Hello!

I would like to thank all the artists that were selected for the first Summer Issue of Iniciativa Colectiva. I find that we are getting more and more talent as we continue on this endeavor and I find myself getting inspiration from all of you.

In this issue you will find new interviews from our Featured Artists which include Fontaine Anderson from South Australia, as well as Jorge Gonzalez Burgos from Argentina and Nicolas Gonzalez from Chile.

It is very gratifying to know people enjoy the work that is being showcased in IC and we will continue to strive for the best.

Don’t forget to keep sending your submissions for the first ever IC ANNUAL , a book which will showcase the best of the work presented in IC throughout this year as well as new work that you continue to submit. The book will be printed and distributed throughout various Art Fairs and during Miami Beach’s ART BASEL in December.

1. What type of medium do you work with and explain how you use it? (Paint, design, photography, collage)I use coloured inks, markers and coloured pencil to create my pictures. I usu-ally start with a black ink outline and then I fill it in with tiny little lines and areas of grey wash or pattern.

2. What was your main interest in producing this artwork, or is there a state-ment you wanted to convey?I am always thinking and dreaming of strange things and I guess I just wanted to record these images. The pictures have no great meaning, they just reflect what I am thinking or feeling at a certain time.

3. Tell us about your creative process, do you have any rituals, routines you follow? How does your artwork come together? (Do you use found objects, image banks, etc)When an idea for a picture comes into my head I sketch it out really roughly them I get into my inks and start mapping it out. I don’t usually bother too much with rough sketches I let the picture evolve as it is being made. I have found that this is often the best way to work ,as too much preparation can make the process really boring. I usually hate the picture all throughout it’s creation I only fall in love with it when it is complete!

4. How did you get started with your artistic career?I was shit at math and science!

5. What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments?Getting some positive remarks about my work from my heroes: Deanne Ch-

euck, Daisy Devillenue and Jonathan Zawanda. I lack confidence in my work so it helped me very much to receive positive feedback from some amazing and talented designers and artists.

6. Where does your inspiration come from? Or is there any particular movement, artwork or artist you find yourself influenced by?I am inspired by beautiful things: Egyptian gods, dung beetles, cabbage leaves, black berries, the circus, Japanese kimono’s, kettle’s, clouds, totem poles and big sleeves.

7. How do you see yourself five years from now? How do you see your artwork evolving from now?Hopefully a better more successful artist – more confident and less cynical. I can’t tell how my work will evolve I can only wait and see.

1. What type of medium do you work with and explain how you use it? (Paint, de-sign, photography, collage)I work on a digital platform, without previous sketches. I solely use Painter, which I consider the best software that has artists tools. I don’t use the Wacom tablet or Genius, only my mouse that has a trackball (the ones with the ball underneath.) I always begin drawing the forms in black, which gives the drawings consistency and strength to the colors which I later add on top. Finally, I draw the background, first in black, I add the colors on top and later the textures.

2. What was your main interest in producing this artwork, or is there a statement you wanted to convey?These pieces form part of my most personal portfolio, with things I’ve done for myself or in my free time, which is not that much, but they are unique moments that give me the freedom to do whatever I want, without any parameters or deadlines and they are also what identifies me.

3. Tell us about your creative process, do you have any rituals, routines you follow? How does your artwork come together?(Do you use found objects, image banks, etc)My creative process begins in the morning, I start thinking for a while in bed befo-te I get up. Music is sometimes important but it can also be counterproductive and it may influence completely my state of mind at the moment I begin to illustrate. It may be ok for a little while, but not for long. My TV may be on all day as it doesn’t bother me in the least and it keeps me company. I only get distracted with Anthony Boudain or witth Narda Lepes. At midday I stop and go to sleep for about an hour, this nap is fundamental for me, to rest my head for a while. When I wake up I have strong coffee and even better with a piece of chocolate. More into the afternoon I have mate (yerba mate tea.) I discovered that waking up early to work gets more things done than starting late and going to sleep late but in winter it’s hard to keep

the habit. I work directly on my PC. I try to research little as to create from zero, but the influ-ences are always there.

