DESCRIPTION

16th October 2014 at 1885 Britomart. Join the meet-up group and attend the next Glug here: meetup.com/GlugAuckland/ Big thanks to 90seconds.tv/ for creating this clip of the night. Inspirational talks from Mike Van De Elzen Celebrity Chef, Nathan James Cooper TBWA Digital Director and Casey Eden .co.nz Entrepreneur. Glug is all about filling up the creative well. Our showcase event is held in London but there are now 8 other events around the world including Auckland. Based around a series of talks and informal networking dubbed “Notworking”, Glug has become one of the most exciting, credible and well-attended creative events around the globe. “Glug showcases inspirational creative people and practices from art and architecture, fashion, food, digital and design. It’s about taking some time to immerse yourself in something creative and different over a beer or two.“ says creative director and Glug host Dave Nash Leo Burnett said, “Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, is still the secret of great creative people”. “Great danger lies in simply marinating your brain in advertising conversations day after day – it will only weaken your own creative spark. “ adds Nash. So there it is, get yourself along! New Gluggers are always welcome to come along and see what it’s all about.

The big things that worked

Great internet ideas are hard to protect. Build a “moat” as quick as you can!

The big things that worked

Hire fast, fire faster.

&

Good people will earn back the extra $10k they are looking for.

&

Don’t fit round pegs into square holes.

The big things that worked

Blow people out of the water with exceptional customer service.

The big things that worked

Be as transparent as possible with your staff.

The things we learned

Don’t always listen to the ‘sample size of 1’ when developing.

The things we learned

Your customers represent your brand.

The things we learned

You need to have thick skin.

● Share a photo of a missing dog

● Borrow a ladder for an hour

● Discuss local council plans

● Recommend a trusty mechanic

● Sell an unused sofa

● Set up a beach clean up

The options for using Neighbourly are unlimited ….

● Not in competition with Facebook.

know something.

● Deliberately designed to create a

trusted neighbourhood.

● Customisable neighbourhoods &

notifications

● Native iPhone & Android apps.

Future plans

● Community funding is difficult and slow process to be involved in.

● 90% of your money is spent within 30km of your home.

● We believe that strong local businesses equal a strong local community.

● Must add value to our members lives.

Big Stuff

If you are going to fail … fail as fast as you can.

&

Get as much feedback as possible from your networks… it will save you money

in the long run.

Big Stuff

Don't reinvent the wheel.

&

Focus on the 90/10 - Things that will move the needle.

Big Stuff

Do stuff, shit happens - The worse thing you can do is delay a tough decision.

Big Stuff

Owning 5% of something massive is better than 100% of something average.

Big Stuff

Clocking up hours for the sake of it is dumb.

Lasting thought

Everyone you meet in life is fighting a battle you know nothing about, so be kind.

… but make sure you have thick skin if you are entering the startup game

Thank you
