Panaji: A Vasai family’sdream holiday turned into anightmare after a petty scuf-fle during breakfast ended ina violent assault withswords and knives around2km from Goa’s capital of Pa-naji. The narrow and usual-ly calm streets of Mercesturned into a battlegroundon Wednesday as the buslo-ad of tourists fought off fourarmed men—all with crimi-nal records.

Cops have arrested threeof the attackers while the fo-urth is on the run. An FIRhas been registered at OldGoa police station under In-dian Penal Code sections forattempted murder, wrongfulrestraint, endangering lifeor personal safety of othersand criminal intimidation.

At least 20 people were in-jured, including a five-year-old and one of the accused.While the driver of the Ma-harashtra-registered vehi-cle and two other tourists suf-fered fractures, none of theinjuries were critical eno-ugh to require hospitaliza-

tion, said police officials.Eyewitnesses said troub-

le began at Hotel Cafe Hobleat 9:50am where three of theVasai residents were havingbreakfast and Lawrence Di-as, the prime accused, wasseated behind them. Whenthe arm of one of the touristsbrushed against Dias, an ar-gument ensued and he slap-ped 58-year-old Lahu Ghode-kar. In retaliation, the tou-rists shoved and abused Di-as. “The fist fight wasresolved by the hotel mana-ger but the goonda threate-ned to bring his friends,” sa-id a waiter at the cafe. “It wasa small issue but he said he

would call his friends andshow them their place.”Sha-ken over the fist fight, the tou-rists got into their bus as theyplanned to return to Mum-bai. Police officials, who we-re on site, said Dias alongwith the three other accusedcame with a sword and chop-pers to attack the tourists.

The four accused havebeen identified as Vishal Go-latkar, Dias, Suraj Shetyeand Sai Kundaikar, who is onthe run.

“One of the accused snat-ched the bus keys from thedriver while the others pel-ted stones on the front glassand windows, causing serio-

us injuries to some of thepassengers,” said North GoaSP Kartik Kashyap.

“The driver was pulledout and all four persons as-saulted him with the inten-tion of killing him,” saidKashyap. The women on thebus tried to intervene, pro-mpting the four accused tothem too. “We had said sorry.Why did he have to slap us?Why hit our women? Mumbai: Not a single day of “special remission”was given to actor Sanjay Dutt inthe 1993 serial blasts case and the Ma-harashtra government is ready todefend in the Bombay High Court itsaction of releasing him early, a Ho-me department official said on Wed-nesday.

“Sanjay Dutt's release is exactly asper the rules and jail manual. Not a single day of spe-cial remission has been awarded to him,” the officialsaid on condition ofanonymity.

The Bombay HChad on June 12 so-ught justificationfrom the state go-vernment for its de-cision to grant theactor early releasefrom prison. “Casesinvolving high pro-file inmates are especially sensitive considering in-tense scrutiny they are subjected to. There is no possi-bility that even an iota of favouritism was shown tohim,” the official said.

A division bench of justices R M Sawant and Sad-hana Jadhav had issued the direction on a public in-terest litigation challenging regular paroles grantedto Dutt when he was serving his sentence.

Dutt was convicted of possession of an AK rifle,which was part of the consignment used in the 1993terror attack and was sentenced to five years in jailunder the Arms Act.

During his imprisonment, Dutt was granted paro-le of 90 days in December 2013 and later again for 30days. He was let out in February 2016, eight monthsearly, on account of his good conduct. AGENCIES

Mumbai: A city hospital hasrefused to remove a hoarding itput up about cut practice despi-te the Indian Medical Associa-tion’s (IMA) displeasure.

The IMA had written to thehospital, asking it to remove thehoarding near the airport thatsaid, ‘Honest Opinion. No Com-mission to Doctor’. Dr Rama-kant Panda, vice chairman ofthe Asian Heart Hospital thatput up the hoarding, said he hadreceived calls from IMA mem-bers as well in this regard. “Butwe also got positive feedbackfrom many young doctors whoare unable to set up their ownpractice because of cut practi-ce,” he said. On Tuesday, the he-art institute wrote to the Maha-rashtra Medical Council with38 doctors signing the letter.

Dr Jayesh Lele of state IMAsaid his association is againstcut practice but the hoarding isnothing but an advertisement.

“The ethical rules of adverti-sing should be applied here.How can an ad blame othersand suggest that it is the onlyhospital being ethical?’’ askedDr Lele. He said the nationalIMA as well as several other me-dical associations will take upthe issue further.

Meanwhile, Dr Sanjay Nag-ral, transplant surgeon and edi-torial board member of the In-dian Journal of Medical Ethics,said cut practice is medicine’sworst kept secret.

“Cut practice is widely pre-valent. It is a public-interest is-sue because it affects the cost ofcare; doctors and hospitals fac-tor in the commission whilemaking a patient’s bill. Moreo-ver, it also affects the quality ofcare. It isn’t the best specialist

who is recommended to you,but the one who pays the big-gest commission,” he said. Hesaid cut practice has become abigger problem than before. “Itis not only widely prevalent, ithas changed from being a pay-ment from one doctor to anot-her doctor to assume an indust-rial proportion. Now, hospitalsare doing it,’’ said Dr Nagral.“Cut practice has now becomethe centre of healthcare.”

The Asian Heart Institu-te’s letter to the MaharashtraMedical Council said, “We ap-peal to you to aggressively pe-ruse and eliminate this unet-hical practice. All doctors sho-uld unite to curb this menaceand will be happy to extendour full support to MMC inthis endeavour.”

Mumbai: Two persons weredetained on suspicion for themurder of model-actor KritikaChaudhary (27), which Ambolipolice suspect happened on thenight on June 7, after she spoketo her parents and brother overthe phone in Haridwar.

Police also suspect the accu-sed made sexual advances befo-re killing her.

The building watchmanwas detained by cops, while thecrime branch detained the vic-tim’s friend on Wednesday. Butpolice said the murder does notseem to have been planned.

Thane: Two autorickshaw drivers werenabbed early on Wednesday for allegedly mo-lesting and assaulting a 23-year-old woman lastweek. The duo—Santosh Lokhande (38) and La-hu Ghogre (49) who have faced arrests in thepast—were traced by Thane police following anunprecedented manhunt and confirmation oftheir identities by the survivor. Madhukar Pan-dey, joint commissioner of police, announcedthat the case, which had sent shockwaves inThane, has been cracked.

The duo is believed to have confessed to thecrime and reportedly said that they had plottedit all and decided to rob any female passengerwho would sit in Ghogre’s vehicle. While

Ghogre, a resident of Dynaneshwar Nagar inWagle Estate, was in the driver’s seat, Lok-hande, a resident of Louis Wadi, pretended to bejust another passenger occupying a seat in theshare auto.

“They claim that their motive was to rob thepassenger of her gold chain and other valuablesas Lokhande had defaulted on the EMI for hisauto loan. Ghogre, too, was in need of money asthe two were regular drinkers and blew most oftheir earnings on alcohol. We are questioningthem to find out why did they assault the wom-an passenger and then push her out of thespeeding auto,” said an investigating officer.

A top police official said the first break-through in the case was a tip-off.