4. How did you get started with your artistic career?While studying Graphic Design in the city of Rosario, I had also started to take courses at the Universidad de Bellas Artes and I had gotten very excited but I had to leave the school because I couldn’t handle both careers at the same time, along with working at a magazine distribuitor. I decided to leave Bellas Artes and I finished Graphic Design but I didn’t feel complete. I traed to study advertising but I also stoped and later started to study Cinematography and alter I signed up, I finished a movie in video and went to live to Buenos Aires to return to my job as a Graphic Designer. At the same time, I began showing my illustration work to the publishers and in 2 months I was commissioned to illustrate my first book and from that moment to this day I have illustrated almost 50 books.

5. What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments?That people had faith in me and gave me the opportunity to illustrate the re-release of “Gi-raluna” by Gudiño Kieffer which I feel is a great accomplishment.

6. Where does your inspiration come from? Or is there any particular movement, artwork or art-ist you find yourself influenced by?I feel a change in respect to my creative process. At first, my ideas came in a visual representa-tion but now, and since a while back, they come in a phrase, ideas almost written down to which later I have to morph into an illustration. In the mornings, as soon as I wake up, it’s when my cre-ativity is at full speed. These phrases that tell me things begin to take shape into visual images in my head as I prepare my breakfast and finally, the ideas come to life when I begin to work in front of my pc and I materialize what I imagined. Rarely do I leave an illustration incomplete to finish it later or another day, I generally begin and finish the piece the same day. My influences are always present: Max Cachimba, Mark Ryden, Jean- Luc Godard, Fontanarrosa.

7. How do you see yourself five years from now? How do you see your artwork evolving from now?Well, I have some dreams I wish to achieve: Illustrating an alluminum can, create a vinyl toy with one of my characters, writing my own books, but it will probably be in more than 5 years…there are things that I would like to try out but need more time, such as motion design.

1. What type of medium do you work with and explain how you use it?(Paint, design, photography, collage)I work with traditional photography, film based. I don’t like to manipulate things; I just like things the way they are. I like to play with ambient and studio lights on real locations, the mix of these two lights allows me to create different moods. I always try to get everything in only one shoot, that is my goal, if is not in the negative, it’s not in my final picture. All my work was shot in spring at twilight on real locations around London. (Elephant and Castle, Acton town, Holborn and Bayswater.)

2. What was your main interest in producing this artwork, or is there a statement you wanted to convey?My main interest was to explore the idea of transformation of the everyday and see how impossible things can happen as part of reality.

3. Tell us about your creative process, do you have any rituals, routines you follow? How does your artwork come together? (Do you use found objects, image banks, etc)Most of the time I see the photograph before I take the picture, always I’m study-ing different locations, trying to see the potential narrative of the space. When I’m there, I start to imagine what can happen and what can be interesting for the story, This is the way in which I construct my pictures.

4. How did you get started with your artistic career?Quitting my job as an Art director in an advertising agency.

5. What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments?I think it was when I quit my job and I came to London to do a MA in Photography.

6. Where does your inspiration come from? Or is there any particular movement, artwork or artist you find yourself influenced by?For this particular project, my inspiration was the book “100 years of Solitude” by Gabriel Gar-cia Marquez, The interesting thing is that the pictures don’t resemble the book, because all images were made out of the parts of the book that are not written, if not what we imagine from the text. My work is very much influenced by the post expressionist painters, such us Otto Dix, Christian Schad, Georg Schrimpf, Georg Grosz, Alexander Kanoldt.

7. How do you see yourself five years from now? How do you see your artwork evolving from now?Difficult to say, but I would love to explore cinema. The photography and direction of films is something that I find very interesting. I will like to push my work in that direction.
