If you have an Inlandsbanan Card you will receive a 20% discount on the journey Gothenburg–Kristinehamn.

Youths aged 16–25 and students enjoy a 25% discount while senior citizens are entitled to 10% off.

PriCe CUt! We have reduced the price from SEK 50 to SEK 30/seatreservation. Seat reservations are not included with the Inlandsbanan Card. We recommend to ensure a seat on the train that you book in advance. If you want to travel for a little while longer you can buy an extra week for only SEK 400/card/adult. TRAIN TO VEMDALEN

By taking the train and our local bus service – the Snow commuter service – you can travel from anywhere in Sweden to the ski facilities in Vemdalen. An easy, convenient and environmentally friendly journey. There is a direct night train service from Malmö via Helsingborg and Gothenburg throughout the winter. It is a direct service, which means you wake up rested in Vemdalen. The day train from Stockholm, with daily departures throughout the winter, gives you plenty of opportunities for visiting Vemdalen whenever it suits you.

DEPARTURE: From Malmö on Sundays. You can get on the train in Lund, Helsingborg, Halmstad, Gothenburg, Skövde and Kristinehamn. Inlandsbanan Festival This summer it is once more time for the Inlandsbanan Festi-val, which for the seventh year running is being organised by the cultural association Kulturföreningen Inlandskult from Arvidsjaur, headed by Johan Piribauer. It is a travelling festival of music and culture, where the artists join the rail coaches and there are events at different places along the railway line in the week before the Midsummer weekend in June.

Johan Piribauer is a musician himself and has often entertained travellers during the stops at the stations in Arvidsjaur and Mos-kosel in the summertime. Johan’s enthusiasm for Inlandsbanan is evident, and this seems to run in the family, since his son Jochen is this summer working as a train host for the second year running. Don’t be surprised if Jochen takes out his guitar and treats you to a beautiful song – another thing he has inherited from his father.

Skansen Alanäs, guided tour: The redoubt was built during the years of mili-tary preparedness between 1939 and 1945. In April 1940 the Germans had oc-cupied Norway and Sweden was very worried about the possibility of a German attack. Therefore, a chain of bases, so-called redoubts, were built to prevent or slow down an attack. In 2011, Skansen Alanäs was opened for public viewing.

Havsnäs Wind Farm, guided tour: It was opened in September 2010 after 18 months of building work. There are 48 turbines located on three hills in a forest landscape north of Strömsund. The plant is in a favourable location for wind power and the area has been designated as being of national interest for harnessing wind power. Owing to its size, it is a useful asset for reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Havsnäs Nostalgia Café: The cafe is furnished in a 1960s style with pictures of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley on the walls. There is also a flea market in an adjacent building, as well as a smaller building with handicrafts from Havsnäs Sheep Products.

Traditional Sami dress is not so traditional that new materials and colours have not been able to find their way into tunics and ribbons. Today these garments are mostly used for public holidays and festivals, but there is growing interest among fashion-conscious young Sami in using Sami dress for everyday wear.

> > Woman’s costume from Jukkasjärvi. The tunic is also used in the Gällivare area. Made from beige faux suede and decorated with strips of red and yellow wool fabric. The shawl is held together with three silver brooches. The belt is made from wool fabric and is fastened with a silver buckle. Under the belt there is a woven ribbon made from wool yarn with tassels at the ends. The leather shoes are made by a tannery and wool braids are wound around the shoes as protection against snow and water.

The basic item in the Sami costume is the tunic with a belt around the waist. This is worn with other items of clothing such as a cap, shawl, chest cover, trousers and shoes made of hide or fur. In the past the tunic was the Sami’s everyday wear. The original mate-rial was of course reindeer hide and reindeer fur, but the Sami got hold of rough woollen cloth quite early on and from the 1400s also the expensive English fabric that was used for festive dress. Intricate silver jewellery adorned the finery on special occasions. Fabric and silver were acquired through bartering at the annual markets in the Norwegian fjords.

Sami dress silver is much like that which can be found in Skåne. This may

seem peculiar but there is a logical explanation.

