The Natural Carbon Cycle

• 550 gigatons (Gt) of Carbon Dioxide is naturally found atmosphere and maintained by the natural Carbon Cycle.

• Since the Industrial Revolution humans have released massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere causing the carefully balanced cycle to of balance.

• On average 9 Gt of Carbon Dioxide is added to the atmosphere by human activity every year.

Global Warming in Aviation

• The Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) has set legally binding targets for the aerospace industry to halve its CO2 emissions by 2020 based on levels in 2000.

• These targets are essential in the attempt to slow down global warming and to reduce CO2 emissions to achieve this.

Global Warming in Aviation• To meet these targets Rolls-Royce, the 2nd largest

manufacturer of aircraft engines in the world, has embarked on a 5 year, £95m, Environmentally Friendly Engine research programme looking at maximising fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.

• Reducing CO2 is not just about engines. The target can be met by changing flight descents into airports. By maintaining a constant three degree angle during descent aircraft can reduce emissions and save fuel at the same time. This approach has already been adopted at Los Angeles airport and partially at some London airports. Hopefully this method will soon be adopted at every airport.
