The Patient Consent Protocol

Patient consent is required for the passing on of any patient data between carers.

The Patient Consent Protocol

An easy way to ensure that your practice obtains consent for all transactions of patient data, including ETP, Pathology and X-rays, is to insert the following sentence into your practice Terms and Conditions:

“we send all our prescriptions electronically and may view the dispensing history of any of your prescriptions”

To obtain consent from existing patients, simply mention to the patient that your practice uses e-prescriptions on their next visit:

“I am going to send this prescription off electronically and I may look at the dispensing history as part of the ongoing management of your condition. We now do this as a standard part of our care management at this Practice.”
