Welcome to your December newsletter. I am sure that you are all busy with seasonal preparations. I put my tree up at training class this week ready for the last c lasses and we had a few party games before having a good break for Christmas and the New Year. Ready for one I must say, the c lass numbers tail off at this time of year and it becomes too cold.
editor@godt.org.uk
It is also the time of year when we ref lect on the past year and make plans for the New Year ahead. We had a good year and one new venture was to do a school visit , which was wonderful and very rewarding. The New Year resolution is to contact the local schools to arrange more.
One of the first dates in our diaries wil l be Crufts . It was bri l l iant having our own stand this year and looking forward to meeting up with everyone again. I have received some great artic les for this issue and hope that you enjoy reading them. Please keep sending artic les and dates for the diary. We have some great member offers from Natural Instinct and Gencon. Merry Christmas & a Wooferful New year!

A Word from the ChairA Word from the ChairA Word from the ChairA Word from the Chair Sue Williams Bsc
The year 2014 has seen a busy and excit ing calendar of
events and developments. These have raised the profi le of
the Gui ld and wil l have long term positive impl ications for
the direction of the organisation in the future.
Firstly, the partnership set up between the Gui ld and Natural
Instinct. This amazing union provides an opportunity to
move forward together to promote our shared ethos and set
of objectives to enhance the knowledge of owners and improve the welfare of dogs. The importance of the union is
signif icant as working together provides a powerful publ ic
platform, the impact of which is l imitless. We look forward
to developing this innovative and excit ing working
relationship in 2015.
Secondly, In March we celebrated our f irst stand at Crufts.
It was bri l l iant how members worked together enhancing the
profi le of the gui ld through their contribution to the event
on the stand. I would l ike to thank Lisa Tennant, Sue Fryer, Jacquie Butl in, Debbie Cordingley, Maura Kiely, Tarryn
Peinke, Sam Herd, Natasha Col l ier, Al lyson Tohme, Col in
Spender and Malcolm Johnson, for their valuable support
over the 4 days, al l did an amazing job.
The success of our venture was reflected in the interest
generated in membership, our activit ies and in the ongoing
enquiries from members of the publ ic who wish to locate a
professional, kind, effective dog trainer whose competence is recognised by the gui ld.
Thirdly, at a pol it ical level, the power of the Guild.
This was highl ighted by the organisation being instrumental
in ensuring the governments National Occupational Standards were developed to be specif ic to dogs.
Our involvement proves just how important and influential
our organisation is. I am grateful to al l the members who
contributed whether they attended meetings, wrote letters
or expressed their support by sharing their opinions in the publ ic consultation process. For more detai l about this and
the signif icance see Sue Gi lmores excel lent piece in this
newsletter.

We approach 2015 with eager anticipation among the events
already planned Crufts and a landmark event Together
Canine. Detai ls to be released in due course.
I thank you all for your support in 2014 and I wish you al l a
fantastic Christmas and very happy New Year.

Uncover ing a leading company’s commitment to raw pet food
Natura l Inst inct is a company that ’s pass ionate about pets. I ts BARF d iet (B io log ica l ly Appropr iate Raw Food) fo l lows the motto ‘you are
what you eat ’ . Standing for B io log ica l ly Appropr iate Raw Food, BARF echoes the food eaten, hunted and scavenged by the ancestors of
today’s cats and dogs.
Founded in 2009, the company’s current 41-person team was formed around longstanding members and assoc iates in 2013. Anthony
Smal lman, head of sa les and market ing sa id: ‘Our f irm bel ie f is raw is best and feeding a d iet that mimics exact ly what they would eat
and are designed to eat in the wi ld is the best natura l opt ion. ’ I t was the search for wholesome food to he lp a s ick dog that or ig ina l ly
led the team to carry the company forwards. ‘Ever increas ing cases
o f chronic medica l issues and obes i ty found in vet pract ice re lated to poor nutr i t ion insp ired us to deve lop th is product fur ther , ’ expla ined
Anthony Smal lman. ‘ I t ’s for the pass ion and love of an imals that we a l l share. ’
So, what impact does B io logica l ly Appropr iate Raw Food have on cats
and dogs? The company has rece ived reports say ing uncomfortable sk in, coat, teeth and jo int condi t ions have been reso lved fo l lowing a

For Natura l Inst inct customer feedback is a v i ta l par t o f product ion. ‘We l is ten to customers f i rs t and foremost as nobody knows the
animals better than the ir owners. They g ive us a rea l ins ight into where there are gaps in the market and where we need to increase
product ion. We str ive to g ive our customers what they need, ’ sa id
Anthony Smal lman. ‘We work hard to cater for a l l and are prepared to go that extra mi le . ’

‘Our core Natura l Range caters for both dogs and cats ’ sa id Anthony

‘GROWTH HAS BEEN PHENOMENAL IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS. WE
HAVE DOUBLED OUR FACTORY SPACE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS AND WE ARE NOW LOOKING TO BUILD A MUCH LARGER, NEW FACTORY, ’
SAID ANTHONY SMALLMAN.
Make-Your-Own: I t ’s a b ig draw for pet owners; the chance to create the ir own rec ipe for a cat or dog. Natura l Inst inct is o f fer ing animal-
lovers the chance to contro l the content of their pets ’ food. Anthony Smal lman expla ins; ‘Our Pure Range cons ists o f pure meat, bone and

