WHAT’S THE COMMITMENT? Honors/AP courses will require:

▪ Challenging reading

▪ Increased amount of writing

▪ More outside of class work – plan on an hour/night

▪ Depth in critical/analytical thinking

▪ Rigorous extensions of standards

▪ A strong work ethic

▪ An interest in or aptitude for the subject

IS MY CHILD READY? Strong reader – willing to work at hard(er)

reading

Teacher or counselor recommendation

Performance on standardized tests (SOL/PSAT/SAT/ACT)

Commitment to class and follow-through

Strong work ethic

Strong study habits

PUSHING VS. CHALLENGINGPUSHING IS STRESSFUL; CHALLENGING IS HEALTHY

ASK:▪ Whose goal is it?

▪ No one is an expert in EVERYTHING

▪ In what subjects is your child interested?

▪ How is your child unique?

▪ Jack of all trades, master of none

HOW MANY AP & HONORS CLASSES DOES MY STUDENT NEED TO TAKE?

IT DEPENDS ON THE STUDENT

COLLEGES WANT TO SEE PROGRESSION/CONSISTENCY OF

RIGOR IN A SUBJECT AREA, NOT EVERY SUBJECT AREA

CONSIDER THE WHOLE STUDENT – EXTRACURRICULARS AS

WELL

BALANCE AVOID STRESS
