DESCRIPTION

This was for a little talk I gave at CUNY's City College to ad students in the excellent Media and Comm Arts program.

TRANSCRIPT

finding a jobin advertising

used to mean assembling spec print ads

a few tv spots

oh and don’t forget radio

and zipping them all into a fake leather art case. That was your “book”

which you’d send around to agencies, one by one

and hope for a call

But the world moves a lot faster now

and the ad world with it. And creative directorsare looking to your generation for brilliance

to help them promote brands in a web 2 world many still don’t understand

on facebook

on youtube

on twitter

even out of home, oops OOH

Which means you have to come up with ideas that can live not only in traditional space

but digital space, too

which is where you can also find a lot of insider info

about where and how to apply

and how not to apply.

so you won’t write cover letter train wrecks like this

"I want to take this time to point out the weakness of my resume.”

(One hundred percent honest. One hundred percent not getting the job.)

or this.

"Hi my name is ____ i attached my resume please look it over and give me a call thank

you”(You can't be bothered to capitalize or write a complete cover letter, but

I'm to presume you'll be busting your chops working for me?)

You’ll do a website that demonstrates your grasp of interconnectivity

write a great cover letter, be on time for your interview and

get a great job and live happily ever after.

for moral support along the way,@AdBroad