Getting Involved
I f you’re an industry profess ional , over the last s ix years you’ve no doubt met Natura l
Inst inct ’s team at any number o f events. The veter inary-approved range has been
showcased at some of the country ’s b iggest pet t rade shows. Natura l Inst inct has a lso
shown its support for other pet-re lated areas. ‘We were sponsors at Dog Fest 2014, with
Noe l F i tzpatr ick, the “Supervet” and organised by Brand Events, ’ says Anthony Smal lman.
‘We a lso sponsored two awards at the Mirror ’s
“Animal Hero Awards 2014” held in November

Natura l Inst inct credi ts the secret o f i ts success to three main areas.
The f i rs t is i ts h igh standards o f customer serv ices, and the second
is i ts commitment to the best qual i ty raw mater ia ls. However , Anthony Smal lman po ints out the most major factor has been ‘ lov ing
what we do and car ing about our staf f , customers and a l l an imals . ’
Natura l Inst inct ’s p lans for 2015 are a lready in p lace. I t hopes to see the raw food sector o f the pet industry cont inue to grow and
a ims to educate pet owners on the benef i ts of feeding raw. As a lways, i t w i l l be work ing c lose ly with vets and profess iona ls in the
canine and fe l ine wor ld but most important ly , Anthony Smal lman expla ined ‘Our focus wi l l a lways remain on qual i ty , va lue and
customer serv ice.
STOCKING NATURAL INSTINCT’S RANGES
‘Natura l Inst inct has a vast range of customers f rom the pet owners

The GoDT new film releases
http://youtu.be/pIdaYIhbym0
http://youtu.be/MkpU4xalvQc
These were the first releases following the pre production work over the last 6 months.
I hope our new facilities and equipment will become a new internet platform for GODT, CFBA
experts to deliver information to the general public on YouTube and their own web sites.
I have been setting up different film disciplines and location facilities with partners in London and
locally so that we have the best production houses and skills available. I have received much input
from Karl Holt of Darkline Productions. These behind the scenes people are rarely mentioned but
Karl Holt and his colleague Mark Hind are the people who teach and nurture our work and my
skills.
Some of you may wonder why the new GODT web site has not been launched. There are number
of reasons including costs but also I have had my home occupied by a film crew of nearly 5 months
making a cinema film for release next year. This has used up the filming skills of John Bowe who is
also the new GODT web designer. John will begin to complete the GoDT site in October and finish
by Christmas.
We will also be completing the 2 hour GODT Training Instructors Film this year if time allows.
Best Wishes
Colin Tennant

DISCOVER Dogs 2014 By Sue Wil l iams
Kal i has had a busy l i fe f i l led with fun packed adventures.
Th is week was perhaps her b iggest adventure yet when we went to Discover Dogs at Ear ls Court in London.
Our journey star ted on the Saturday when we trave l led f rom
Porthmadog to Lymm, Cheshire to meet up with Gui ld co l leagues and f r iends L isa Tennant and Debbie Cord ingley. Af ter transferr ing
luggage etc into the one vehic le and Kal i enjoy ing a good run around the f ie lds we set of f south bound.
Ka l i i s rea l ly content t rave l l ing th is has been down to a combinat ion
o f some fantast ic work ear ly on by her breeder , Corr ine and her
tour ing the UK with my d isp lay teams. She trave ls in a crate which I thoroughly recommend both for safety and comfort . When on a long
journey I l ike to g ive her something she can chew i f she wants, the p lay bones f rom Natura l Inst inct are per fect for this .
The t ime went quick ly chatt ing and catch ing up-you know what women are l ike when they haven’ t seen one another for a whi le !
Af ter a break at the serv ices for us a l l to stretch our legs we resumed our journey. About 10 minutes af ter re jo in ing the motorway
we heard a strange no ise and saw a lorry dr iver f lash ing h is l ights f rant ica l ly at us, so we pul led over on to the hard shoulder only to
f ind out we had a f lat tyre! We quick ly got out o f the car and I put Ka l i on her lead and we a l l re treated to safety as far back from the
motorway as poss ib le . Ka l i wears a wide f lat co l lar which is what I c l ipped her lead to when
we le f t the car but for extra safety in th is s i tuat ion I a lso used a s l ip
lead which meant not only d id I have two leads attached to her but a lso a co l lar she couldn’ t back out for added safety. Af ter this
inc ident I def in ite ly would recommend a lways having a s l ip lead easy to access in an emergency.
When Kal i was a l i t t le b i t younger she wasn’ t keen on traf f ic part icu lar ly large vehic les so I have been work ing with her s lowly
bui ld ing up her conf idence. This s i tuat ion proved how far she has come as she was tota l ly unfazed and ca lmly coped with the no isy
busy motorway traf f ic dur ing the ¾ hour wait for the RAC.
Af ter a l l the exc i tement we f ina l ly reached our hote l , a dog fr iendly Trave lodge. This presented another f i rs t for Ka l i , a stay in a hote l .
She took i t in her str ide and rea l ly enjoyed herse lf . As she is crate tra ined I set up her crate in the room and once I was ready to turn
in she happi ly went in and fe l l fast as leep. On Sunday, after d iver t ing to get a rep lacement tyre, we made our
way through the busy London streets to Ear ls Court. L isa d id a
fantast ic job of dr iv ing and expert ly weaving in and out o f the traf f ic! F ina l ly we had arr ived and we were a l l buzz ing with
exc i tement and look ing forward to meet ing up with the team from Natura l Inst inct.