“Both Skåne people and the Sami were well-off in medieval times and could afford to buy silver. The Sami were wealthy

because of good hunting and valuable furs. The reason the

may be due to the fact that during the Hanseatic period the same silversmith worked in Lübeck in the winter and in Bergen in the summer, passing Skåne on the way. The models have then been passed down the generations,” said Sunna Kuoljok, ethnologist at the Sami museum in Jokkmokk.

Traditional Sami dress involves a “basic appearance” based on the wearer’s regional

association, age and sex. That’s not to say that the outfits in an area are identical. Sami dress design has always accommodated individual taste.

“There is a basic cut and pattern, but otherwise the outfit can be altered in accordance with the wearer’s wishes and the seam-stress’s ability and creativity,” said Sunna.

When it comes to traditional festive dress, family traditions tend to dominate. Fabrics in classic colours are often selected, but in principle any fabric that takes one’s fancy can be used. The classic decorative colours are bright colours in blue, green, red and yellow. Purple and pink were added after synthetic colours started to be used in the textiles industry in the 1800s.

How to wear the costume varies according to the occasion and individual taste. At a funeral it may seem most appropriate to dress in strict style with cap and shawl. At a New Year’s party the tunic

> > Man’s costume from Jokkmokk. Tunic made of maroon wool fabric, under which the man wears a woollen chest covering, de-corated with white leather and fabric in different colours. The tunic has a collar, as all men’s tunics do, and is decorated with wool strips and wool yarn. A narrow woven ribbon is sewn onto the hem, and the belt consists of woven wool yarn with tassels, and is fastened at the waist with a tie ribbon decorated with tassels. Hat made from blue rough woollen cloth, decorated with two rows of tin wire. Trousers of tanned reindeer hide and shoes made by a tannery. Woollen braids are wound around the tops of the shoes.

> > Leather tunic from Jokkmokk. The leather tunic was for a long time everyday wear in the summertime in the Jokkmokk area. Making the tunic is a laborious task, with the hide being tanned and rubbed until it is soft and sinews being spun for thread and used to sew double seams. The tunic is therefore less common today and is used only for holidays and festivals. The leather tunic always has a collar and a v-neck, and it is decorated with strips of wool cloth and an exclusive edging of white reindeer leather. Underneath is a chest covering decorated with white leather and wool cloth, and there is a woven ribbon at the hem. may well be worn with nylon stockings and court shoes. This is perfectly okay.

Sami fashion, like all fashion, is influenced by trends. This is particularly noticeable among young Sami people.

“In the last two years, young people have been looking at tunics which were fashionable in the 1960s. Shorter tunics and a tighter fit have been popular,” said Sunna.

Sami costumes are produced by hand by Sami crafts people and designers. Often they run a one-person business alongside reindeer husbandry or other work. All clothing businesses undertake some form of traditional craft, but more and more busines-ses are expanding into entirely new products.

“According to our information, 65 of the 156 registered crafts businesses make clothes. Around fifteen of these have focused more on new items than others. This is a growing trend,” said Christina Kuhmunen of the Sami Crafts Foundation.

A company that is different from the rest in many ways is Stoorstålka.

“We felt there was a need for other Sami-style

clothes than just the traditional festive costume. We wanted belts for jeans and cheaper items that can be used every day. We couldn’t find these items in any shops, so we decided to make them our-selves,” said Lotta Stoor of Stoorstålka.

The first product was a cool Sami- inspired leather belt, which they are still manufacturing themselves by hand. In the intervening two years, Lotta and her husband have designed T-shirts, shawls, shoes, skirts and jewellery, which are now being mass-produced in various places in Sweden and abroad. The goods are sold via the online store and at various retailers.

“We don’t compete with tailoring. The beautiful traditional costumes will always be around, but there is also a desire to dress in Sami style every day,” said Lotta.

