IntroductionIntroduction Becoming more environmentally friendly as a business can be

complicated. One of the major impediments to greening a business is the huge number of programs available and the very complicated process many have to go through to evaluate what makes sense for their business. We want to make your first steps simple and easy.

This presentation is intended to be a very basic start-up kit for those who may want to begin saving money by greening your business. It is not intended to be comprehensive or sophisticated. This is simply a guide to get you started.

This presentation, in PowerPoint format, can help cut through all the complicated decision-making to assist any business “going green” by offering simple, easy, free or affordable, steps to getting started being more environmentally friendly, and saving money at the same time.

For some, this may seem over-simplified. We understand that many of our business members are well beyond these basic steps. This presentation is for those who have just begun considering the implications of being less impactful on the environment.

For some, this may seem over-simplified. We understand that many of our business members are well beyond these basic steps. This presentation is for those who have just begun considering the implications of being less impactful on the environment.

We have organized the presentation in three steps: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced.

Basic Steps are those that have no cost or very little and can be done without the help of a technician.

Intermediate Steps are those that may require some technical expertise to evaluate, implement and install.

Advanced Steps are those that require technical expertise to install and may be costly.

Finally, at the end of the presentation we provide contact information for those Pasadena Chamber members who may be able to provide the expertise to help you evaluate and install whatever measures you feel are appropriate to help you save money as you make your business more environmentally friendly.

We hope you find this presentation helpful.

Lighting: Lighting: Turn off lights or other

equipment when not in use.

Switch out incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent bulbs (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs): You can get them at any hardware store! CFLs save 75% less energy and LEDs use 90% less.

Adjust lighting to your actual needs; let the sun shine in and use free "daylighting”.

Do not use unnecessary light and do not “overlight”-try turning off a bank of fluorescents and see if you notice a difference in light levels.

Water: Water: Fix leaks - small leaks can add up to

significant extra costs.Reduce the temperature of the hot water.

It is recommended your hot water be set at no more than 120°F.

If you have landscaping, water appropriately for your vegetation and make sure you aren’t watering the street or sidewalk.

Use a broom to sweep your sidewalk or driveway. If you must use water to clean outdoor areas, consider purchasing a water broom rather than hosing off the area.
