Welcome
Aloha -
Thank you for your interest in Mauna Loa Helicopters and helicopter training programs. The
school is on three of the pristine tropical islands of Hawaii. Here you’ll find favorable weather
conditions for nearly 365 flyable days per year, scenic valleys, expansive beaches, exotic rain
forests, offshore operations, challenging mountain and ridge flying…even an erupting volcano.
Hawaii has it all.
The cross country flights are conducted between airports, designated landing areas and between
the various islands. During your training, you will have opportunities to practice bush, rugged
terrain, mountain and ridgeline landings. Night flight training is included in our private and
commercial pilot courses. We work to offer the amenities of larger helicopter flight schools
and yet maintain the personal level of instruction that makes smaller schools so special.
Our experienced instructors are the greatest asset of Mauna Loa Helicopters. They are profes-
sionals who attend annual recurrency training and take great pride in assuring that each student
receives the individual attention needed to become a professional helicopter pilot.
Mauna Loa Helicopters is an FAA Part 141 approved school ensuring structured and efficient
flight training. We are authorized by U.S. Immigration to issue I-20 forms to foreign students
to obtain M-1 student visas. Mauna Loa Helicopters is a VA approved school.
Please write, e-mail, fax or call if you have questions.
We will be glad to assist you in any way we can.
I hope to fly with you soon in paradise!
Sincerely,
Ben Fouts, President

Professional Pilot Program
Our Professional Pilot Program consists of five ratings and certificates: Private, Commercial,
Instrument, Certified Flight Instructor and Certified Instrument Instructor. Pilots graduate with
about 200 hours total flight time. Mauna Loa Helicopters offers two timelines for the Profes-
sional Pilot Program: students enrolled in the full time program are given a maximum of 12
months for completion; students enrolled in the part time program are given a maximum of 24
months to complete their training.
The Professional Pilot Program
helps you qualify for your first job
instructing at a flight school oper-
ating Robinson R-22s and R-44s.
Once you build time, you’ll be
eligible for a number of rewarding
and exciting jobs as a professional
pilot. The following are average
hours and average costs. Please
note that some students may
require more instruction and some
less.
Estimated
Training Costs
200 flight hours
(175 R-22/ 25 R-44)
30 simulator hours*
120 ground training hours
Average total cost: $80,000
Average cost includes books, exam
fees, and applicable state tax, but
does not include living expenses
or transportation costs.
* Simulator time that exceeds 30 hours
will be given at no charge.

Individual Courses
Mauna Loa Helicopters offers these individual courses:
Private (PVT)
Commercial (COM)
Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)
Instrument (IFR)
Certified Flight Instrument
Instructor (CFI-I)
Night Vision Goggle course (NVG)
Airline Transport Pilot (ATP)
The FAA minimum ground and flight re-
quirements for PVT, COM and IFR are listed
below. CFI, CFII and ATP do not have
minimum hour or ground school require-
ments. Students enrolled in our Professional
Pilot Program will generally complete the
majority of the CFI course during the Com-
mercial course and the majority of the CFII
course during the IFR course. For students coming to complete CFI, CFI-I or ATP, the hours needed
for flight and ground school vary depending upon the student’s preparation.
“My training at Mauna Loa Helicopters was an awesome experience. I came here from Switzer-land without any knowl-edge about flying at all, and I wasn't really sure if I would be able to make it. But now I have my private pilot's license, I still can't believe it!” ~ Beatrix Koch Former student

