For through the Spirit, we eagerly await by faith, the

righteousness for which we hop

Righteousness by Good Works• Righteousness by Our Own Effort–based on obeying the Law– ...doing good ...abstaining from bad deeds

–common to all other religions in the world

Legalism• giving up freedom in Christ • ...entangling oneself in a yoke of

bondage• ...become estranged from

Christ, ... • ... fallen from grace.

you won’t get in that way..

• For I tell you that unless your

righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven

Difference–Justification - wholly God’s work–Sanctification - we work with God• Philippians 2:12-13

–continue to work out your salvation with fear and

trembling, 13 for it is God who

works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Repent of our ‘good deeds’

• I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having

a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith

A Crown of Righteousness
