award for the fall foot-ball preview, the spe-cial section was a proj-ect involving all sevennewspapers. Becauseo f c on te st r ules , itcould only be entered

by one newspaper. In his comments onWright’s column, judgeBob Stewart, Directoro f the E .W. S cr ip psSchool of Journalism atOhio University, stated:“Wright touches onthree topics, rangingfrom a proposed (byh im) tak eo ff o n theHousewives TV show, alocal wedding and anindividual being recog-n iz ed for a ss is tingn ee dy c om mu ni tymembe rs . Wr ig ht’swriting has just theright combination of sincerity and informa-

tion to give the readera strong sense of his —that is Wright’s — con-victions and value sys-t em . Wr ig ht h el psSpringboro Sun’s read-ers learn about won-derful local role mod-els, as well as a much-needed chuckle.”

The special sections  judges from BowlingGreen State Universitystated the fall sportspreview “stood abovethe crowd in severalrespects.”

“The inside coverillustrates the northedition and the southedition covers. Thefirst article is not abouta particular highschool team, but anoverview, highlightingthe ‘big games’ of theseason, thus setting thetone that this specialsection is about foot-ball, not just individualteams,” the judges stat-ed.

“The consistent andlogical layout for eachteam allows the reader

to find the informationthe y wan t e as ily —including the win/lossr ec or d for the p as tthree years, the resultsfrom the previous yearand this year’s sched-ule,” the judges contin-ued.

“The editors made asmart choice when theydecided to use a photoof one player ratherthan the large photo of an entire team. The lat-ter rarely works unless

you can give it a half page because if usedany smaller, the photosis just a mass of greywith faces barely dis-tinguishable. Jumpswere easy to follow.Extras at the back wereinformative and fit thesubject matter. Writingwas good,” the judgessaid.

TCN ManagingEditor Terry Bavercommended the edito-rial staff for its accom-

p li sh men ts i n t hi syear’s contest.

“We have a staff of professionals who arededicated in producingthe kinds of stories thatare of interest to ourreaders,” Baver said.“We also are fortunateto have individuals inour communities whoare willing to sharetheir talents and theirstories so we may passthem along to our read-ers.”