Individual Courses
NVG Training
We are proud to now offer Night Vision Goggle
(NVG) training in collaboration with Night
Flight Concepts, the industry’s highly respected
provider of night vision goggles, training and
maintenance. The Mauna Loa NVG course pro-
vides in-depth academic curriculum and opera-
tional flight training in order to increase safety,
situational awareness, and mission operation ca-
pabilities during night flight.
The training course encompass the most up-to-
date technology, information, techniques, and
procedures for implementing NVGs in new or
pre-existing aviation programs. The four-day
NVG course, designed to address the requirements of law enforcement agencies, air medical/
rescue services, military organizations, and government task force agencies, comprises 16 hours
of ground school and six hours of NVG flight training. The cost is $8,300.
Long Line Course
Mauna Loa seeks to give you the tools you need to become a success in whatever helicopter
career path you choose. Our long line course provides training for the commercially rated
helicopter pilot through a combination of ground instruction and flight instruction. The course
comprises ten hours of ground instruction and 15 hours of flight instruction. The ground
instruction consists of training in the preflight of aircraft and equipment (lines, remote hook,
swivel, nets, etc.), load description, delivery area, mission parameters, performance planning,
site picture (scan, depth perception, situational awareness, and focus), and common hazards.
The flight portion of the training employs a 100’ line and focuses on centering a load, side to
side control, 360-degree swing control and normal takeoff and landings. The two week course
costs $8,000.
7
Helicopter training schools
generally quote training prices
based on the minimum num-
ber of hours required by the
CFR, or Code of Federal
Regulations. While it’s possi-
ble to complete the various
courses within the minimums,
most people require more
flight hours to complete their
training. Variables include
how frequently you train, how
dedicated you are to your
course of study, how often
you fly the more expensive
R-44, whether or not you
include additional training
such as External Load Flying,
and other factors.
There are no secrets in pricing
the R-22 and R-44: opera-
tional costs and fuel costs are
pretty much standard across
the country. Mauna Loa’s
pricing is equal to or less than
most reputable flight schools.
You may find a lower hourly
rate quoted elsewhere but
often these rates incorporate
other fees and expenses. You
will not find any hidden fees
at a Mauna Loa Helicopters
Training School. Additional
expenses you can anticipate
include books and supplies,
medical exam and written test
expenses and, of course, flight
examination fees.

Please complete this Enrollment Questionnaire and submit with the completed Enrollment
Application. Please attach another page if you need more space.

Weight Restrictions
As a pilot your weight is very important. Smaller aircraft such as the Robinson R22 have a limited weight capacity.
If the pilot or student weigh close to the maximum weight per seat (240 lbs) the amount of fuel you can carry is
limited, which limits flight times. It is important that your weight not exceed 200 lbs as an instructor in order for you
to be able to fly with students of all sizes.
Please tell us your weight in lbs.
If you weigh over 200 lbs do you feel confident that you could healthily reach 200 lbs by
graduation?
Flexibility
Most students who wish to become a professional helicopter pilot will, upon graduation, work as an instructor either
with Mauna Loa Helicopters or another flight school, until they have reached 1,000 hours flight time. This may take
one to two years, at which point it is time to find a job within the industry. Most pilots will find their first job either
in the Gulf of Mexico flying transport to the oil rigs or in Alaska flying tours. Because of this it is important to un-
derstand that your life may be transient for several years until you are experienced enough to seek out the jobs in the
areas you may wish to live. The good news is that most jobs in the Gulf are one to two weeks on and one to two
weeks off, and the jobs in Alaska are seasonal for summer only; so it is possible to live elsewhere and commute.
A note about foreign students: Foreign student wishing to become professional pilots face a few challenges as their
careers begin. Mauna Loa Helicopters is authorized to issue the I-20 forms to foreign students to obtain M-1 student
visas. The M-1 visa allows you to attend school with Mauna Loa Helicopters and to work as an instructor at Mauna
Loa Helicopters. It does not allow you to work for any other company in the U.S.. While we try to hire as many of
our graduates as possible, if we are unable to hire a foreign student they must find another option to work in the U.S.
In addition, most foreign instructors will work in other parts of the world after instruction.
Are you willing and able to relocate yourself and/or your family to Hawaii and then be flexible to
move for several years after graduation if jobs require?
If you will be taking out a loan to pay for training, are you confident you will be able to repay that
loan?
Are you prepared to work for a year or more as an instructor?
12
Enrollment Questionnaire

Do you suffer from motion sickness?
Do you have a fear of heights?
What first sparked your interest in aviation?
Do you have any aviation experience?
What are your long term goals as a helicopter pilot?
Do you feel you could excel in a self motivated program?
Do you feel confident in your study habits and ability to comprehend and retain information
pertaining to mechanical systems, weather, aerodynamics, regulations, and instructional methods?
Please explain why you want to be come a pilot.