Facts –saMIs IN sÁPMI

sápmi is the Sami name for the geographical area where reindeer-herding Sa-mis live. The name means ”Sami Land” and covers parts of Russia, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

In all, there are some 80 000 Samis, 20 000 of whom live in Sweden.

the samis have their own flag and national anthem. Their National holiday is 6 February.

sami language is related to Finnish and comprises three different variations and associated dialects. Since the language was banned in school for many years, only a quarter of all Samis today are able to speak their own langu-age. 85% of these speak Northern Sami. “Hello!” in Northern Sami is “Bures!”

sami has around 300 words for snow and ice. Around 10% of Swedish Sami work in reindeer hus-bandry. 90% of all reindeer husbandry businesses are in Norrbotten county.

Other sami occupations are crafts, hunting and fish-ing. Growing new industries are tourism, media, art and music.

Sami costumes are hand-made and the variations are endless. Originally, the costume varied according to which Sami village and family the person wearing it belonged to, and also according to their f inancial status. Today, the costumes are used exclusively on special occasions such as weddings, New Year, funerals, etc.

A legendary, genuine traditionJokkmokk Winter Market has a long and genuine history and is considered to have been an unbroken tradition for more than 400 years. It is said that the first Winter Market was held in 1605. Permanent mar-ketplaces near the Sami winter camping grounds were established by the Swedish monarchy in the early 1600s in all Sami re-gions on both sides of the Gulf of Bothnia. The aim was to strengthen the state’s hold over the population in the north and raise taxes, hold court sessions and spread the word of God. A market in the Sami regions during the coldest time of year had many advantages. The Sami were gathered in their winter camping grounds in forest regions where the reindeer could graze, and the frozen waterways made for excel-lent thoroughfares for market traders, state representatives and men of the church.

A normal market attracts 35,000 – 45,000 visitors from all over the world and more than 500 travelling salesmen. During the 400th Jubilee in 2005, twice as many people as usual visited the market. By comparison, 3,000 people live in the com-munity throughout the rest of the year.

The 400th Jubilee was officially opened by the Swedish King and Queen. The entire

community celebrated, making decora-tive snow and ice sculptures and lighting torches. The week began with a church service in the Old Church that followed a liturgy from the 1600s. The Historic Market was opened, extending the traditional three days of market to six. The Historic Market is looking to recreate the atmosphere of a market 400 years ago and is held in the original market area. Here, goods such as hand-milled barley meal, home-made oint-ments, rough woollen cloth, broadcloth and warm shoes made from reindeer fur from the reindeer’s legs are traded and bartered on a small scale.

According to legend, the market is not a “proper” market unless the temperature is below –20o C.In 2012 there was no question about it being a proper market, with the thermometer dropping to –41o C!Cold does not begin to describe it.Not even the sun was able to provide any warmth during this unforgettable and fantastic market.

Taking the Snow Train to the mountains“Travellers on the Snow Train to Vemdalen, the train is arriving at platform 10.”

We are at Malmö central sta-tion. Outside the weather is grey and bleak, the rain hangs in the air and the thermometer shows zero degrees. 1,100 kilometres away lies Vemdalen ski resort, an entirely different landscape with a metre of snow, a tempe-rature of –8° C and unbeatable skiing conditions. We long to be there!

By taking the Snow Train, which is about to depart, we will be in Vemdalen already tomorrow morning! And we avoid 1,000 kilometres of exhausting driving. We will travel by train virtually the whole way, transferring to a coach at Röjan for the last twenty kilometres to Vemdalen ski resort, where we are staying.

Once there, local ski buses are available to take us between the various ski lift systems in the

area, which means we can go wherever we want to, regardless of where we choose to stay.

Before the Snow Train was launched in time for the 2012/2013 season, ski travellers often chose to travel to Vem-dalen by car or bus. The initia-tive for the Snow Train came from Destination Vemdalen, who wanted to make it easier for their guests to get there. Through cooperation with In-landsbanan and Tågab, among

others, it is now possible to take the night train from Malmö via Gothenburg or the day train departing from Stockholm.

The Snow Train service for the 2013/2014 season starts in December and runs until the end of April 2014.
