GUEST SPEAKER IN GRADE FIVE – CARTOON ART!
O n 11th November, 2014, we had a guest speaker – Mr. Rohit, who is a freelance editorial cartoonist with ‘Tarun Bharat’. We invited him as part of our unit on art. His main lesson was
on the creative process and how to make artistic work and on the function of cartoons in art. He showed the students the process to create and even engaged them in cartoon drawing activities. At the end of the lesson, students were able to make characters based on the people in their immediate context. He was very efficient and the students really enjoyed having him around! – Ms Beth Atiavila
I drew a cartoon of Arjun! I didn’t even know I could create a cartoon that looked so much like someone!
Mr. Rohit was super friendly and so much fun to have in our class. He made me discover the artist in me!
– Sairaj Menon
I never really paid much thought to cartoon in newspapers, except for the funny ones. I learnt today
that cartoons can be a serious medium of communication. They can contain so much information.
I also now understand how and why some people are creative than others. Luckily we now know the
process of creativity. I had lots of fun! – Tia Shetty

GRADE FIVE TRIP TO TAO ART GALLERY
O n 10th November 2014, grade five students went to Tao art gallery as part of their “going
further” stage of their Unit of Inquiry cycle based on the topic, art as a form of expression. The
exhibition in place at that time was themed “Cricket” and was done by a British artist called Christina
Pierce. She welcomed us and took us around the gallery to take a look at her work. She told us that
she was inspired by her cricket playing son to do the collection about the sport. She also explained
her techniques, and creative processes. She answered all the questions the students had for her. At
the end of our tour, the gallery’s management gave the students candy and very ‘artsy’ bookmarks. It
was a very successful trip and a lot was learnt in the most fun way!
Ms. Beth – Grade 5 homeroom teacher
T he trip was absolute fun! We learnt so many things about creating art and were very lucky to
have a chance to meet the artist, Ms. Pierce. She was very friendly and answered all my many
questions! My favourite art work was the painting of Mr. Sachin Tendulkar, one of the greatest
cricket players ever!
- Uchita Sampat
W hen we went for the trip, I knew it would be fun but not as much fun as we really had! We
enjoyed the whole experience and even on our way, we saw a lot of artistic things. Designer
cars, buildings and even the sea link bridge that we went over. Art was all around us! The paintings at
Tao were especially nice because they were all about a sport we all love – cricket! I wish to be able to
express myself through art like Ms. Pierce did with her cricket paintings!

FROM BROADWAY TO JAZZ
O n the 18th of October 2014, RBK international Academy hosted - ‘The Annual Western Music concert’ wherein all the grades from PYP, MYP and DP performed beautiful songs. Our western
Music teachers, Felix Hug and Sanjay Metri have worked very hard in making this event so very successful , by training our students in vocal as well as instrumental music . Children not only played the instruments but also gave their vocals like thorough professionals. The theme was ‘Broadway to Jazz’ where in songs were carefully selected covering different genres of music to bring about versatility.
Let us take a peek at the performances.

M onths of rigorous hard work and determination helped the students put together a great show. Parents of all the students were enthusiastic and cheered all the way for all the
performances. Teachers took care of all the arrangements- from back stage to green rooms, attending every parent, till saying a goodbye after the concert ended. This concert would not have been possible without an amazing team work of Students, Parents, and Teachers. The house-keeping staff played a vital role in ensuring that everything was in place as per the requirements.

HALLOWEEN -A student’s reflection
H alloween is an old festival originating back more than 2000 years is celebrated in a number
of countries on 31st October. The traditional focus of All Hallows' Eve revolves around the
theme of using humour and ridicule to confront the power of death.
On 7th November 2014, the French students celebrated Halloween. It was initiated and organized
by French Teachers- Ms. Rashmi and Ms. Shraddha.
The celebration at our school was quite interesting. The 6th and 7th graders dressed as different
characters and monsters including pirates and vampires. They went to different classes with a lot of
enthusiasm and trick or treated the teachers. Similarly, from 8th grade to DP, students dressed up
with masks of horrifying beasts and movie characters. It was exciting and amusing to see each
other’s costumes and identify them.
I was dressed up as Bart Simpson from the Simpsons. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and would like
to thank my teachers for coming up with creative ideas, making a normal day at school extremely
wonderful.

