PROS AND CONS OF WORKING IN A GLOBAL VIRTUAL TEAM

SUBMITTED BY PRISM

What is a Global Virtual Team?

A Virtual Team – also known as a Geographically Dispersed Team (GDT) – is a group of individuals who work across time, space, and organizational boundaries with links strengthened by webs of communication technology.

CONS OF GLOBAL VIRTUAL TEAMS Communication can be limited – One needs to know how to use technology to your advantage which takes a lot of sophistication.

Managing time can be difficult – In a large team it his hard to find a suitable time for all to be present virtually

Team bonding opportunities are limited – Distributed teams don’t have the luxury of being able to hang out as traditional office teams do and hence they are less compatible.

Conflicts, Lack of Trust & Collaboration - The cultural differences between the members of virtual teams gives rise to number of conflicts.  These challenges are also precipitated by the absence of non-verbal cues so intrinsic to face-to-face interactions.

It creates happier employees - Employees are commuting 90-120 minutes every day one-way just to get to work.

Reduced Time to Market - Since the members span the time zones, there could be different team working on the same project 24*7.
