GREEN LIGHTING DESIGN CONCEPTS
Energy-efficient lighting design focuses on methods and materials that improve both quality and efficiency of lighting.
Energy-efficient lighting design principles include the following:
• Keep in mind that more light is not necessarily better. Human visual performance depends on light quality as well as quantity.
• Match the amount and quality of light to the performed function.
• Install task lights where needed and reduce ambient light elsewhere.
• Use energy-efficient lighting components, controls, and systems.
• Maximize the use of day lighting.

Day lighting is the controlled admission of natural light into a space through windows or Skylight .

Daylight AnalysisThe light entering a building may be considered as comprising three separate components1. Direct Sunlight2. Light from the diffuse Sky3.Diffusely reflected light from the ground and other buildings.

Compact fluorescent bulbs can be used to reduce the electricity usage. As an example, a 60-watt incandescent bulb can be replaced with an 11 to 15 watt compact fluorescent, for roughly a 76% reduction in demand.
CFLs and Full Spectrum Fluorescent Lamps LED Lighting
Uses 90% less electricity than incandescent. Because of LED's long life and additional up-front cost, they are suggested for difficult-to-service indoor and outdoor applications, and heavily used indoor areas.

INDOOR LIGHTING CONTROLS
Dimmer switches allow one fixture to serve several lighting functions, such as task lighting when at full illumination and decorative or safety lighting at lower settings. Dimming increases lamp life and saves energy because less electrical wattage is used.
Occupancy sensors detect activity within a certain area. They provide convenience by turning lights on automatically when someone enters a room. They reduce lighting energy use by turning lights off soon after the last occupant has left the room.
Timers are sometimes used to give unoccupied houses a lived in look. However, they are an ineffective control for anoccupied home because they do not respond to changes in occupant behaviour.
OUTDOOR LIGHTING CONTROLS
Photo sensors sense ambient light conditions and are used to prevent outdoor lights from operating during daylight hours.
Motion sensors automatically turn outdoor lights on when they are needed (when motion is detected) and turn them off a short while later. They are very useful for outdoor security and utility lighting provided by incandescent lamps.