On enter ing the exhib i t ion ha l ls i t immediate ly struck me how di f ferent the acoust ics were for Ka l i . At 5 months o ld a l though
gett ing qui te b ig, Ka l i i s s t i l l very much a baby. Ka l i i s used to busy environments but these have main ly been outs ide and she cer ta in ly
had never been in an environment l ike th is. I walked her around so
she could acc l imat ise and I could ensure she was re laxed and happy. This exper ience rea l ly h ighl ighted how important i t is to rea l ly know
your dog and to have a re lat ionship where by your dog respects and trusts you. A l l my foundat ion work pa id o f f Ka l i was conf ident and
a l though exc i ted she was l is ten ing to me and responding to my commands despite the d istract ions.

We quickly found Natura l Inst inct ’s impress ive, busy stand. Immediate ly we were greeted by the team, some fami l iar others not.
What stood out was everyone’s warm fr iendly manner and the ir genuine love of dogs. Af ter catch ups and introduct ions the
fo l lowing hours f lew by chatt ing to the publ ic and Kal i gett ing cuddles.
I rea l ly enjoyed the day and amongst the h ighl ights was spending
t ime on Natura l Inst incts stand with two young g ir ls who want to become dog tra iners. Ka l i was happy to be a demo pup as I showed
them how to teach a dog bas ic commands in a fun posi t ive manner . Ka l i then he lped by be ing a per fect pup and do ing the same for each
of them much to the ir de l ight!
At the end of the day Kal i was one t ired happy pup who s lept a l l the
way home. Thank you to the Natura l Inst inct team for organis ing such a fantast ic day. Thanks as we l l to L isa and Deb for not only
shar ing th is fun adventure but a lso he lp ing me with Ka l i , tak ing photos, f i lming and a l l the amaz ing other th ings you both d id to
ensure Kal i and I had a memorable , br i l l iant weekend. For more informat ion and to fo l low my journey with Kal i checkout

Member, Damian Riley’s fi lm debuts
I have recently been asked to source dogs (and various other animals I own)
for TV work.
Two spaniels were found for a body search scene in Scott and Bailey. A police
drama.
The same set designer who is a close friend of mine then asked me if I could
get hold of two German Shepherds for another three part drama called The
Trials of Jimmy Rose starting Ray Winstone.
I told him I was happy too. I initially wanted to use a bitch I trained and sold
last year to a family that live close to me. Unfortunately she had recently had
an operation and we were not sure if her wound would have healed, so I
contacted a few clients and friends who own nice looking dogs that I know.
I didn't know until a week or so before they wanted me to handle the dogs. In
fact the first I heard of it was when the assistant asked me for my waist and
neck sizes. Why? I asked. For your uniform as a prison dog handler he replied!
Gulp!! Ok I’ll do it.
Anyway it was a long day with lots of waiting around but was aware of that as
I've done a few bits of TV before in my former career as a guide dog
instructor. Including a live interview on GMTV in London.
Hopefully a good bit of PR for my business and will continue to open a new
avenue for work and income.

From 20 th October 2014 new powers are available in England & Wales for
Councils and the Police to tackle nuisance from dogs. It’s not a crack-down on dog owners but it is a crack-down on irresponsible dog owners.
The ‘headline’ power that is being featured in the media is
for Community Protection Notices. The grounds are that there must be conduct:-
• which is having a detrimental effect on the quality of life for those in the locality, and
• which is persistent or continuing, and
• which is unreasonable
The first step is for an enforcer to serve a written warning and if that doesn’t stop the nuisance then a CPN can be served specifying measures,
which may include inter alia leashing, muzzling or training. If there is a breach the maximum Fixed Penalty Notice is £100 and if prosecuted the
maximum fine is £2,500 for an individual.
Also, there will be a phasing out of any existing Dog Control Orders as they will be replaced by Public Spaces Protection Orders if there are
activities taking place in a public place which are having (or are likely to have) a detrimental effect on quality of life. Councils will no longer have
to advertise the proposal in a local newspaper although it must still be published (details have not been set out on what this entails).
Neither a parish nor a community council has the power to make a PSPO.
If a PSPO is made it must be published on the Council’s website and
notices erected that the Council considers sufficient. If there is a breach the maximum Fixed Penalty Notice is £100 and if prosecuted the
maximum fine is £1,000.
We have a DVD Guide (including notes) which is available to order now for only £39.99 (including P&P in the UK). Presented by Trevor Cooper in
his usual lively and informative style, the c. one hour long DVD takes you through the main provisions in an easy to follow format.