SWACCHA BHARAT ABHIYAN; MY VIEW
I think Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan promoted by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, is really
important because it educates and inculcates habit of cleanliness in people. People now feel
ashamed of throwing garbage or urinating and spitting in public. This will lead to better sanitation
and hygienic conditions for people.
While I was sweeping with my school friends for Swaccha Bharat Abhiyan, I felt that it is a good job
to clean the country, which will be the first step towards becoming a developed country. I
now realized that the people who do this job for us should be treated with respect.

MY REFLECTION
I nspired by our Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi our school had organised a cleaning
campaign, which was a part of Community and Service (C&S). We had to clean roads near the
school. This event was optional so few students did not participate and I was glad to be one of the
participants. I was proud to be a part of this campaign which was started by our Prime Minister. We
were provided with hygienic equipments to clean, then we started our action. Our school took all
the precautions and safety measures for us. We being children showed our responsibility towards
our country. After this activity we can take actions towards the people who litter on the roads. We
also became more aware and conscious about cleanliness. After taking actions in school I would
like to implement this in my society and make people aware about cleanliness. My friends and I
happily and willingly participated in this cleaning event at school because we were contributing
something for a better and cleaner India. I specially think if all the citizens of India think like us
and contributed a little bit then nobody can stop India to be one of the cleanest countries in the
world.

D ear Ma'am,
Today, on the 13th of November, our school participated in the Swachh Bharat Campaign. I
was excited when I heard we were joining Prime Minister Modi’s campaign against litter being
thrown on the on the roads. The students of grade 6, 7& 8 participated in this.
At 2:30 pm, we stepped out on the road outside our school and were handed disposable masks,
plastic gloves, and a broom. After our Management Representative, Arundhati Ma’am
demonstrated what to do, we all started sweeping the garbage to one side of the road. My friends
and I loved the fact that we could help Prime Minister Modi in his drive and I hope we can
continue with this.
We should all learn not to spit on the roads, litter, etc. One should always wait until one can find a
garbage bin and only then dispose it off. Another way to prevent garbage being thrown on the road
is that we should educate the hutment dwellers, beggars about the need to keep their surroundings
clean. After all, a ‘Clean Environment Is A Green Environment’.

T oday the 17th of November grades 6, 7 and 8 participated in the Prime Minister’s Swach Bharat
campaign. We were given a parent consent form which had to be submitted earliest by
Monday and latest by Wednesday. My grade was very happy after getting the form and all of them
wanted to come.
Today was the day we were waiting for it was the Swach Bharat campaign! I could feel the intensity
in the air we were just waiting for this activity. Our teacher Ms Swati brought us down grade wise.
The drive started with the students of grade 6 on the road near rear gate and then was followed by
the students of Grade 7 and 8 on the road near the other school gate.
Our Management Representative, Dr Arundhati Hoskeri made us wear the glove and a protective
mask to protect ourselves from dust and any possible infection. I was quite surprised when
Arundhati ma’am told us that many schools are participating in this drive in Mumbai but we were
the first school in Chembur area to do so. As I recall ma’am said “We are the pioneers.” And I also
agree with ma’am on that we all at RBKIA shall mean our slogan “Reach beyond Knowing.”
How Henry Ford said “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working
together is success.” so if we all work together India can become both clean and efficient!

SWACH BHARAT
O n 13 November we had an activity in which children of grade 6,7 and 8 had cleaned the road
which was just outside our school for our C&S.
Many of us took part in this activity. This was a very important activity because today we realized
how dirty and dusty the road was while sweeping and how important it is to keep our environment
clean.

DRAGON’S DEN – BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ACTIVITY
O ur Business Management teacher, Ms. Kinnari, introduced us to an interesting activity-
Dragon’s Den. Young entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and need of finance, approach
millionaire to invest in the venture. Dragon’s den is a worldwide show where 4 millionaires come
together and are ready to invest into a new business. My classmates and I had to undertake
research on a product that is completely viable and useful. On the 13th November 2014, we had to
present our products and try to convince the dragons. The dragons are comprised of students from
the class itself. My product was a Gaming Console and when I was presenting my product and
trying to convince the “Dragons” to invest into my product. When I was up there, it felt like I really
was in front of top businessmen and had to convince them and was really nervous. But I came
through and one of the “Dragons” invested into my product. I was relieved. Then the next
“upcoming businessman” had come and I was a Dragon. Even as a Dragon it took a lot of
concentration as you had to look at every fine aspect and not ignore a single detail because you are
putting your own money on the line for people who have not even started the business. All in All, it
was an amazing experience and it allowed me to improve and think harder regarding business
decisions.
